Sanjay Manjrekar looks at how Virat Kohli’s leadership boosted the confidence of India’s attack on the fifth day and the big gains for the home side after the 3-0 series win against South Africa
ESPNcricinfo staff07-Dec-2015India’s spinners will finally get the credit they deserve With South Africa intent on playing an extremely defensive game in the hope of a draw, India’s spinners had to prise out the wickets on a track that was gradually easing out. Sanjay Manjrekar credited R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja for their relentless pressure.1:40
Manjrekar: Spinners will finally get the credit they deserve
Kohli’s enthusiasm as captain impressive As India broke through South Africa’s defence to seal a 3-0 series, Manjrekar credited the side’s fifth-day success to Virat Kohli’s tactics as well, particularly his support for the side’s bowlers and his use of Umesh Yadav in the attack. Another facet of Kohli’s captaincy in the series that impressed Manjrekar was his enthusiasm to push his team to give their best.2:47
Manjrekar: As captain, Kohli backs every player
More self-belief for Umesh under Kohli’s captaincy In the past, Umesh has struggled with accuracy and confidence but his performance in the second innings against South Africa was his best by far, according to Manjrekar. He was accurate and focused and seemed to gain inspiration from Kohli’s inputs.1:28

Rahane’s growth; Ashwin and Jadeja’s form gains for IndiaAmong the biggest gains for India in the 3-0 series win were R Ashwin’s performances as the lead spinner and Ravindra Jadeja’s return to form and accuracy. Manjrekar also lauded Ajinkya Rahane’s performances in the series and Kohli’s ability to push his players to perform better than their potential.2:00

South Africa batsmen showed unique ability in defenceThey may have lost the Test series but Manjrekar said that South Africa’s batsmen, particularly Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis, showed a unique quality in the final match in Delhi – the ability to play extreme defensive cricket for long spells.1:26

da aposte e ganhe: Celtic are now in negotiations over the signing of a “special” player in the January transfer window, according to an update from renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano.
Latest Celtic news
da 888casino: The Hoops are still stinging after their 3-0 defeat away to Rangers on Thursday, in what was surely their most disappointing Scottish Premiership outing of the season to date. Brendan Rodgers’ side were never at the races at Ibrox, allowing their rivals to get within 11 points of them in the title race.
There is no need for an overreaction, however, with Celtic still in an extremely dominant position, and new signings during the January window will only strengthen their chances of yet more title success, as well as shining in the Champions League.
Brendan Rodgers
One report has claimed that the Hoops could sign two players in the same position out wide, in order to pave the way for Luis Palma to leave, while young Manchester City attacking midfielder James McAtee has also been continually linked with a move to Parkhead recently.
Along with Palma, there are other Celtic players who could depart this month, with Rodgers reportedly happy to allow centre-back Stephen Welsh to move on and find a new club where he can enjoy more regular playing time. A reunion with Kieran Tierney has also been mooted and now a big update has emerged regarding their pursuit of him.
Celtic in discussions to sign "special" Tierney
Writing on X on Friday morning, Romano said that Celtic have now entered negotiations for Tierney to return to the club, potentially this month.
Seeing Tierney back with the Hoops is likely to go down extremely well with supporters, with the Scot coming in and providing great competition for Greg Taylor at left-back.
The 27-year-old’s brilliance during his first stint at Parkhead saw him earn a move to Arsenal, at which point he was deemed one of the most impressive full-backs in Britain. Mikel Arteta was certainly delighted when he snapped him up, saying:
“I am really looking forward to working with him and giving him the opportunity to play. His attitude, his commitment, his willingness it’s incredible. I think he’s going to bring something special to us.”
Sadly for Tierney, he has struggled to match the hype, rarely being a key starter during Arsenal’s resurgence in recent seasons, but for that reason, he surely loves the idea of returning to Celtic.

