Celtic star was “set to” leave, now he could be the new Tierney under Nancy

Celtic manager Wilfried Nancy has his work cut out for him at Parkhead after a frustrating first match in charge of the club against Hearts in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.

A 2-1 defeat to the league leaders proved that the Frenchman has plenty of issues to solve and plenty still to learn about the squad of players that he has at his disposal.

The former Columbus Crew head coach has a big group of players to work with in Glasgow, and there are a number of stars who he should give an opportunity to in the coming weeks.

The rarely-seen Celtic stars Nancy should unleash

Kelechi Iheanacho, for example, was an unused substitute against Hearts after returning from injury, and he should be given a chance to lead the line after Daizen Maeda missed two ‘big chances’, per Sofascore, on Sunday.

The Nigerian centre-forward has scored three goals in eight appearances in all competitions for the Scottish giants this season, per Sofascore, and could emerge as Nancy’s first-choice number nine.

Another rarely-seen star who could benefit from the change in shape to a 3-4-2-1 could be Dane Murray, who has started two league games this season, as he is a naturally right-sided centre-back who can provide balance when playing out from the back.

Auston Trusty played in that role on Sunday, as a left-footed player, and was slow to bring the ball forward and progress the play, as he was on his weaker side, which could open the door for Murray to come in and take that spot.

Colby Donovan was also snubbed in Nancy’s first game, playing zero minutes, but he could emerge as the manager’s own Kieran Tierney in the right wing-back position, having been set to leave in the summer window.

Wilfried Nancy is brewing the next Tierney

The 19-year-old academy graduate was “set to join Dundee on loan for the season”, per journalist Josh McCafferty, in the summer transfer window, before an injury to Alistair Johnston meant that he was needed as a first-team option at Parkhead.

    First Impressions

What did pundits and fans alike think about their new star signing when they arrived? Football FanCast’s ‘First Impressions’ series has everything you need.

Donovan has gone on to play 716 minutes across 12 appearances for the first-team, per Sofascore, since the decision was made to keep him at the club, instead of sending him out on loan, and he has shown real promise.

The Scotland U21 international is looking to follow in Kieran Tierney’s footsteps in Glasgow, as the left-back came through the academy to provide a big threat down the left flank as an attacking full-back.

In his first spell with the club, as shown in the graphic above, the Scotland international provided an eye-catching 37 assists in 170 matches for the club, and Donovan has the potential to provide a similar threat in this new system.

Hyun-jun Yang started at right wing-back against Hearts. However, Nancy could move him over to the left and unleash the academy graduate on the right to provide crosses on that side.

Donovan, as shown in the statistics above, has stood out as one of the most impressive creative right-backs in the Premiership this season under Brendan Rodgers and Martin O’Neill, whilst playing as a right-back.

Playing as a wing-back under Nancy would give him even more opportunities to push forward and show off his creativity in the final third, which could improve his output as a creator and make him a Tierney-esque threat on the right-hand side.

Whilst Johnston is still to return from his injury eventually, unleashing Donovan in this new role could provide him with a chance to nail down a regular starting spot in the team to become the next academy graduate to become a star at Parkhead, like Tierney.

His emergence in the first-team this season, after being set to go out on loan in the summer, is perhaps a lesson that Celtic can learn from, as they could give more opportunities to their academy players to see if they have what it takes to play for the senior side before letting them move on, permanently or on loan.

Worse than Yang: Nancy must bin 3/10 Celtic dud who once had "the X factor"

This Celtic star who had “the X Factor” should be ruthlessly dropped from the starting line-up on Thursday.

    Five historic clashes involving Afghanistan

A look back at matches involving Afghanistan that wrote themselves in the history books

