Kyle Mayers hundred in vain as four New Zealand half-centurions seal series 2-1

Latham (69), Mitchell (63), Guptill (57) and Conway (56) make short work of a chase of 302

Associated Press22-Aug-2022Four batters posted half centuries as New Zealand overhauled the West Indies’ total of 301 for 8 to win the third ODI on Sunday by five wickets and clinch the series 2-1.Tom Latham scored 69 and put on 120 for the fourth wicket with Daryl Mitchell (63) in a stand which paced the run chase and carried New Zealand in sight of victory.WI fined for slow over-rate

West Indies have been fined 40% of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate in the final ODI. They were found to be two overs short after time allowances were taken into consideration and, in accordance with the World Cup Super League playing conditions, docked two points from their tally.

Martin Guptill (57) and Devon Conway (56) had earlier combined to add 82 runs for the second wicket to give New Zealand a platform for a demanding chase.Mitchell was out with the score on 248 in the 42nd over and Latham at 259 in the 44th, with New Zealand still requiring 43 runs. Jimmy Neesham settled the issue with a decisive innings of 34 from 11 deliveries, taking 18 runs from the 45th over bowled by Yannic Cariah.Neesham hit a six from the bowling of West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran to end the chase with 17 balls remaining.”It was obviously nice to make a contribution,” Latham said. “I think the partnership that Daryl and I were able to make put them under pressure. We set a target of getting to that 40-over mark where we needed a run a ball.”Kyle Mayers acknowledges his second ODI hundred•AFP/Getty ImagesLatham appeared to have erred when he chose to bowl first and as the West Indies flourished in good batting conditions.Kyle Mayers made 105 in a 173-run opening partnership with Shai Hope, and Pooran smashed nine sixes in a rapid 91 for the West Indies. The pitch proved much better for batting than those on which the West Indies won the first match by five wickets and New Zealand won the second by 50 runs. The highest previous total in the series was New Zealand’s 212 in the second match.Mayers and Hope stayed together for almost 35 overs to shape the West Indies innings. Their partnership ended when Hope was out for 51 off 100 balls and, as often happens with large partnerships, Mayers was out two balls later and without addition to the total. Brandon King fell soon afterwards with the score at 181 for 3 in a sudden reversal for the West Indies. But Pooran picked up the pace again, posting a half-century from 33 balls. He had hit nine sixes and and four fours from 55 balls when he was out in the 49th over.Mayers and Hope made a cautious start to the innings as they found the pace of the new pitch, crawling to 24 after 10 overs, negotiating a short rain break in the seventh over.”I took my time in the powerplay and it gave me the chance to get in. The last two games I got out in the powerplay,” Mayers said in a television interview. “It’s not every day you bat the powerplay for 20 runs but it worked out well in the end.”

Bangladesh, West Indies prepare to do battle with puzzles to solve

Big picture: Nothing to separate the two teams

West Indies are wary of the Dhaka pitch, and Bangladesh are trying to get out of their ODI funk as they face each other in the first ODI on Saturday. Ranking points are up for grabs with both teams setting their sights on automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup. And there’s little to separate them historically – they have won six bilateral ODI series each over the years.Bangladesh have to sort out a batting puzzle. Soumya Sarkar’s inclusion means Tanzid Hasan will likely have to stay on the bench. Saif Hassan is an automatic choice, though he needs to strengthen his position with a big innings. Najmul Hossain Shanto’s form is still a concern, though he is getting a longer rope than some others have got over the years.Related

