Jess McFadyen set to debut in white-ball series against Bangladesh

Lea Tahuhu, Georgia Plimmer named in T20I squad only; Hannah Rowe, Molly Penfold picked just for ODIs

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Nov-2022New Zealand are set to hand a debut to Wellington wicketkeeper-batter Jess McFadyen in the upcoming home series against Bangladesh, after she was named in the 15-member squad for the three T20Is and ODIs. McFadyen’s selection in place of fellow wicketkeeper Izzy Gaze, who is India with the Under-19 team, was the only change to the squad that had recently toured the West Indies.Coach Ben Sawyer said playing Bangladesh would be a great opportunity for McFadyen, especially with the T20 World Cup to be held next year.”Debuting for your country is always a special moment, so we’re delighted to be welcoming Jess into the side for what will be an exciting series,” Sawyer said. “Jess brings great energy – when we worked together at the Commonwealth Games, I was really impressed with what she brought to the team environment – and she has good experience with the bat, especially in that middle order.”McFadyen, 31, had been picked in the New Zealand squads earlier for last year’s tour of England and the Commonwealth Games this year but didn’t get to play.”We used the recent series in the West Indies to try different combinations with bat and ball and we also want to do that with the wicketkeepers; we want to see what Jess can bring to the team,” Sawyer said. “We’re also in a fortunate position that we have a New Zealand Development team touring India, which Izzy (Gaze) is involved in, so we’re able to give both players experience in different conditions and against different opposition.”McFadyen herself was eyeing a spot for the T20 World Cup, looking to “put her name forward” for the big tournament after missing out on a debut in the Commonwealth Games in England.”Ben was there as well… to be in that environment, see how he wanted to run things and to spend time with the established players – they are world class,” McFadyen said. “I am lucky to be playing for [Wellington] Blaze, and have a dozen of them around me for training. [I am] super lucky to have those experiences.”Both the T20I and ODI sides will be led by Sophie Devine, with pace bowler Lea Tahuhu and batter Georgia Plimmer named in the T20I squad only, while seamers Hannah Rowe and Molly Penfold picked just for the ODIs.It will be New Zealand’s last official series before the T20 World Cup next year in South Africa.”Over the last couple of months we’ve put together a blueprint of how we want to play, particularly in the T20 format, with an eye on the World Cup next year,” Sawyer said. “This tour will be a great opportunity to continue working and refining those plans and making any necessary adjustments. The series against Bangladesh begins with the first T20I on December 2 in Christchurch, with Dunedin and Queenstown to host the other T20Is. The ODIs begin on December 11 in Wellington, before Napier and Hamilton stage the last two matches of the tour. The series will be the first time Bangladesh play a bilateral series in New Zealand but will be their second visit this year, following the World Cup in March.Squad: Sophie Devine (capt), Suzie Bates, Eden Carson, Lauren Down, Maddy Green, Brooke Halliday, Hayley Jensen, Fran Jonas, Amelia Kerr, Jess Kerr, Jess McFadyen, Molly Penfold (ODIs only), Hannah Rowe (ODIs only), Georgia Plimmer (T20Is only), Lea Tahuhu (T20Is only)

Wrong'uns the right answer for UAE hat-trick man Karthik Meiyappan

Legspinner explains his thought process after picking up the first hat-trick of the 2022 T20 World Cup

Alex Malcolm18-Oct-2022It’s not often that you find a player beaming after his side has been thumped by 79 runs in a T20 World Cup game, but nothing could wipe the smile off Karthik Meiyappan’s face following his hat-trick against Sri Lanka.Karthik, the 22-year-old UAE legspinner who was born in Chennai and has trained with both Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings in the past, put his name up in lights in Geelong with three magical deliveries in three balls to join Brett Lee, Curtis Campher, Wanindu Hasaranga and Kagiso Rabada as just the fifth man to take a hat-trick at a T20 World Cup.”It still hasn’t sunk in, the fact that I’ve got a hat-trick in a T20 World Cup, and to become the fifth bowler to do so,” Karthik said after the match. “It is really a proud moment and feels amazing. But, like I said, it would have been much greater and much better for me if we had won the game tonight.”He was genuine in his disappointment with the result. But Karthik, who moved to the UAE in 2007 when his father began working there, could not have done any more to help his team. He bowled a superb spell of four overs for just 19 runs, including 12 dots. His hat-trick came in his third over, the 15th of the innings, to stall Sri Lanka’s momentum after they had cruised to 117 for 2 with more than five overs to go on a difficult batting surface.

