Pochettino could now drop 3/10 Chelsea star alongside Fernandez

It was another bad day at the office for Chelsea on Sunday, and that's putting it lightly.

After shipping four goals away to Liverpool during the week, Mauricio Pochettino's side had the perfect opportunity to get back on track with a Premier League home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

However, despite taking a 1-0 lead within 20 minutes, the Blues managed to lose the game 4-2 and left the pitch to a cacophony of entirely warranted boos from their own supporters.

To a man, the team were poor, but there were two who managed to reach an even lower level, and if the Argentine wants to keep his job for a little while longer, he'd be wise to drop them for the FA Cup replay against Aston Villa this evening.

Enzo Fernández's game vs Wolves in numbers

The Pensioners' £107m World Cup winner had a game to forget at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, and while he might not have been directly responsible for any of Wolves' goals, he was utterly ineffective.

So poor was his performance that the Standard's Nizaar Kinsella gave him a 4/10 on the day and argued he 'was poor defensively when Wolves were in transition'.

Enzo-Fernández-wolves

It's hard to disagree with Kinsella's assessment when the former Benfica man lost possession 12 times in the 101 minutes he spent on the pitch, which works out to losing the ball once every 8.4 minutes, which isn't good enough.

During the game, he was dribbled past once, committed two fouls, took one shot which was off target, mustered a paltry combined expected goal and assist figure of just 0.29 and was inaccurate with all three of his crosses.

In all, the Argentinian was incredibly underwhelming, and if he doesn't start dramatically improving before the end of the season, he'll quickly pick up the label of a big-money flop, which is a hard label to escape from in English football.

That said, there was a player who was even worse than Fernandez on Sunday, someone who has a genuine shout for being the worst player on the pitch, and by quite some way.

Malo Gusto's game vs Wolves in numbers

Chelsea's worst player on the day, and quite considerably so, was French right-back Malo Gusto.

The former Lyon man was a walking disaster on the day, failing to provide any substantive attacking threat whatsoever and living up to Get French Football News' description of him as a "liability" at the back.

In his 81 minutes on the pitch, he managed a combined expected goal and assists figure of just 0.19, lost possession 12 times, won just two of his 12 ground duels, committed three fouls, was dribbled past three times and gave away the penalty that allowed Matheus Cunha to complete his hat-trick.

With statistics like that, it's not hard to see why Kinsella gave the 20-year-old a 3/10 for his efforts, arguing that 'the defender kept putting Chelsea in danger with his passing.'

Keaton Jennings relishes top-order competition after Test recall for Sri Lanka tour

Batsman happy “mixing electrolyte drinks” if it means he can help England win series

Keaton Jennings has insisted that he has plenty to offer England after his recall to their squad for the Test tour to Sri Lanka, regardless of whether he can break into the side.Jennings, picked as the back-up top-order batsman in the absence of the injured Rory Burns, won his place on the tour primarily due to his record on the subcontinent: he averages 44.44 in five Tests in Asia, and his two hundreds for England have come in Mumbai and Galle. And while he hopes that his ability against the turning ball can put pressure on incumbent opening pair Zak Crawley and Dom Sibley, Jennings said that he hopes he can use his own experiences in the spotlight to help them through difficult times if necessary.ALSO READ: The Keaton Jennings recall: has the era of batting specialisation arrived?”We’ve got a few guys competing for top-order places but that’s healthy” Jennings told PA. “It’s almost like the old opening batter’s union – only you know the pressure they are feeling and what they are going through.”They [Sibley and Crawley] are two very good blokes and two guys who are working very hard at their game. Whether I get the chance or not, I’m here to help England win the series. If I play, that’s awesome, if I end up mixing electrolyte drinks then I’ll do that.”You cannot underestimate the level of support everyone offers each other in that dressing room. It becomes a family-type unit. You feel your mate’s hurt when he nicks off early doors – it’s hard to see because you have been in that situation and you can double it when you’re playing for England.”Jennings’ struggles at the top of the order in seam-friendly conditions saw him come in for heavy criticism during his second spell in the Test team, with the nadir coming in England’s series at home to India in 2018 when he averaged 18.11 across nine innings.”I’ve had an absolute battering at times,” Jennings said. “The sport section can be hard reading. But there are going to be times when you see things you don’t want to see or hear things in the street… that’s the life I’ve chosen.”I’ve got to make sure I’m big and strong enough to know where my values are. I don’t want to run away from my failures or my shortcomings. I have no issue being open and honest if it lets me put my head on the pillow at night.”If a youngster reads this, sees that someone who plays for England struggles with this stuff, it might help them learn to cope. Maybe that youngster can go on and become the best player in the country.”Even before arriving in Sri Lanka on Tuesday, Jennings has had a busy winter. He travelled to Mumbai for England’s spin camp at the end of 2019 before returning for a Lancashire commercial event in January, and last month captained England Lions to their first-ever victory against an Australia A side at the MCG.”Any Australia side is up for it and always wants to compete, so to captain and to win there definitely makes me very happy,” he said.”It’s something I’ll look back on with a beer in front of my fireplace and be very proud of. There’s potential for some of the guys to go back there in a little while and recall those experiences. You live between Ashes series, that’s the way English cricket works.”