Towhid Hridoy, Jaker Ali and Nurul Hasan also weren’t among the runs against Afghanistan. Mehidy Hasan Miraz has scored runs but his strike rate has come under fire in the last two ODI series. The national selectors have added Mahidul Islam to the mix, while Shamim Hossain is another middle-order option.Bangladesh’s only plus point is their bowling. The fast bowlers have been rotated smoothly, and have done well in most conditions. Spinners Rishad Hossain and Tanvir Islam have also been in control of proceedings for the most part. They will be licking their lips with the Shere Bangla National Stadium pitch in front of them.It will be the same for Gudakesh Motie and Roston Chase, the spin twins who have brought West Indies some success in recent times. They have Shai Hope and Chase for batting experience in Bangladeshi conditions, while the likes of Brandon King, Keacy Carty, Alick Athanaze and Amir Jangoo will combine to provide the rest of the batting firepower.Jayden Seales will have good memories from the last time he played against Bangladesh, at the end of 2024. In the spotlight: Tanvir Islam and Keacy CartyTanvir Islam was one of Bangladesh’s rare consistent performers in the Afghanistan series. He is also one of the few automatic choices in the current ODI setup. It’s early days, but Keacy Carty has provided West Indies with stability at No 3. Team news: Soumya, Mahidul could enter XI

Soumya and Mahidul might slot into Bangladesh’s line-up after being called up for the series.Bangladesh (probable): 1 Soumya Sarkar, 2 Saif Hassan, 3 Najmul Hossain Shanto, 4 Mahidul Islam, 5 Mehidy Hasan Miraz (capt), 6 Jaker Ali, 7 Nurul Hasan (wk), 8 Rishad Hossain, 9 Nahid Rana, 10 Tanvir Islam, 11 Hasan Mahmud.Athanaze is the most likely batter to replace Evin Lewis from West Indies’ last ODI against Pakistan in August. They also have Jangoo, Ackeem Auguste and Khary Pierre as allrounders.West Indies (probable): 1 Brandon King, 2 Alick Athanaze, 3 Keacy Carty, 4 Shai Hope (capt & wk), 5 Sherfane Rutherford, 6 Roston Chase, 7 Gudakesh Motie, 8 Justin Greaves, 9 Romario Shepherd, 10 Shamar Joseph, 11 Jayden Seales.

Pitch and conditions

A sneak peek of the Shere Bangla National Stadium pitch the day before the first ODI revealed a dark surface, which strongly suggests slow turn and a bit of low bounce. There is light rain forecast on an otherwise warm day.

  • Only Hope and Chase from the current West Indies squad have played ODIs in Bangladesh.
  • Bangladesh have lost their last five ODI series dating back to November last year. In that time, they have only won two of their 14 matches.

Bean and gone for Durham as record ton keeps Yorkshire top

Left-hander belts 53-ball hundred to maintain Yorkshire’s relentless march towards knockouts

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay22-Aug-2025Yorkshire 354 for 7 (Bean 102*, Wharton 84) beat Durham 142 (White 3-24) by 212 runsFinlay Bean broke Yorkshire’s record for their fastest-ever List A century with a 53-ball hundred in a landslide 212-run win over Durham at Scarborough to maintain their relentless march towards the Metro Bank One-Day Cup knockouts.Bean, batting at No. 5, boosted the Group B leaders to a total of 354 for 7 with a destructive innings of 102 not out off 57 balls, with eight fours and six sixes. James Wharton also contributed a dynamic career best 84. In only his second appearance of the competition, Bean’s maiden List A hundred set Yorkshire up for the fifth win in six matches.Durham then crumbled to 142 all out in 36 overs, losing their fourth game in seven to all but end their knockout hopes. This was their heaviest-ever List A defeat by runs margin. New-ball seamer Jack White returned 3 for 24 from eight overs for the hosts.Yorkshire started solidly under an overcast sky on a pitch with pace and bounce, reaching 99 for 2 after 20 overs. Imam-ul-Haq was caught behind pulling at Ben Raine’s seam for 22 – his lowest score in five One-Day Cup matches – and Adam Lyth caught at deep backward square-leg for 37 following a top-edge against former team-mate Will Rhodes.Having reached 123 for 2 after 25 overs, Will Luxton and Wharton looked to accelerate, and did so for a period as they shared 88 in entertaining fashion. Luxton pulled Raine for six over deep backward square-leg and Wharton also pulled with authority en route to a 54-ball fifty.Almost immediately afterwards, Luxton – on 46 – miscued the pace of Sam Conners to midwicket with the score on 169 in the 33rd. But that only served to bring Bean to the crease, and what followed was sensational. He shared a 101-run stand for the fourth wicket with Wharton.Best known as a determined red-ball opener, Bean reached 50 off 33 balls and scored his second fifty off 20. All of his sixes were leg-side as he beat the previous record for Yorkshire’s fastest List A hundred by seven balls. Lyth, on this ground in 2016, reached his hundred in 60 balls in a two-wicket win over Northamptonshire.Wharton fell short of his own maiden List A hundred as the White Rose scored 174 in the last 15 overs.Durham’s chase then got off to a nightmare start at nine for two in the fifth over, which included two wickets for Ben Coad’s seam and the visitors failing to score off the first 22 balls of the innings.Coad bowled Alex Lees for nought and had Emilio Gay caught at second slip but walked off the field immediately after the second wicket with a suspected hamstring injury. Still, it didn’t hamper Yorkshire in the short term – even if it may do in the next month and a bit.Durham’s race was run before it had got going, with them sinking to 32 for four in the 10th over. Matt Milnes had an uppercutting Colin Ackermann caught behind and White forced captain Ollie Robinson to miscue to Bean at point. George Hill and captain Dom Bess then removed Scott Borthwick and Robbie Bowman before Durham reached 50.Rhodes and George Drissell were Durham’s only two batters to reach 20, with 27 and a consolatory List A best 46 respectively. Rhodes was caught at short third off Lyth’s offspin before Drissell skied White to mid-on, leaving the score at 131 for 9. White finished things off by trapping Codi Yusuf lbw.