“That is something I don’t know about. But I hope they do”Karthik Meiyappan on the possibility of a call-up from Chennai Super Kings

Even more impressive than the three deliveries he bowled to dismiss Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Charith Asalanka and Dasun Shanaka was the clarity of his plans in the moment, and his execution. He was happy to talk everyone through the plans, too.”First up against Rajapaksa, the leg side was the long boundary for him,” Karthik said. “I thought he would take me down the deck as I think he was 5 or something that and… I tried to push it away bowling a wrong’un and he tried to go over covers but he sliced it.”When Asalanka walked in, that was a no-brainer for me: I was going to bowl a wrong’un straight up and Vriitya [Aravind, the wicketkeeper] took an amazing catch.”And then Dasun walked in, again I was just going through my motions being the hat-trick, but all I wanted to do was bowl on the stumps and whatever happens after that it is out of my hands. But, again, I just bowled a wrong’un and I think he picked it as a leggie.”He was asked after the match if he thought he might get a call from Chennai Super Kings again, this time for a bit more than bowling in the nets.”That is something I don’t know about,” Karthik said with a smile. “But I hope they do.”

Broad's Magnificent Seven

Seven times in his Test career, Stuart Broad has claimed five wickets or more in a single spell of bowling. ESPNcricinfo looks back on each of those moments