Temba Bavuma’s stellar century went in vain for South Africa•Gallo Images
For an ODI with nothing riding on it, this one had a little bit of everything.Temba Bavuma struck his second successive international century, third in 2023, and notched up a career-best 144 but Shai Hope, captaining West Indies for the first time, trumped the home captain’s effort. Hope brought up his 14th ODI century and anchored West Indies to post their highest score against South Africa in the format and the second highest at Buffalo Park. It proved enough as West Indies registered a 48-run victory over South Africa, seven years after the last completed ODI between these two, in June 2016.West Indies, who have played all their World Cup Super League matches and barring Sri Lanka and South Africa being blanked by New Zealand and Netherlands respectively are certain to participate in the qualifiers in Zimbabwe in June, will be pleased with the way they acquitted themselves in this match. On a slow surface, their batters adapted well and there were three half-century stands in their innings, while Jason Holder, Alzarri Joseph and Akeal Hosein made good use of the short, slower ball and spin respectively to sufficiently challenge South Africa. As a result, they earned their sixth win in 28 ODIs in South Africa and 16th in 64 meetings.South Africa are also in a precarious position in terms of automatic qualification for this years’ 50-over World Cup, and will reflect on this match as a test of their depth and the work still to be done. They fielded four debutants, as a result of squad rotation, injuries and illnesses, and will know there’s work to be done. Of the three new batters – Ryan Rickleton, Tony de Zorzi and Tristan Stubbs – the first two were foxed by spin and Stubbs was victim to a short ball. The bowling newbie, Gerald Coetzee, was South Africa’s most successful and joint-most economical bowler, but was run-out as he failed to slide his bat in late in the piece. That’s a harsh criticism with more attention to be put on Lungi Ngidi lack of variations, Marco Jansen’s uncertainty on his lengths and the composition of the attack, which had only five bowlers and not enough slower bowling options.West Indies cruised to 66 without loss in eight overs before left-arm spinner Bjorn Fortuin was introduced. At domestic level, Fortuin has made a habit of taking wickets in his opening over and he did exactly that, albeit not with his best ball. Mayers pulled a half-tracker to Rickelton at deep midwicket to spark a mini-collapse. West Indies lost three wickets in 12 balls, and found themselves on 71 for 3 in the 11th over.It was up to the current and former captains – Hope and Nicholas Pooran – to rebuild. They took on the spinners, with good use of the feet and Jansen, who continued to struggle to find the right length, and shared a stand of 86 runs off 80 balls before Pooran dragged a short, slower Coetzee ball to Rassie van der Dussen at midwicket to depart for 39 and bring T20I captain, Rovman Powell to the crease.Powell should have been out six when he drilled the ball back to Tabraiz Shamsi, who could not hold on his followthrough and went on to cost South Africa 40 runs. Powell put on 80 for the fifth wicket with Hope before he bottom-edged another Coetzee short ball onto his stumps and South Africa could apply a squeeze. They gave away just eight runs in the next 22 balls, including a scoreless over from Jansen to keep West Indies fairly quiet at a crucial stage.Kyle Mayers trapped Quinton de Kock lbw for 48•Gallo Images/Getty Images
Hope neared the 90s with sixes off Fortuin and Ngidi and put on 42 with Holder, who was dismissed on review to Shamsi. Hope also lost Hosein to an inswinging Jansen yorker and then brought up his hundred off the 104th ball he faced. West Indies scored 93 runs off the last ten overs, including 40 runs off the last three overs, and Hope hit 28 runs off the last nine balls he faced to set South Africa a steep target. They were required to complete their fourth-highest successful chase and started well. Quinton de Kock, who had not played a competitive match since his last appearance at the SA20 almost six weeks ago, showed no signs of rust. He latched onto anything overpitched – and West Indies offered plenty in the first five overs – or on the pads. South Africa brought up fifty in six overs, de Kock survived an lbw appeal from Holder, which was reviewed, and was then given out on 48 to expose an inexperienced middle order that Bavuma marshalled. He brought up his third ODI fifty with a clean strike off Mayers over extra cover that went for six, similar to the stroke that took him to a second Test century last week. West Indies used the second and last review at the end of that over, when Mayers thought he had Bavuma lbw in similar fashion to de Kock but ball tracking showed it was missing leg stump.South Africa were 123 for 1 at the first drinks’ break, when West Indies brought on their legspinner Yannic Cariah. With his first ball, he beat Rickelton’s inside edge with a quick legbreak and got the lbw decision. Rickelton reviewed, reluctantly and unsuccessfully, to bring another debutant, Tony de Zorzi, to the crease. De Zorzi almost played the second ball he faced onto his stumps but it squirted past for four. He played some sweet strokes before being bowled by a flat, quick ball from Hosein.Rassie van der Dussen never looked comfortable at the crease and survived an lbw appeal and a stumping chance before pulling a Joseph bouncer to fine leg. Tristan Stubbs, on debut, top-edged a short, slower ball from Odean Smith straight up and Hope took a simple catch to open up South Africa’s lower order.Jansen’s first runs came off an outside edge, leaving Bavuma on strike, on 99, at the start of the 31st over. He sent Hosein through extra cover for a single to bring up his fourth ODI century, and second this year. South Africa still needed 121 runs off 115 balls.West Indies would have thought the game was up when Jansen holed out to long-on and Fortuin was stumped later that over, but Bavuma took it deep. He surpassed his previous career-best score of 113 and then hit three sixes off a Cariah over and confidently rotated strike with Ngidi. Their ninth-wicket stand reached 49 before Bavuma gloved Joseph down leg to end a valiant effort. South Africa were bowled out two balls later when Shamsi nicked off and Joseph finished with three.