ICC set to approve continental qualification system for LA Olympics 2028

The ICC is set to approve a continental qualification system to decide the six participating teams in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. That means that Full Members such as Pakistan, New Zealand and Sri Lanka among others, could miss out on cricket’s much-anticipated return to the Olympics after over a century.ESPNcricinfo understands that the board discussed a proposal at the recent AGM which allows for one team from each continent. Though some details still need to be finalised, in essence, the majority approval for a regional qualification system is in place, with a minority of members expressing dissent.Six teams each in the men’s and women’s categories will contest for Olympic medals between July 14 and 29 in 2028 after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) allowed cricket to be added to the roster for the first time since the Paris 1900 Olympics. While the ICC’s initial thinking was that it would shortlist the top six-ranked teams at a pre-determined cut-off date, several Full Member countries believed such an approach wouldn’t allow for a wider representation of countries from across the globe.Related

That has now changed to a one-country-per-continent qualification system, which is thought to be more in line with the Olympic participation ethos.Which countries are shortlisted will be based on the rankings on a set date. But if the ICC plan goes through, it could mean the Olympics may not have one of the most widely watched contests in global sport: India vs Pakistan. Based on the current ICC T20 rankings, in both men’s and women’s competitions, India will qualify from Asia, Australia from Oceania, England from Europe, with one between USA or one of the islands from the Caribbean from the Americas, while South Africa qualify from Africa. ESPNcricinfo understands that the ICC is still discussing the participation of USA, who potentially get direct entry as hosts. But questions remain around the make-up of the USA men’s team, the majority of whom are US residents but not naturalised US citizens. The ICC is also concerned that the USA women’s team are not in the top 20-ranked teams at the moment. A final decision is likely to be taken at the ICC’s next quarterly meeting in October. The ECB, along with Cricket Scotland and Cricket Ireland, have formed Great Britain Cricket as an entity, which will help facilitate players from England, Scotland and Northern Ireland to represent Great Britain at the Games. An artist impression of Brisbane Stadium in Victoria Park for Brisbane 2032 Olympics•Queensland Government