Andrew Miller16-Jan-2016 • Updated on 22-Jul-2023Following the announcement of Stuart Broad’s retirement from Test cricket, we look back at his seven trademark bursts with the ball – from The Oval to the Wanderers, each famous spell yielding a five-wicket haul.12-1-37-5 v Australia, The Oval 2009Broad is hoisted afloat as he prises open Australia’s batting at The Oval•Getty ImagesThose who had witnessed Broad’s baptism as a Test cricketer on two arduous tours of Sri Lanka and New Zealand in 2007-08 always knew there was much more to his game than mere pretty-boy looks and a notable cricketing father. But, at the age of 23, and after a middling return of 58 wickets in 21 Tests, this was the Test in which the boy became a man. With England needing nothing less than victory in the fifth Test to reclaim the Ashes, Broad built on the nugget of confidence he alone had taken from a disastrous innings defeat in the preceding Test at Headingley, and wrestled Australia to the canvas. Shane Watson fell to the sixth ball of his spell – lbw inevitably, but full and straight was the message. Ricky Ponting chopped on, Mike Hussey was nailed by an inducker. An ominous 73 for 0 was 133 for 8 by the time he took his sweater, and a tendency to rise to the occasion had been noted.5.1-2-5-5 v India, Trent Bridge 2011Catch me if you can: Broad completes his first Test hat-trick•Getty ImagesIt is easy, in hindsight, to disparage India’s 4-0 whitewash in 2011. By the time of the final Test at The Oval, MS Dhoni’s men had mentally checked out of the tour, while England had surged to No.1 in the Test rankings. But for one and a half matches, the contest was raw and compelling – England had prevailed in a tussle for the ages at Lord’s but, after being bundled aside for 221, were staring at a massive deficit in the second Test, with India 267 for 4 when Broad found his range on his home ground at Trent Bridge. His stampede through the lower-middle order included the first hat-trick of his Test career, as Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh and Praveen Kumar all fell foul of his wicket-to-wicket line. Harbhajan’s lbw, it was wryly noted, could have been reprieved for a thick inside-edge, but for India’s refusal to endorse the use of DRS.6.1-1-33-5 v South Africa, Headingley 2012Broad removed JP Duminy first ball at Headingley, a match over-shadowed by off-field issues in the England camp•AFP”It’s not easy being me in this dressing room,” was Kevin Pietersen’s plaintive cry after his savagely brilliant 149 had turned South Africa’s outstanding attack into net bowlers to light up a dank, drizzly contest that matched the prevailing English mood. It can’t have been easy being anyone in that toxic, divided dressing room, but Broad found the best remedy was to get out on the pitch and do what he does best. After 10 fruitless overs at the top of the innings, he returned at 205 for 3 on the final afternoon with the contest dribbling to a draw. Six overs and five wickets later, Graeme Smith had been so stung by Broad’s onslaught, which included AB de Villiers and JP Duminy in the space of his first five balls, that he declared nine-down, leaving England 253 in 39 overs to square the series. Cue a furious KP, punted up to the top of the order in a bid to unleash his own turmoil onto his opponents. But his three fours in Morkel’s first over weren’t enough to propel an unlikely result.11-0-44-7 v New Zealand, Lord’s 2013The scoreboard spells out James Anderson and Stuart Broad’s dominance•Getty ImagesA low-scoring Lord’s dogfight was settled, in no uncertain terms, by Broad’s mongrel spirit on a dizzy fourth afternoon. After consecutive team innings of 232, 207 and 213, the last of which – England’s second – was marked by an early Joe Root masterpiece (71 from 120 balls) New Zealand were tasked with 239 for victory and all the time in the world to get there. They needed only 22.3 overs for a result. Bowling unchanged throughout a completed Lord’s innings for the first time since 1936, Broad and James Anderson shared the spoils unevenly, with Broad’s then-career-best 7 for 44 sending the visitors spiralling to 68 all out. Broad scalped the top four, including Peter Fulton with his third ball, and the rest was a formality.9.3-1-22-6 v Australia, Chester-le-Street 2013 Ashes retained: Broad’s spell castled Australia in Durham•Getty ImagesNow you see it, now you don’t. Right up until the moment it was swiped from under their noses, Australia believed that a share of the 2013 Ashes series was their destiny. The urn itself was gone – lost to the rain at Old Trafford following a Lord’s humiliation that had left them 2-0 down and needing three wins on the spin to stay afloat. But the moral victories kept stacking up against an England team in which something just didn’t feel right, and which would be exposed soon enough Down Under. At 147 for 1 on the fourth afternoon, with David Warner’s belligerence making short work of their 299 target, the fruits of Darren Lehmann’s more permissive dressing-room regime were blooming for the Aussies. But Tim Bresnan chiselled the vital opening as Warner was caught behind for 71, and Broad followed up with the sledgehammer. His stunning leg-cutter to bowl Michael Clarke was the prelude to an Ashes victory waltz, as Australia lost nine wickets in the session to surrender the series with a confounding whimper.9.3-5-15-8 v Australia, Trent Bridge 2015Ashes regained: 8 for 15•Getty ImagesAnother Ashes decider, and Broad’s most decisive spell of them all. This was Australia’s ultimate humiliation – a beating as raw and ridiculed as the 5-0 larruping that it avenged from 18 months earlier. The Ashes innings that could even fit in a Tweet. It began at the beginning – in the first over of the contest, as Chris Rogers and Steven Smith poked seaming monsters to the slips – and escalated quickly, as a thousand Ron Burgundy memes would soon attest. Before Australia could draw breath, they were 10 for 3, then 15 for 4, then 21 for 5, as Ben Stokes at fifth slip (count them…) produced the moment of the series, a staggering one-handed pluck, reaching backwards as he did so, that left Broad so incredulous that all he could do was cover his mouth as his eyes popped out of their sockets. Australia limped to 60 all out in the space of 18.3 overs. The Ashes surrendered before lunch on the opening day.10-6-14-5 v South Africa, Johannesburg 2015-16Broad ripped the heart out of South Africa’s second innings at Johannesburg•Getty ImagesFor a man who has often been likened to Draco Malfoy from the Harry Potter films, Broad certainly knows how to put a bit of Avada Kedavra into his spells. This epic, his first of the kind overseas but just the latest of his series-stealing performances, not only derailed a keenly fought contest in which any fourth-innings total of note was destined to prove a tough chase, it brought a crushing and decisive end to South Africa’s proud stint as the world No.1 Test side. For once it took Broad an over or two to find his proper range, but as soon as Dean Elgar fenced a seaming lifter to the keeper, the rest came meekly. From first wicket to fifth, he needed 31 balls at the cost of a solitary single – and that only arose thanks to a shelled catch in the slips. Along the way, he rampaged past Bob Willis’s tally of 325 Test wickets to take his place at third on England’s all-time list. Seven-and-a-half years later, he would bow out with close to twice that number of victims.

Liverpool want Ecuadorian centre-back prodigy from same academy as Caicedo

Liverpool are considering a January move for an Ecuadorian prodigy who came through the same academy as former target Moises Caicedo, according to reports.

Liverpool transfer news

With the January transfer window on the horizon, Liverpool are being linked with a number of potential reinforcements, including Juventus prospect Kenan Yildiz and FC Porto right-back Martim Fernandes. According to TEAMTalk, the Reds are also interested in signing Bologna centre-back Sam Beukema.

They report that manager Arne Slot is a long-term admirer of the defender, and views him as a potential purchase for the summer, with Bologna not keen on letting him leave in January.

Though a number of Europe’s other top clubs are also interested, the Reds could have the edge in negotiations, as Beukema, who Bologna value at £20 million, has already admitted he could one day see himself moving to Anfield.