Said effort was Grealish’s first in the Premier League since December 2023 and came on the 25th anniversary of his brother Keelan’s passing. Grealish was just four when losing his sibling in April 2000.
WHAT JACK GREALISH & PEP GUARDIOLA SAID
He pointed to the sky after finding the target against the Foxes, in an emotional celebration, and posted on social media afterwards: "With me always, especially this day. That was for you, Keelan."
Guardiola said: "Jack is an incredible human being. I didn't know [about the anniversary]. I can't imagine how tough it can be for mum and dad, his sister and all the family. It's good that this day he remembers him. I'm pretty sure they remember every single day. He scored a goal and made a good game."

Grealish was moved into a playmaking No.10 berth against Leicester, rather than being asked to line up on the flanks, and Guardiola added on the 29-year-old’s performance: "He likes to play in the middle. He's a guy who used to play free. He's comfortable playing on the side. Always between the lines he has ability. I'm happy for him. I know it's not easy when you don't play regularly. Last game in the FA Cup he played really good."

WHAT HAPPENED?
The Blues, who count NFL legend Tom Brady among their investors, were the first side to book their place in the Football League Trophy final. Wrexham, with co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney watching on from afar, had the chance to join their League One promotion rivals at the home of English football.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
They appeared to be well on course to achieve that when taking a 2-0 lead in a semi-final date with Peterborough, but conceded a stoppage-time equaliser to send the game to a penalty shootout. Paul Mullin and Elliot Lee missed from the spot, allowing the Posh to continue the defence of their EFL Trophy crown.
WHAT PHIL PARKINSON SAID
Disappointed Red Dragons boss Parkinson told reporters afterwards: “We've thrown away a chance to go to Wembley as far as I'm concerned. We were comfortable in the game, 2-0 up and made a lot of changes, I thought the lads did well.
“Two really poor goals to concede. Moments in the game of concentration and seeing the game through, particularly the second one. From a game which looked so comfortable for us, to end up not going to Wembley is very difficult to take for us all, but we've got no one else to blame but ourselves.”