As for West Indies, CWI wrote to ICC in May, pitching two ideas that could allow one of the regional countries to represent the Caribbean in the Olympics. One suggestion was an internal qualifying tournament conducted among the Caribbean countries with the winner heading to the Olympics. The other involved conducting a global qualifying pathway that would pit countries in the five ICC development regions alongside regions in the West Indies. For the sixth team, the ICC is considering the option of a global qualifier, the structure for which is still being fine-tuned.Speaking on Thursday to BBC’s , ECB chairman Richard Thompson said that the IOC was keen on having a team from each continent which satisfies the Olympics charter. “The preference from the IOC is to work to the ‘five ring’ principle, which is teams from each of the continents represent their continent,” Thompson said. The ICC is also optimistic about increasing the number of participating teams in the next two Olympics – in 2032 in Brisbane and in 2036, the venue for which is yet to be finalised by IOC. Thompson said that with India expected to bid hard to host the 2036 Summer Games, cricket could receive a massive boost.”The hope is, when we get to Brisbane, we might be up to eight or ten teams, and in 2036, there’s a three-way shoot-out between Qatar, Saudi and India, and clearly the real hope is that India get in it 2036, in which case, cricket will be front and centre. Who knows? It could be ten or 12 teams by that stage.”At this stage, we are there by the invitation of the IOC and on that basis, you abide by their rules, and that is to play the geography of your game as opposed to necessarily the top six playing nations.”

Man Utd now plan to smash transfer record for £100m "powerhouse" in 2026

Manchester United are now planning to smash their transfer record for a £100m “powerhouse” in 2026, having identified him as their prime target for Ruben Amorim’s system.

INEOS' decision to appoint Amorim questioned by Carragher

It has been far from an ideal start to the new season for Man United, having been dumped out of the EFL Cup by Grimsby Town, and won just one of their first three Premier League games, and Jamie Carragher has now questioned the decision to appoint Ruben Amorim.

Speaking on a new edition of The Overlap (47:39), the Liverpool legend claimed the board are to blame for hiring Amorim, given that they always knew he was going to instill a three-at-the-back system.

Carragher said: “So Manchester United right now, let’s say they’re a team in the middle of the table quality-wise, so they get asked questions defensively, at this moment the manager can’t answer. It’s too easy to play against.

“That’s my thing, but he’s never gonna change. So when we keep saying change, and I do think Manchester United have the players to play 4-3-3 more, you’re asking a manager who doesn’t believe in something to do something. That’s his thing – the guy that brought him in, it’s his fault.”

ByDominic Lund Sep 3, 2025

The three-at-the-back system clearly isn’t working, with Amorim averaging just 1.37 points per match since arriving at Old Trafford, but INEOS are continuing to search for players who they believe would be a perfect fit in the formation.

That is according to a report from TEAMtalk, which states Man United are now planning to smash their existing transfer record with a £100m+ move for Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba in 2026.

Baleba has been identified as a prime target to enhance Amorim’s system, and the Red Devils made contact in the summer to ensure Brighton are well-aware their interest is concrete, with the £100m+ asking price failing to deter them.

"Powerhouse" Baleba would be statement signing for Man Utd

Despite their struggles last season, United had no trouble competing for some highly sought-after players in the summer, winning the race for Benjamin Sesko, despite Newcastle United being well-known to hold an interest.

As such, Amorim’s side may still stand a chance of being able to sign the Brighton star, who would be a real statement signing, having made a name for himself with the Seagulls over the past three seasons.

Journalist Ryan Adsett was left particularly enamoured by the 21-year-old’s performances in the 2023-24 campaign, saying: “Carlos Baleba isn’t a Moisés Caicedo replacement. He’s very different – an agile powerhouse in midfield. Very entertaining watch, strong in the tackle and more than comfortable on the ball.”

With United identifying Baleba as an ideal fit in Amorim’s system, it is little wonder they are planning to make a huge bid, but it remains to be seen whether the Portuguese manager can make it to the January transfer window…

Huge upgrade on Strand Larsen: Newcastle in talks to sign "special" £50m CF

da bet7: Newcastle United are days away from learning their pathway throughout the Champions League group phase, having finished fifth in the Premier League last term and thus restored their position in Europe’s elite competition.

da betway: Eddie Howe’s side are also mere hours away from facing Liverpool in the top flight, with the narrative inextricably going to weave around the absent Alexander Isak.

Howe has fought tooth and nail to build St. James’ Park up since arriving almost four years ago, piecing facet upon facet and spending wisely to enjoy European football, first-class players and, most impressively, a domestic cup, their first in 56 years.

But that progress has been threatened over the past month or two, with Isak, the Magpie talisman, desperate to leave the club and join Arne Slot’s Premier League champions.