Lendl Simmons, Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo help West Indies level series with thumping win

Pollard and Bravo picked up three wickets each before Simmons made short work of the chase with a six-laden 91 not out

The Report by Hemant Brar20-Jan-2020

Lendl Simmons slams one down the ground•BCCI

Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo picked up three wickets each before Lendl Simmons’ scintillating knock made short work of their 139 chase as West Indies romped home by nine wickets against Ireland to finish the three-match series 1-1.After being asked to bat, Paul Stirling and Kevin O’Brien gave Ireland another breezy start and took them to 50 in just 3.2 overs but just like in the second T20I, Pollard pegged them back with his variations. Bravo, too, joined in as Ireland were all out for 138 in 19.1 overs.Simmons attacked right from the start, hitting ten sixes and five fours in his unbeaten 40-ball 91 and powered West Indies home with nine overs to spare.O’Brien gives Ireland flying startAfter being dismissed off a full-toss in the second T20I, O’Brien ensured he didn’t disappoint this time around and gave Ireland a flying start. In the second over, O’Brien hit Romario Shepherd for a four and six on back-to-back deliveries before Stirling finished it off with another six. Sheldon Cottrell found some movement in the opening over but soon it all went awry for him as O’Brien smashed the first five balls of his next over for fours. Ireland had stormed to 48 for no loss after three overs.Pollard, Bravo strike backAfter registering his career-best figures in the last game, Pollard once again did the rescue act for his team. He struck with his fourth delivery after bringing himself on in the fourth over. While trying to launch one over long-on, O’Brien miscued and Shimron Hetmyer made no mistake. With the drizzle getting heavier, the umpires asked the players to walk off. When play resumed after 45 minutes, Bravo trapped Stirling lbw from around the wicket. The opener asked for a review in the false hope that the ball might have pitched outside the leg stump but it had pitched in line. The wicket made Bravo West Indies’ highest-wicket taker in T20Is as he surpassed Samuel Badree’s tally of 54.Andrew Balbirnie and Gareth Delany kept the scoring rate up for a while, helping Ireland to 73 for 2 at the end of seven overs. But wickets soon fell in clusters. Pollard dismissed Delany and Harry Tector in the eighth over, and in the 11th, Gary Wilson fell to Shepherd followed by Balbirnie’s run-out. While Ireland crossed 100 in the 12th over, they had lost six wickets by then. Two more wickets fell in the 14th over, including another run-out, before Bravo wrapped up the innings by picking up the last two.Simmons’ onslaught powers West Indies homeA target of 139 was well below-par and the way Simmons and Evin Lewis started, they made it look like even paltry. Simmons carted Barry McCarthy for a six and two fours in the second over of the chase. However, he offered an opportunity when he mistimed Mark Adair in the fifth over but Balbirnie dropped the chance at mid-off. Simmons was on 23 off 17 at that time and then there was no looking back. He struck at least one six in every over for the rest of the chase, and after being dropped, he struck nine sixes and two fours in the 23 deliveries he faced. He was also helped by some undisciplined bowling as the Ireland bowlers struggled to find the right length.Such was Simmons’ onslaught that it made Lewis’ 25-ball 46 look pedestrian. Lewis fell to Simi Singh when West Indies were one hit away from victory, and fittingly, Simmons did that with yet another six.