DID YOU KNOW?
While silverware has fallen out of reach for Wrexham, they remain in the hunt for automatic promotion and can now focus all of their efforts on getting across that line. Parkinson added: “We've said before every round that the league is our number one priority, and it always has been, but when you get so close, we want to finish the job off. We've done well in this tournament throughout this season, but now we've got to focus on the league and learn.”

Manchester United have been nothing short of appalling this season. Erik ten Hag’s side have won just four times, with two of those victories coming against the side who are second-bottom of the Premier League – Southampton – and League One side Barnsley in the Carabao Cup.
Unsurprisingly, Ten Hag’s position as Red Devils boss has come under question of late. His side are currently sitting in an astonishing 12th in the Premier League on just 11 points and a goal difference of minus two.
In the event Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS board decide to remove the Dutchman from his position, there have been several managers linked with the post at Old Trafford.
The managers who could replace Ten Hag
Perhaps the most obvious candidate for the United job if Ten Hag was to be sacked would be Ruud van Nistelrooy. The former United striker was brought back to the club by his country at the start of the season.
Given his experience as manager of PSV Eindhoven and his position as assistant manager at Old Trafford, he has been linked with the job in the event of the United hierarchy changing manager.
The man whom the Red Devils missed out on was former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel. The German was heavily linked with the post in the summer, and talks were believed to have taken place once again. However, the FA beat INEOS in the race, and Tuchel is now England’s boss.
Thomas Frank is another option that the United board are reportedly considering. He has done a superb job in charge of Brentford, both in the Premier League and Championship. His tactical flexibility is seen as a huge draw, and he recently said in a press conference that a new job might be the “challenge I need”. It is certainly something to keep an eye on.
There are certainly some viable options for the Red Devils, although there is one manager that could be good to turn down. That manager is Simone Inzgahi.
Why Inzaghi would be a good appointment
Inter boss Inzaghi has gone from strength to strength in Milan. According to multiple reports, including one from The Daily Star at the end of September, he is a ‘serious contender’ for the hot seat at Old Trafford.
Manchester United manager target Simone Inzaghi ahead of a Champions League game.
The Italian boasts a superb record at the helm of I Nerazzurri. So far during his time at the club, the 48-year-old has managed 169 games, getting 111 wins in that time, and suffering just 27 losses. It has been a very impressive tenure so far.

Inzaghi is a manager who favours a 3-5-2 system, placing great emphasis on his wingbacks to have a real licence to get forward and act as wingers when his side has the ball.
Playing this system, the Italian has masterminded some historic wins, although the best of the bunch may well have been the 5-1 victory over bitter rivals Milan.
Should the former attacker get the United job, United fans could finally see the best of striker Joshau Zirkzee. The Dutchman joined the club in the summer from Bologna for £36.5m, although he has just one goal to his name so far, a debut strike against Fulham.
United’s number 11 might well thrive under Inzaghi should he get the United job. The Dutchman, a self-professed 9.5, could excel in the Italian’s two-striker system. His game is built around dropping deep and linking up play, although that can leave the Red Devils short of a penalty box presence.
Manchester United's Joshua Zirkzee scores vs Fulham
However, playing in a two alongside the likes of Rasmus Hojlund, a more traditional striker who operates well inside the box, could see Zirkzee thrive. United get the best of both worlds, having one of the number nines dropping deep, pulling defenders with him to link up play and vacate space, whilst also having someone in the box to get on the end of chances.
That type of combination proved fruitful last term as Inter romped to the title, with Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez scoring 37 Serie A goals between them as a fearsome front two at San Siro.
The Italian manager’s system could manage to extract the best out of the young striker, something Ten Hag simply has not managed to do so far. Playing in a front two alongside Hojlund certainly gets the best out of him on paper.
Inzaghi, described as a “supreme” boss by football scout Antonio Mango, could be the ideal candidate to replace Ten Hag.
Not only is he an excellent tactician and motivator, but his system might get the best out of United’s forwards in a season where they have scored just seven Premier League goals.

The potential incoming boss is desperate to bring someone with him to Old Trafford.