PIF don’t want this to happen, but Newcastle need strikers regardless.

Newcastle chasing late-window deal for strikers

It’s imperative that Newcastle sign a striker before the transfer deadline, even if Isak ends up staying put. Brentford’s Yoane Wissa is the primary target right now, and though Keith Andrews doesn’t want to lose his prolific forward, Wissa is determined to join the Toon.

Brentford are playing hardball, and so the culmination of that one remains an uncertain thing. But Newcastle aren’t restricted to just one target, with Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Jørgen Strand Larsen also high on the Tynesiders’ list.

The 25-year-old impressed on loan at Molineux last season, scoring 14 goals and supplying five assists across 38 matches. He has since seen his sojourn become a permanent stay.

Strand Larsen is a talented forward, a proven goalscorer in the Premier League for a relegation-threatened side. However, he’s very much a target man.

There’s nothing wrong with that, but if Newcastle sign Wissa too, a bit more variation might be good, especially with the Norwegian priced at a hefty £65m.

Newcastle call for Strand Larsen alternative

According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle have called Chelsea as they continue to weigh up a formal bid for Nicolas Jackson, although they are joined in their interest by Aston Villa and Bayern Munich.

Jackson has been excluded from Enzo Maresca’s first-team set-up at Stamford Bridge, and his departure within the week looks nailed on.

Newcastle will need to act swiftly if they wish to sign the Senegalese player, and must weigh up whether they are willing to meet Chelsea’s £50m asking price.

Why Newcastle want to sign Jackson

Jackson joined Chelsea two years ago, leaving Villarreal in Spain after a potent end to his time in La Liga, scoring ten goals across the final two months of the 2022/23 campaign.

The 24-year-old’s time at Chelsea has been characterised by ebb and flow, but so too has he shown plenty of promise, and if the Blues cash in, it might come back to bite them.

Mobile and effective in the build-up, Jackson has a lot about him, albeit he has yet to release the shackles of wastefulness in front of goal, with Sofascore recording that he missed 43 big chances across his first two Premier League campaigns.

However, Howe has the managerial skills and the vacancy at number nine which could allow Jackson to hit new levels, smoothing out the wrinkles in his skill set and proving a confident talisman for Newcastle.

Data-driven platform FBref have chalked down the data and inferred a likeness to Isak, which underscores Jackson’s complete take on the striker’s game. It’s what the Toon need, especially if they sign Wissa.

What they don’t need is Wissa and Strand Larsen, those reliable but limited-in-scope strikers who would best enhance United’s fluency if partnered with another centre-forward of a wider capacity.

As you can see above, Jackson’s underlying data reveals him to be more creative, progressive and combative than the 6 foot 4 Strand Larsen, and while he is tainted by his profligacy, Howe could scour out such a foible at Newcastle, having proven time and time again his ability to bring out the best in his players.

Praised as a “special” player by journalist Rahman Osman, Jackson might not feel like the most attractive of names right now, but he has so much potential, and Newcastle could offer the stable and warm conditions to give rise to those areas of his arsenal that have yet to bloom.

Jackson’s sporadic bursts of prolificness confirm that he has it within him to be a consistent marksman, and, flanked by Anthony Gordon and Anthony Elanga at St. James’ Park, he might just hit the jackpot by opting to sign his signature in black and white, ignoring the advances of Villa and Bayern.

Strand Larsen might have racked up 14 goals last season, but Wissa scored 19 for Brentford and played a similar role.

Given that Wolves want silly money for their striker, it seems reasonable that Newcastle shelve their curiosity and instead push ahead with a deal for Jackson, that talented Chelsea striker who awaits the right project to ignite his potential.

Man Utd line up bid to sign Mainoo’s dream partner for the next decade

Truth be told, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS have a gigantic task on their hands this summer as they look to return Manchester United to their glory days.

This season simply hasn’t been good enough under Erik ten Hag, with the team conceding their highest total goals since 1971 with 82.

Huge decisions will be made by the new ownership, with the manager spot under threat and plenty of players set to be sent packing.