Shashank Kishore26-Sep-2018ESPNcricinfo LtdZimbabwe v Afghanistan, World Cup Qualifiers, Harare, 2018Afghanistan had lost their opening game to Scotland, and defeat to Zimbabwe looked all but inevitable when Mujeeb Ur Rahman was the ninth man out with Afghanistan still needing 20. But the Zadrans – Dawlat and Shapoor – weren’t giving up yet. In a tense half hour where every ball was an event, the pair slowly ate into the target, batting out 49 deliveries to add 17. It was now down to three runs off four deliveries. A mini-conference on the field kept Afghanistan on tenterhooks. Then Brian Vitori slanted one full, drew the edge from Shapoor and Brendon Taylor held on to give Zimbabwe a two-run victory. A packed Harare Sports Club went into delirium. Shapoor, a picture of dejection and angst, had to be literally forced off the field in disappointment. Afghanistan’s campaign had been jolted.West Indies v Afghanistan, 1st ODI, St Lucia, 2017Rashid Khan had 212 to defend on a sluggish surface. The four previous occasions that he had picked four or more wickets resulted in wins. West Indies were steady at 68 for 2, when Rashid struck off his first two deliveries in the 23rd over to crack the game open. Then he struck off consecutive deliveries in his second over, the 25th, to be on a hat-trick twice during his opening spell that read 4 for 1 at one point. Even the lone run conceded came courtesy a dubious wide call. Rashid scythed through the lower order too, finishing with 7 for 18, the fourth-best haul in ODI history as West Indies were shot out for 149. The 63-run victory for Afghanistan was their first in this format over a Full Member other than Zimbabwe or Bangladesh.Afghanistan v Scotland, 2015 World Cup, DunedinAfghanistan looked down and out when they slumped to 97 for 7. The slide was sparked by Richie Berrington’s accurate seam-ups that triggered an epic 5 for 12 collapse after Javed Ahmadi’s brisk half-century. Samiullah Shenwari, however, had other ideas. He was consuming too many balls, he was struggling to rotate strike, but buckled down and gave himself time. His calmness and a partnership of 35 for the eighth wicket with Dawlat brought them back. But Dawlat slogged across the line to be caught at mid-off.Shenwari made his disgust obvious much before the catch had been taken. Then there were calculated blows, frantic running, pure unbreakable belief and some breathtaking six-hitting with Afghanistan needing 38 off 24. Shenwari hit three sixes in four balls and was caught trying to hit a fourth. It eventually boiled down to five off the final over, and four off four balls. Shapoor had dead-batted expertly, but he had to look for the boundary now. Iain Wardlaw went for a yorker, missed and slipped a low full toss down leg. Shapoor picked it behind square and raced off in celebration the moment it crossed the infield. This was a victory for Associate cricket. This was for Afghanistan. A first World Cup win had been achieved.2:05

What do Afghanistan need to do to reach the next level?

Bangladesh v Afghanistan, Asia Cup 2014, FatullahRashid was still two years away from international cricket, Mujeeb three. Afghanistan were playing only their fourth match against a major team, and in Fatullah, they not only defeated Bangladesh, the Test-playing hosts, but nearly sneaked out a bonus point too. The foundation was laid by a stunning 164-run partnership between Asghar Afghan and Shenwari to lift them from 90 for 5 in the 27th over. After being hauled to 254, they bowled and fielded like Tigers – a name their opponents are fondly referred to by the fans. Shapoor generated enough pace in his first over to rattle the openers. He capped it off with a wicket off the fifth ball. Hamid Hasan, the headband, tattoo and heart-on-his-sleeve bowler, bristled in from the other end and struck vital blows. Bangladesh’s chances of revival rested on their captain, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Mominul Haque but once Afghanistan found their way past, there was a sense of despondency in the Bangladesh camp.Afghanistan v Ireland, 4th ODI, Greater Noida, 2017Afghanistan were tottering at 142 for 8, before Shafiqullah and Dawlat hauled them to 220. Ireland, trailing 1-2 in the five-match series, had every reason to be happy. Mohammad Nabi spun out the top order with his guile to leave Ireland hanging by a thread. Their problems were compounded when Kevin O’Brien had to retire hurt because of a hamstring injury. Then he returned with Ireland needing 91 with four wickets in hand and counter-attacked at the first sign of Afghanistan’s spinners switching off. In a 10-minute passage, O’Brien went berserk, the ferocity of his onslaught offsetting the top-order collapse. Gary Wilson held his own and the series had been tied.Three other historic Afghanistan winsJersey v Afghanistan, final, World Cricket League Division Five, 2008: Chasing 81, Afghanistan won by two wickets.Afghanistan v USA, World Twenty20 Qualifier, Dubai, 2010: Afghanistan defended 135, to win by 29 runs.Afghanistan v Ireland, final, World Twenty20 Qualifier, Dubai, 2010: Afghanistan won by eight wickets to qualify for the World T20 in West Indies..

Sky Sports share update on Celtic talks to sign £10m attacking "jewel"

A key update has emerged regarding Celtic signing an attacking “jewel” in the current transfer window, with Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph sharing the news.

    Celtic transfer news

The Hoops were reportedly in talks to complete the signing of Sevilla striker Kelechi Iheanacho on Saturday, with the Nigerian keen on a move away from the La Liga side. Brendan Rodgers worked alongside him during their time at Leicester City, and he could help fill the attacking void left by Kyogo Furuhashi.

