Rangers now agree deal with club to bring "truly great" £3m ace to Ibrox

Glasgow Rangers have agreed a deal to bring a “truly great” player to Ibrox, according to a big update from Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph.

Russell Martin unhappy after Rangers draw

The Gers kicked off their Scottish Premiership season in disappointing fashion on Saturday, only managing to draw 1-1 away to Motherwell after conceding a late equaliser.

It’s fair to say that Rangers manager Russell Martin wasn’t holding back after the game, telling certain players to “drop their ego” and making it clear that improvements are needed.

“Some of them have to drop their ego, I’ll look at us tactically and accept my responsibility in it. But today, it’s not really tactical, it’s a mentality problem, and we got more than what we deserved actually.

Rangers managerRussellMartinapplauds fans after the match

“We need work out who really wants to be all in and who doesn’t. But Europe is not an excuse. This club demands to play in Europe. We’ve qualified for that, so we’re going to be playing in Europe a lot and we’re going to have games after the European games a lot, and we have to manage them way better than today.”

There is still time for Rangers to make new signings, which Martin may want if he is unhappy with some of his current squad, and it now looks as though one piece of business is edging closer to being completed.

Rangers agree deal to sign "truly great" player

According to Joseph on X, Rangers have now agreed a deal in principle to sign Oliver Antman from Go Ahead Eagles this summer, worth £3m.

This is great news for the Gers, with the draw at Motherwell showing that added quality is required this summer, not least in wide attacking areas. Antman has the potential to be an excellent signing for the Scottish giants, with Ibrahim Afellay showering him with praise in the past.

“That Antman is really… I think the treasurer is rubbing his hands. He’s just going to make a great transfer at the end of the season. That boy is so smart. He is also technically skilled and has depth in his game. A truly great player. If I were AZ, I would take him blindly.”

Still only 23 years of age, there is so much time for Antman to improve as a player, and his ability to thrive on either flank will appeal greatly to Martin.

A tally of 16 assists in just 36 appearances for Go Ahead Eagles speaks volumes about his creativity, while seven goals in 22 caps for Finland is also an impressive return.

Antoine Semenyo set for reunion at Liverpool? Reds sporting director could sign winger for second time as Bournemouth set £75m valuation

Antoine Semenyo could be set for a reunion with Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes, with the ex-Bournemouth chief considering signing the Ghanaian for the second time. Semenyo has displayed terrific form at the start of the 2025-26 season as he has scored six league goals and is just behind Manchester City goal machine Erling Haaland in the Golden Boot race.

  • Dream start to new season for Ghana winger

Bournemouth are currently fourth in the Premier League table, despite losing three of their four first-team defenders – Dean Huijsen to Real Madrid, Iliya Zabarnyi to Paris Saint-Germain and Milos Kerkez to Liverpool – in the summer, and the key reason behind the Cherries' early success this term is Semenyo's sensational form. The Ghanaian has already scored six league goals and is attracting interest from several top clubs.

Semenyo wanted by top English teams

According to , Semenyo held talks with Tottenham and Manchester United before ultimately deciding to pen a new contract with the Cherries over the summer. However, both clubs continue to remain interested in the attacker. Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes, who signed Semenyo at Bournemouth back in 2023, is known to still be an admirer of the forward.

  • Bournemouth set Semenyo price tag

The report adds that Bournemouth rate their star player very highly and would ideally charge north of £75m ($101m) should clubs come in with offers over the next couple of transfer windows.

Wearing the burden lightly

Carrying a weak and inexperienced team and struggling to deal with the pressure of expectations aren’t easy, but Bangladesh’s captain manages to do so and remain upbeat