“I was a fan of West Ham. I once visited Upton Park with my father and I was really impressed, because the atmosphere was similar to that of Feyenoord or Go Ahead Eagles,” he said. “But there are so many fantastic teams in England, so if another great club like Liverpool came along I would be happy to go there one day.”

Reds want Ordonez

Another centre-back who is understood to be interesting Liverpool is Club Brugge’s Joel Ordonez. According to Belgian media outlet Het Laatste Nieuws (HLN), both Liverpool and Chelsea have been keeping tabs on the Ecuadorian, with January touted as a potential window for a move.

Ordonez joined Brugge in 2022 after coming through the academy of Independiente del Valle – the same club from where Chelsea midfielder and former Liverpool target Caicedo also emerged. Since the move, the 20-year-old has established himself as a key player for Nicky Hayen’s team, making 52 appearances and helping them the Belgian Pro League title last term.

Like Beukema, Ordonez has also expressed his desire to one day play in the Premier League.

“The Premier League, I would like that,” he recently told HLN. He added, however, that he remains focused on his current club, and suggested that he won’t be leaving the Jan Breydel Stadium anytime soon: “I’m focused on Club [Brugge], with whom I want to win another title.”

Meanwhile, Brugge head coach Hayen said of the interest in the youngster: “That is ultimately what you want as a player. What makes me happy is that Joel always does his job despite the interest. When that transfer will happen, you have no control over that. It could be in the winter season, but it could also be after this season, which we would prefer.”

Man Utd now make fresh move to sign "explosive" new left-back for Amorim

Manchester United are now reportedly making a move to sign a new left-back for Ruben Amorim as the new Old Trafford head coach plots his path to success in Manchester.

Amorim's first games show problems and promise

A draw in his opening Premier League clash with Ipswich Town was followed up by a hard-fought 3-2 win over Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League, with both games showing how Amorim could improve the players at his disposal and how much work still needed to be done ahead of a tough fixture list.

The Red Devils scored early in both games before throwing leads away, and in the case of their clash with Bodo, fell behind in shock fashion. However, they resuced all three points against the Norwegian side to move up to nine points from their opening five games in the Europa League, with a strong chance of securing an automatic last-16 slot should their unbeaten campaign continue.

There were positives to take from the game, too; Rasmus Hojlund rediscovered his goalscoring touch with a quickfire brace, with his relentless pressing also contributing to the opening goal that Alejandro Garnacho scored.

Elsewhere, Tyrell Malacia returned to action for the first time in 18 months, and though he was understandably rusty, United fans will have been pleased to have seen him back in action. Equally, Luke Shaw managed another half-hour from the bench as he rebuilds his fitness, while Noussair Mazraoui looked more assured in his new role in central defence.

But new signings and departures are inevitable at Old Trafford, and now the club have been tipped to be advancing in a move to sign a rising star.

ByHenry Jackson Nov 30, 2024 Manchester United "advance" for teenage defender

According to reports in Argentina, as relayed by Sport Witness, Manchester United and Liverpool have made “advances” to Lanus in a bid to sign promising full-back Julio Soler.

It is claimed that “both of the Premier League sides have made moves for the 19-year-old”, while Argentinian giants River Plate are also thought to be interested in the youngster.

The defender has just 18 months left on his contract with Lanus, but it is added that the club have “high demands” to part ways with him any time soon. For Manchester United, a left-back is a crucial addition.

Though both Shaw and Malacia are both fit now, history suggests that it will not be long before either player is sidelined for a significant period again, with Shaw managing just 12 Premier League games in Erik ten Hag’s final full season in charge.

Soler, who has been called up to the Argentina senior setup (but is yet to be capped), has been described as an “explosive” full-back who is “technically secure” and “one of the best LB prospects in South America” by football analyst Ben Mattinson on X.

Could he be the long-term solution to Manchester United’s left-back issues?

After Fire won the toss and chose to field, Spirit opener Rossington produced the early pyrotechnics with a flurry of boundaries off Dwaine Pretorius and David Payne. His partner Daniel Bell-Drummond was undone by a beauty from Jake Ball, but Rossington’s brutal striking brought the hosts to 41 for one at the end of the powerplay.Sodhi, Fire’s replacement for Adam Zampa, applied the brakes, only giving away two runs in his first five and pressure told when Rossington slog-swept the New Zealand legspinner straight down Ben Duckett’s throat in the deep. Eoin Morgan went without scoring but McDermott picked up where Rossington had left off, smashing his second six over long-on.McDermott too though fell to Sodhi’s wizardry at which point he had 2 for 6 in 14 deliveries.