Celtic are also believed to be eyeing up a last-gasp move for Slovan Bratislava forward David Strelec, with attacking reinforcements seemingly the order of the day at Parkhead. He has scored 10 goals in 11 league starts this season, as well as netting twice in the Champions League.

Manchester United left-back Tyrell Malacia has been mentioned as a transfer target for the Hoops, too, with Alex Valle moving back to Barcelona earlier this week.

Whether the Red Devils would be willing to sell remains to be seen, especially given Luke Shaw’s injury woes, but it would be a real signing of intent by Celtic, ahead of their Champions League playoff clash with Bayern Munich later this month. Now, another transfer claim has dropped regarding a fellow target.

Update on Celtic's move for attacking "jewel"

Writing on X on Saturday, Joseph reported that Celtic’s talks with Brondby over the signing of Mathias Kvistgaarden have “broken down”, with a move for the £10m-rated attacker seemingly off:

This is a disappointing update for Hoops supporters, considering what a strong addition Kvistgaarden could be, not only in terms of the present, but also the long-term future.

The 22-year-old has found the net 10 times in only 12 starts in the Danish Super Liga this season, while football talent scout Jacek Kulig has described him as a “jewel” of a footballer.

Hopefully, there is still the potential for Celtic to sign Kvistgaarden in the summer, even if he doesn’t move to Parkhead during the current window, but the fact that Joseph points out that other targets are now being looked at suggests that may not happen.

Celtic now in talks to sign former PL star who hit best form under Rodgers

    He desperately needs a move…

    1 ByTom Cunningham Feb 2, 2025

It’s now a case of frantically signing an alternative before Monday’s deadline, but the Hoops must make sure they don’t panic buy, bringing in the wrong player in the process.

£75k-a-week Man Utd player now on verge of exit outside UK transfer window

Manchester United are still hoping to complete one final deal in the coming hours as they look to finalise their squad for the second part of the Premier League campaign, it has been reported.

    Manchester United's January signings

Ruben Amorim’s first transfer window as Manchester United manager ended with just two new faces added to his squad despite the Red Devils languishing in 13th place in the Premier League and with a less than good record since the former Sporting manager arrived, which was compounded by their most recent defeat to Crystal Palace.

The major addition was Patrick Dorgu, with the wing-back arriving from Lecce in a deal believed to be worth around 35m euros (£29m) with add-ons included.

“I am incredibly proud to be able to call myself a Manchester United player – this is a very special day for my whole family,” said Dorgu upon being unveiled at Old Trafford.

No need to fret just yet if your team didn’t get who they wanted in the transfer window…

    ByRoss Kilvington Feb 3, 2025

“I cannot wait to work with Ruben Amorim. His vision for this team and the future of the club is incredibly exciting. There is a clear plan set out for my development, and I feel that Manchester United is the perfect place to fulfil my potential and complete my huge ambitions.”

Though still just 20-years-old, Dorgu is expected to be an instant starter at the Theatre of Dreams and will add some much needed firepower and dynamism on the left hand-side for Amorim, while he is also versatile enough to play elsewhere should he be required. A long-term option at fullback, his arrival means that United are now pursuing a late exit.

United aiming to finalise exit for stricken star

That is according to The Athletic, who report that the Red Devils are still aiming to complete a late loan move for Tyrell Malacia. Despite the English transfer window closing at 11pm on Monday, the Dutch transfer window remains open for another 24 hours and it is there that INEOS are looking to finalise a deal.

Malacia, who has seen much of his time since arriving at Old Trafford marred by injuries, has caught the eye of PSV Eindhoven after a move to Italy or Portugal broke down “over the club’s desired loan fee and the level of a future option to buy”.

Indeed, he has “travelled to the Netherlands to undergo a medical” in a move that will see at least some part of his £75,000 a week wages taken off the books for the remainder of the campaign, adding to the significant savings that both Marcus Rashford and Antony’s loan moves this month have provided.

Malacia won plenty of praise during his early tenure at Old Trafford, including from former Red Devil great Rio Ferdinand, who hailed him for his performance against Mohamed Salah back in 2022.

“He reminds me of Patrice Evra in many ways,” said Ferdinand “He’s athletic, he looks like a pound-for-pound strong kid”.

However, the 25-year-old has failed to kick on from that early promise thanks to injury, and his career now appears to lie away from Old Trafford both in the short term and likely the long term too.