Abu Choudhury16-Jul-2011I meet Shakib Al Hasan on a warm July day in London, at an event organised by former Bangladesh Under-19 coach Shahidul Alam for the charity Capital Kids Cricket. The venue is Stepney Green School where the majority of students are of Bangladeshi heritage. The playground is awash with excited faces as Shakib makes his entrance.Bangladesh’s captain is returning to Dhaka next week, and while his stint at Worcestershire has been short, he tells me he has enjoyed his time on the county scene. “Last year I played mainly four-day and Pro40 cricket for Worcester. This year I am playing mainly Twenty20 cricket. But because I’ve been here before I’ve been able to adapt quickly to the conditions.”Have the six months of non-stop cricket (straight from the World Cup to the IPL, then England) been fatiguing? “There are positives and negatives,” Shakib says. “On the downside, if you’re not playing well there’s no time to work on your game. But on the upside if you are performing well you can keep your form going”.He has mixed feelings about his performances for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. “I enjoyed my time in the IPL. Bangladesh and India have a similar culture, language and conditions so it was almost like playing at home. I think I bowled well. I didn’t get many chances with the bat, but when I did bat I thought I had one good game and one not-so-good game.”When I ask about his team-mates at Worcester and Kolkata, he responds with a smile and says that there is a great dressing-room atmosphere in both camps, though if he had to choose he would count Manoj Tiwary at Kolkata and Moeen Ali at Worcester among his best friends. In an age of increasing player power, I am surprised to learn that Shakib was not consulted on the appointment of the new coach. All the same, he is impressed with Stuart Law’s credentials. “He has played county cricket in England and domestic cricket in Australia, so he understands what players need to do to perform. His experience with Sri Lanka too will be invaluable.”Shakib’s admiration for Law’s predecessor however, remains undimmed. “I think Jamie Siddons was a good batting coach and the boys really warmed to him. He was also a very hard worker.”Bangladesh’s next assignment is a tricky tour of Zimbabwe, which includes one Test match. “In terms of results, obviously we want to win all the games,” Shakib says, “although we know it won’t be easy playing in their conditions. Also, we haven’t played a Test match in over a year, so that’s a concern. But then Zimbabwe have not played a Test in almost six years.”He is confident the Bangladesh squad are training hard in Mirpur under the guidance of Sarwar Imran, who has the reins until Law formally joins Bangladesh in Zimbabwe. “Sarwar Imran has coached the national team before, and has been the A team and Academy coach, so he has plenty of experience. The boys are in good hands”.Among the new players named in the preliminary squad training in Mirpur to face Zimbabwe are the likes of batsman Shuvagato Hom and spinner Elias Sunny, whom Shakib knows from domestic cricket. “They’ve performed consistently for the last two or three seasons. They are good lads and if they get an opportunity they will want to make an impression,” he says.He is generally happy with the squad that has been selected although he laments the loss of fast bowler Shahadat Hossain. “Shahadat was doing well in Test matches, but unfortunately he got injured. Without him I’m not sure who our third seamer will be. There are a few guys around – if they get the chance they will do well. Nazmul [Hossain], for instance, has been with the national team for the last four or five years. He’s an experienced guy and could step in.”Shakib also thinks Robiul Islam could present a good option, despite a nervy debut against England last year “What I like about Robiul is that he can swing the ball. Hopefully he’ll learn from the experience [against England] and do well in the future.”

“We don’t have a large player pipeline in Bangladesh, so we have to stick to those who can contribute to the team. I think that’s the right way to do it”

When it comes to extending the talent pool under the new coach, Shakib advocates a pragmatic approach.”We don’t have a large [player] pipeline in Bangladesh, so we have to stick to those who can contribute to the team. I think that’s the right way to do it. We’re a very young side, so we’re bound to make mistakes. The main thing is to work hard and to improve.”At first-class level, cricketers in Bangladesh need to play more cricket and on good wickets, he says. “That will greatly improve the standard of our cricket.””All the guys who have played for the last two to three years have played well. They’ve contributed, and the main thing is, they’re always working on their game.” Shakib, perhaps predictably, names Tamim Iqbal as the cricketer who has improved the most, but he reserves high praise for Imrul Kayes and Shafiul Islam. On his personal ambitions, Shakib is circumspect. “I don’t like to set big goals for myself. I like to set small goals, series by series. There are some areas I can always improve.”World Cup apart, Shakib thinks Bangladesh have generally improved over the last two or three years. “We have been very competitive, especially at home,” he says. That view will no doubt be put to the test when West Indies arrive to tour Bangladesh later this year.Looking further afield, at issues in cricket in general, Shakib says he supports the Decision Referral System, which he thinks will improve the overall standard of umpiring and benefit weaker teams, who often bear the brunt of bad decisions. “It makes it much fairer. Umpires are less likely to make mistakes [with it],” he says.Shakib believes the ICC’s move to ensure there is no political interference in cricket governance is a positive step; an interesting position, given that to date the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board has always been a government appointee. After a quick net session with some schoolchildren, it is time for Shakib to leave. As he says his goodbyes, I am struck by how young he still is – an indicator of how quickly he has risen, from a virtually unknown U-19 player to one of the world’s best allrounders.Cricket is the only major sport Bangladesh plays at the highest level, and the expectations on Shakib and his team are immense. Those burdens, he thinks, had their part to play in Bangladesh’s World Cup collapses against South Africa and West Indies. “We didn’t handle the pressure well; that was the only problem. The expectations were too high and the media, especially, contributed to this.”Still, he goes about his business with a calm assurance; the responsibility sits well upon his shoulders. The looks on the faces of the students of Stepney Green reflect it.Capital Kids Cricket is a charity that teaches and promotes cricket in inner London state schools

Mumbai Indians have signed allrounder Corbin Bosch as a replacement for fellow South African Lizaad Williams, who has been ruled out of IPL 2025 with injury.Bosch, a bowling allrounder, is yet to make his IPL debut, but has been part of Rajasthan Royals in the past as a reserve player. He took 11 wickets in seven innings at an economy rate of 8.68 in MICT’s run to their maiden SA20 title. Bosch will reunite with his SA20 team-mate Ryan Rickelton at Mumbai Indians. He will slot in as the third seam-bowling allrounder at MI behind captain Hardik Pandya and Raj Bawa.He was a diamond pick by Peshawar Zalmi for PSL 2025 at the draft that was held in January, but will now have to forgo that deal to participate in the IPL. Yorkshire says 'no repercussions' for any witnesses in investigation of Azeem Rafiq's racism claims