Time feminino

'Why the hell are we paying him $6 million a year?' – Alexi Lalas says he would dismiss manager Mauricio Pochettino, pessimistic about USMNT's chances at World Cup

In the wake of a 2-0 loss to South Korea, Lalas said there is too much at stake with a home World Cup to risk poor results

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Former USMNT star Alexi Lalas says that if he were in Matt Crocker's position as U.S. Soccer sporting director, he would dismiss manager Mauricio Pochettino, given the lack of tangible progress in the first year under the Argentine's leadership.

The FOX Sports analyst said there's too much at stake with a home World Cup to risk an underwhelming performance.

"Yeah, I would," Lalas said on his "State of the Union" podcast when asked if he would fire the manager. "I've spent time with Mauricio Pochettino. I think he's a quality coach… What I'm basing it on is Mauricio Pochettino himself. What he's said and done… He's come to the realization that, with his experience – and he's talked about it – that this isn't a soccer-first country.

"OK, we all understand that. But you know what they would do in a soccer-first country? They wouldn't abide by this. It would be on to the next one."

Though admitting that it's unlikely that U.S. Soccer would make such a rash move at this point, Lalas suggested that alarm bells should be ringing at the federation after another disappointing performance. The USMNT lost to South Korea, 2-0, in New Jersey on Saturday night.

"Again, this is a home World Cup. It's unique in that aspect, and therefore, the stakes are much higher," Lalas said. "Whether you're Matt Crocker or anyone else at the United States Soccer Federation, this is going to happen under your watch. If you let it happen, and it doesn't go well, and it's a failure, then everyone should be out."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ex-USMNT player Stu Holden said that, if results at next year’s World Cup are ultimately what matter, then pundits are overreacting to Pochettino’s poor results as he experiments with lineups.

"All that matters is how this team ultimately does in the World Cup next year," Holden said. "There's no pressure right now. The pressure comes next year. He could lose every game until the World Cup, and if he goes to the World Cup and goes to quarterfinals or semifinals, then this would be viewed as a success."

Given the level of investment in Pochettino, Lalas said the team's performances should have improved. Pochettino has won nine of 17 matches in charge of the USMNT.

“How would you quantify bombing out of a World Cup, or doing poorly at a home World Cup? What’s that worth to America?” Lalas asked. “Why the hell are we paying him $6 million if he can’t do anything with these players? The whole point of bringing him in is that he could do more with these players – and he’s done less.”

  • WHAT LALAS SAID

Lalas said that he remains pessimistic that the U.S. will show progress by next summer.

"If you ask me today if I'm confident that this team is going to do great things next summer, given what has happened? Hell no!" he said. "And Mauricio Pochettino would have to say the exact same things. This is what we do. We judge through the games. We are reactive, we are emotional about it, we are passionate about it. There are a lot of people who are like 'Oh my goodness, we're in deep you know what come next summer.'

"If we don't make a change, then that's what's going to come into fruition. I don't want that on my watch. I don't want that to happen to my country. I don't want that to happen to my sport."

Tottenham now preparing £40m+ offer to sign "superb" new Forlan

In search of a consistent goalscorer, Tottenham Hotspur are now reportedly preparing a £40m+ offer to sign Georges Mikautadze from Villarreal in 2026.

The great weakness in Thomas Frank’s side this season has been their goalscoring struggles. With Dominic Solanke yet to return to full fitness, the likes of Richarlison and Randal Kolo Muani have struggled to truly take hold of the starting role – handing the Lilywhites a frustrating problem.