Anderson reclaims No. 1 spot in Test bowling rankings; Hasaranga at top in T20Is

The England veteran is the oldest man to top the charts since Clarrie Grimmett in 1936

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Feb-2023James Anderson has overhauled Australia’s captain Pat Cummins to become the No.1 Test bowler in the ICC rankings, off the back of his role in England’s 267-run win against New Zealand in Mount Maunganui last week.At the age of 40 years and 207 days, Anderson is also the oldest player to top the rankings since Clarrie Grimmett, the Australian legspinner, in 1936, having played an integral part in the recent success of England’s Test team, which has now won ten of its past 11 matches. It is the sixth time that Anderson has gone to the top of the rankings in a career that began against Zimbabwe at Lord’s in May 2003, and has now spanned 178 Test appearances and 682 wickets, placing him third on the all-time list behind the spin duo of Muthiah Muralidaran (800) and Shane Warne (708).Full rankings tables

In May 2016, Anderson went past his long-time team-mate Stuart Broad, as well as India’s R Ashwin, to top the rankings for the first time, and most recently he held the top spot for five months in 2018 before being displaced by South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada. It has the potential to be a short return to the top, however. With a total of 866 ranking points, Anderson is just two points ahead of Ashwin in second place, who also delivered a strong showing in India’s most recent Test win over Australia in Delhi last week. Cummins is now third on 858, but could himself regain top billing with two Tests to come against India in the next fortnight, despite flying home this week to address a health issue in the family.Wanindu Hasaranga overtook Rashid Khan to become the No. 1 T20I bowler•ICC via GettyNevertheless, the achievement is further proof of Anderson’s remarkable longevity. In the course of his seven wickets at Mount Maunganui, he brought his overall Test average down below 26 for the first time since his maiden series in 2003, but the sense that he is improving with age is backed up by his form in the last five years of his career.Since turning 35 in July 2017, Anderson has now taken 202 wickets in 56 subsequent games, at an average of 20.56. At Mount Maunganui, he and Broad also overhauled the Test record for most wickets taken as a bowling partnership, which previously stood at 1001 between Australia’s Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne.”They’re the GOATs, aren’t they? I can’t see that record being broken for a very long time,” Ben Stokes, England’s captain, said after the first Test win. “Warne and McGrath were an unbelievable combination, but I think the way in which Test cricket is going now with everything else to players, I can’t see that record being broken any time soon. I can’t ever see it being broken.”Related

Veurink has been part of the England coaching staff since Wiegman took over the team back in 2021, playing a key role in the Lionesses' triumph at the 2022 European Championships and their run to the 2023 Women's World Cup final. However, after the reigning European champions conclude their title defence in Switzerland this summer, Veurink will depart to take over the Netherlands national team.

    AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) knows Veurink well, as he was also Wiegman's assistant when she was in charge of the Netherlands between 2017 and 2021. The two had a lot of success there as well, winning the 2017 Euros and reaching the 2019 Women's World Cup final. Prior to that, Veurink was head coach of Twente's women's team, winning seven trophies in four years despite only being 25 years old when he started in the role.

    WHAT VEURINK SAID

Veurink, who has signed a contract until the end of the Euros in 2029, said: "This is not only a great challenge and a wonderful new adventure, it also feels like a logical next step in my career. I never made a secret of the fact that one day I wanted to be the manager of the Dutch national team. With over eight years of experience at the very highest level as Sarina Wiegman's right-hand man, first with the Netherlands and now in England, I am ready to stand on my own two feet. The fact that this opportunity has just arisen in the Netherlands makes it extra special. I will now first do everything possible to finish the coming months in England in style."

Nigel de Jong, the technical director of the KNVB, added: "Arjan has a rich history in women's football and has witnessed up close the developments that international women's football has gone through over the past 15 years. He knows what is demanded in the absolute top, but also knows how important it is to keep the connection with the grassroots. We are therefore delighted that he wants to take up the challenge. I am looking forward to working together and to further build on the success of the Dutch national team. Finally, we would also like to thank the English Football Association (FA) for their cooperation."

    DID YOU KNOW?

Veurink will actually be an opponent of the Netherlands before he departs his role with England, as the two nations are set to face off in the group stages of this summer's Euros. Both are among the favourites to emerge victorious from the tournament, as the winners of the two previous editions.

'I don't know how this happened' – Rahul left stunned after improbable defeat

“We had the game in our pockets and we let it slip,” Rahul says after LSG failed to get 31 runs from 36 balls with nine wickets in hand

    ESPNcricinfo staff22-Apr-20233:41

Did Super Giants err with their batting order?