Yorkshire have said there “must be no repercussions” for any witnesses giving evidence in the investigation of “institutional racism” at the club made by former captain, Azeem Rafiq.Responding to Rafiq’s call for witness anonymity on Thursday, the club released a statement on Friday stating that they “completely agree with Azeem”.And while the statement stops short of promising anonymity, it does accept the need for “impartially”.”We completely agree with Azeem that there must be no repercussions for any witnesses who give evidence to the investigation,” the statement sent to ESPNcricinfo reads. “We must address these allegations impartially and with urgency so we can understand how the club and cricket as a whole move forward.”The club has also announced the addition of two people to the investigation panel. Rehana Azib, a barrister and employment law specialist, and Helen Hyde, the former Personnel Director at Waitrose, will join a group chaired by Dr. Samir Pathak, who is a surgeon and was previously an England Universities wicketkeeper.Hanif Malik will no longer appear as part of that panel. As reported by ESPNcricinfo previously, Malik had been the subject of complaints from Rafiq, who claimed he had previously outlined his concerns to him but that no action had been taken. While no firm deadline has been given for the panel to report its conclusions, the expectation is they will do so before the end of the year.”The investigation is now underway and will address directly the specific complaints made by Azeem Rafiq,” the club said in a statement. “In addition, and at the request of the Board, the investigation will also conduct a review of the club’s internal policies and culture with regards to discriminatory conduct.”The Board of Yorkshire County Cricket Club has committed to sharing the findings of the investigation and the recommendations of the panel. The investigation has now begun and the Board have been clear that these matters are to be investigated thoroughly and with urgency. It is expected that the investigation will be completed within three months.”

'The fans would love him' – Dele Alli urged to make shock transfer after being banished by Como

Dele's time at Serie A side Como looks to be up after he was banished from the first-team squad by manager Fabregas. Talk of retirement at the age of just 29 has also been played down, with the midfielder now looking for a new club ahead of the start of the 2025-26 season.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Dele is said to be considering a return to England to play in the Premier League or the English Football League after making just one appearance for Como. Yet a shock move to Scotland has also been speculated on, with Russell Martin's Rangers tipped to be an ideal destination for Dele to try and get his career back on track.

  • WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

The possibility of Dele moving to Rangers was discussed by pundits on talkSPORT's 'Transfer Tinder' section.

Jeff Stelling said: "Depends what the contract is like. If it was sort of appearance-related, something like that, yeah, nothing to lose. But unfortunately, and I feel for him, his track record in recent times is diabolical. So you're not going to fork out good money with no guarantee that you're going to get games from Dele at all. But if it's a contract that stipulates pay-as-you-play, then that's a completely different matter, we all remember just what a fantastic player he was. It's very hard to see at 29 that there is going to be a revival, no matter how much we might want him to succeed. Let's hope that that's the case – if it's on the basis of pay-as-you-play, it's a no-risk, no-lose situation for Rangers."

Former Newcastle manager Alan Pardew added: "His fall from grace has been unusual – a player of that quality, playing for England, Champions League final etc., and now can't seem to get a contract at Como. I hope he does [revive his career], he's a player that you don't want to lose. Let's hope that there's life for him at Rangers. If you look at the history of players that have fallen from grace, it's very rare that they come back and resurface."

And host Shebahn Aherne responded: "It's sad because his situation is so personal, what he's going through. But you'd think a club like Rangers, the fans would love him, and maybe that could revive the talent that's there."

    WHAT NEXT FOR DELE?

Fans will have to wait and see if Dele can secure a move ahead of the new season. The 29-year-old is training separately at Como but it remains to be seen if offers will arrive for the midfielder after a struggle for game time since joining the Serie A side.

PCB came under pressure over England tour after positive Covid-19 tests, says CEO

But, he says, the Pakistan board decided to go ahead with the series to do its part for the resumption of cricket

PTI26-Jul-2020The PCB came under intense pressure in deciding whether to send its team to England or not after 10 players tested positive for Covid-19, but eventually went ahead with the tour to help with the resumption of the game amid the pandemic, CEO Wasim Khan has said.Shadab Khan, Haris Rauf, Haider Ali, Fakhar Zaman, Mohammad Rizwan, Wahab Riaz, Imran Khan, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Hasnain and Kashif Bhatti were among those who tested positive in the first round of testing ahead of the tour. Some of these players subsequently cleared a second or later test and joined the rest of the squad in England.Pakistan play a three-match Test series against England starting on August 5, followed by three T20Is.”The Board was under pressure when so many players’ tests came positive. Thus sending the cricket team to England during the coronavirus pandemic was quite a tough decision,” Wasim Khan was quoted as saying by Pakistani channel Geo News. “We kept to our plan to go ahead with the tour because we had in the first place decided to send the team to play our important part in the restoration of world cricket, and to keep it on track it is imperative to continue with matches.”Khan also said that “cricket and Covid-19 will have to co-exist”.He said the PCB also took into account that West Indies proceeded with their tour of England despite the uncertainties. “Whenever we are asked regarding our decision to proceed with the tour to England, the same question should also be posed to the West Indies cricket team, which has also continued with scheduled matches,” he said. “West Indies decided to go to England when the situation was quite worse over there [due to the pandemic].”