Kolo Muani has particularly struggled since arriving from Paris Saint-Germain and is still searching for his first Tottenham goal. With the North London derby against Arsenal up next, however, the forward has been passed fit and has the perfect opportunity to find the back of the net for the first time in the Premier League.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the Arsenal game, Frank revealed early team news which included an update on Kolo Muani’s unexpected return to action after suffering a jaw injury before the break.

If the PSG loanee continues his run without a goal, then many around North London will be asking big questions. Tottenham chiefs are already reportedly searching for a striker and the Frenchman’s struggles could accelerate their plan to welcome La Liga star Mikautadze in 2026.

Tottenham readying Mikautadze offer

According to reports in Spain, Tottenham are now preparing a €50m (£44m) offer to sign Mikautadze from Villarreal in 2026. A player who’s been compared to the great Diego Forlan by Spanish media, the 25-year-old has shown glimpses of his best form so far this season – scoring five goals in 14 games – and has entered Spurs’ radar as a result.

After becoming a transfer flop at Ajax, the Georgian striker reinvented himself at FC Metz, before starring at Lyon to earn a summer switch to Villarreal. Now, he could be about to make the biggest move of his career courtesy of Tottenham.

Dubbed “superb” by scout Jacek Kulig, Mikautadze has only kicked on since then to attract the interest of the Premier League. As Tottenham’s forwards continue to struggle, the 25-year-old should be seen as a serious option to consider next year.

Gabba Test – India fear multiple quarantines will impact home series against England

Travelling to Brisbane might mean serving mandatory two-week quarantine upon return to India

Nagraj Gollapudi09-Jan-2021The confirmed case of the UK strain of Covid-19 in Brisbane could add to India’s fears of playing the fourth Test at the Gabba. Apart from the obvious medical concern generated by the new strain, BCCI officials also worry that it could impact travel plans and upset the schedule for the home series against England. That is one of the key issues outlined by the team management and the BCCI in their communication with Cricket Australia this week, ESPNcricinfo understands.Though there is currently no special restriction on travel from Australia into India, the BCCI fears that the rules might change quickly to keep pace with the health implications, and impact the team. At present, all travellers from the UK to New Delhi – even those testing negative on arrival – have to serve a mandatory week-long institutional quarantine period and a further week of quarantine at home (though there is scope for exemption for those with connecting flights). If a rule like this is applied to the team, it would affect the cricket schedule. India are scheduled to fly out of Australia the day after the end of the Test series on January 19 and the England series is scheduled to start on February 5.Over the past few weeks, the Indian team management has expressed its reluctance to travel to Brisbane more than once, mainly because of the hard quarantine protocol put in place by the Queensland government to deal with the Covid-19 situation. And now, with Brisbane under a three-day lockdown because of the reported case, the BCCI and the Indian team management are concerned.Related

  • Group of fans removed from the SCG stands after Siraj alerts umpires to alleged abuse

  • India to not travel to Brisbane if there's hard quarantine: BCCI to CA

  • Plans continue for Gabba Test despite Brisbane's weekend lockdown

The other reason for the Indians’ concern, as reported earlier, is the possibility that they would be placed under severe restrictions during the Test in Brisbane, with the Queensland government’s rule forcing them to only leave the team hotel for training and the match itself.Earlier this week, the BCCI told Cricket Australia that it would not agree to players’ movement being limited to the team hotels. Cricket Australia, which has booked hotels exclusively for the teams in both Sydney, where the third Test is currently on, and Brisbane, has in reply pointed out that the teams were free to mill around within the hotel in designated areas. It is understood that Cricket Australia has also told BCCI that it was tough for it to find a replacement venue for the final Test considering most Test grounds across Australia have been hosting the Big Bash League matches. Another significant challenge of finding an alternate venue is that exemptions would be required to travel to a state other than Queensland, which the CA feels is impossible given the constraints. The Indian team has suggested staying on in Sydney. However, it is understood that no request to prepare a second pitch at the SCG – the only viable venue should the Test need to be moved out of Brisbane – has been made yet.