A visibly stunned KL Rahul could “not put a finger on” how and why and when Lucknow Super Giants lost what was, for the longest time, their game for the taking against Gujarat Titans.”I don’t know how this happened and it has happened so fast, but yeah, that’s cricket, it keeps reminding us that the game is never won till the last ball,” Rahul said after Mohit Sharma bowled a final over that cost just four runs – and accounted for four wickets – to give Titans a seven-run win. “I still can’t put a finger on it and say where we went wrong, but it is what it is, we’ve lost two points. We had the game in our pockets and we let it slip.”I just have to accept and take it as it is. It is a game and these things keep happening but this is going to sting us for a while. We will try and come back strong.”Related

Rahul was past his half-century, while Krunal Pandya seemed comfortable and two points seemed a formality.Until it wasn’t. Noor Ahmad struck twice, before Mohit and Mohammed Shami kept their composure and Titans snatched a win out of nowhere.Earlier, Rahul got Super Giants off to a flyer in the chase. He scored his first 46 runs off 30 balls, but it took him 31 balls to score his next 22. Super Giants failed to score a single boundary in the last 45 balls of the chase.Rahul admitted that he should have “taken his chances” earlier.”[I] obviously wasn’t trying to bat really deep, but still trying to play my shots, still trying to take on the bowlers I fancy,” Rahul said. “They bowled quite well in the two-or-three-over period between Noor and Jayant [Yadav]. And probably we should have taken a couple of more chances. We had a few wickets in hand but, look, it wasn’t an easy wicket for the batters to come in and get going straight away. Set batter – you obviously want them to play and finish the game for you.2:11

Manjrekar: Mohit thriving on unexpected opportunity

“That was my mindset, but I should have taken a few more chances or just had to get a few off the middle of the bat.”In the end, they did bowl decently, but I think we missed out on some boundary opportunities. That’s the only thing that really went wrong in the 40 overs that we played. In the last three to four overs, the pressure really got to us. They bowled some good balls, they bowled some good overs, but still we should have gotten it done.”Hardik Pandya, the Titans captain, was as baffled as his counterpart after winning a game his team looked out of.”The amount of cricket Mo [Mohit] has played, I don’t think I needed to interfere. The amount of execution and clarity and calmness he showed, it made my life very easy,” Hardik said. “I threw the ball and I said ‘back yourself’. At the same time, the over [Mohammed] Shami bowled, it showed his experience.2:38

Is Rahul to blame for Super Giants’ loss?

“Mohit and Shami were tremendous. The credit is actually to them, the kind of pullback that they did, and special mention to Jayant [Yadav] as well.”Rahul was effusive in praise of his bowlers, and despite the loss, he wanted his team to take the positives and bounce back strong.”We were quite brilliant [with the ball]; 135 is probably par or just ten under par and we bowled really well,” he said. “We know these conditions and we utilised them really well. The bowlers were very clear with their plans and the execution was spot on.”We are still doing a lot of things right. We are still eight points out of seven games that we have played. We are still good as a team. There is nothing to question about our attitude and how we are playing our cricket. It is really a good team but these things happen. Sometimes you are on the wrong side.”

“Brighton are a very good team, with very good players, a good coach and good ideas,” said Lopetegui on Brighton.

“They have carried on with similar ideas over a number of years, despite the fact they have had a few different coaches. So, we have to be ready tomorrow to have a good answer to the demands in the match. Every game in the Premier League is hard, and we don’t prepare for any to be tougher than others, and in the same way we see each fixture as an opportunity.

“I’m always looking to overcome an opponent, and in this case we know they are a very good opponent. But, we have to put the focus on ourselves, and be ready to play a good match tomorrow.

“They have a good record [at London Stadium], but I don’t believe a lot in the statistics. Each match is different, and tomorrow is another opportunity and another challenge. We have to think about tomorrow, rather than looking back at the past.”

Lopetegui has demoted West Ham summer signing Guido Rodriguez in the build up to this clash, but one player who’s emerging as much more of a key man in his starting eleven is fellow new arrival Carlos Soler.

West Ham hold initial talks to sign Carlos Soler permanently

The Spaniard joined West Ham on a season-long loan deal from PSG, including an option to buy for around £17 million.

Soler has started their five league matches and is beginning to find his feet, impressing in that period, and an English source has told Le Parisien that West Ham are “delighted” by the 27-year-old’s rise to the occasion.

The French news outlet also reports that West Ham have started “first discussions” over signing Soler on a permanent basis, and they’ve planned meetings to advance the topic of his long-term future in east London.

PSG would also be happy to accept a figure in and around the initial £14 million (plus £3m in add-ons) for Soler to join West Ham indefinitely, so it appears Luis Enrique’s side are open to altering the buy-option clause so Steidten can strike an outright deal for the “complete midfielder”.