A cultural shift is needed at Old Trafford, and Ratcliffe will look to begin by signing young talent for lesser fees, a complete change from the recent overpaying for mediocre profiles.

Man Utd’s search for youthful star

According to a report from the Northern Echo this week, Man United are lining up a bid for Sunderland’s Chris Rigg.

At just 16 years old, the Black Cat is yet to sign his first professional contract at the club, but Sunderland are hoping that he opts to continue his development at the club.

Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg.

The report mentions that Manchester United “are poised to make the strongest move for Rigg,” but the potential fee is unknown.

However, the Red Devils won’t be alone in their pursuit of the wonderkid, with the likes of Newcastle United, Arsenal, and Bayer Leverkusen also monitoring him.

Imagine Rigg and Mainoo

Ratcliffe will be absolutely thrilled to have Kobbie Mainoo already in his squad, who has taken his opportunity in the first team and become undroppable.

Since his Man United debut in November, the 19-year-old has started a further 21 Premier League games, scoring two goals, running the show from midfield and being handed his England debut by Gareth Southgate. Impressive work indeed.

Not just has the number 37’s quality, maturity and confidence been rewarded by his country, but a new contract is also reportedly in the works to keep the superstar at the club for the foreseeable future.

It’s clear that Ratcliffe looks set to plan ahead to ensure long-term success at the club by signing Rigg, who could thrive at the heart of the Red Devils midfield for years to come alongside Mainoo.

As you can see by the table below showcasing Rigg’s performance against Leicester City earlier this season, it’s extremely clear that the teenager has a vast skill set. He notably won seven of his eight duels and completed all three of his dribbles.

Therefore, the “wonderful” ace, as dubbed by former Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray, has already proven that he can hold his own against top players, which is extremely impressive for a 16-year-old.

Despite being so inexperienced, the number 31 has featured 21 times in the Championship this season, with an average of 38 minutes per game. However, although he’s had limited minutes, it’s obvious that Rigg has the potential to be a special player, with Richard Amofa of the Athletic saying that he’s "going right to the very top."

Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg.

The Sunderland academy star is a versatile midfielder who can play out wide or more centrally due to his technical class and ability to work relentlessly off the ball, as shown by his two tackles and 43 touches in that clash with the Foxes.

Yet what makes Rigg even more remarkable is the fact that he can impact the game in the final third, whether that be via his silky dribbling, vision, or serving as a direct threat himself, as displayed via his successful dribbles, shots, and one key pass.

To conclude, the potential of having both Rigg and Mainoo on the same side for the foreseeable future is extremely exciting, and it would certainly be a sign of intent from Ratcliffe.

Man Utd must cash in on 4/10 flop who's now worth even less than Casemiro

This struggling Red Devil is not proving that he deserves a future at Old Trafford.

Liverpool targeting £65m “tank” who’d be Slot’s own Van Dijk

Liverpool were in a bit of a pickle during the 2022/23 campaign, but Jurgen Klopp engineered a resurgence that saw a thrilling midfield overhaul and a return to prominence, winning the Carabao Cup and fighting for the Premier League title, ultimately finishing third.

Did Liverpool fail in their pursuit of English football's pinnacle prize, or did Klopp's team actually overachieve, buoyed by the innate belief of a squad led by a unique kingpin, fuelled by the desire to make his final hour a thing of beauty?

Whatever the consensus, Liverpool's revamped infrastructure, dissembled and pieced back together with new bricks by Michael Edwards and his FSG cohort, will be confident that the new era at Anfield can bring trophies and thrilling campaigns.

Feyenoord coachArneSlot

Arne Slot is now geared as Liverpool's head coach, and while there has been comparative quietness on the transfer front thus far, you can be sure that the cogs are moving beneath the surface. Klopp solved the midfield problem one year ago, but now, fixing the backline is the pressing concern.

Liverpool lining up new defender

Last week, The Athletic's David Ornstein revealed that Liverpool are among the contenders for Leny Yoro, an 18-year-old centre-back with the world at his feet, though there appears to be a tacit understanding that he will join Real Madrid, such is the way of things.

Edwards is unlikely to focus on one target, mind, with a recent report from the Telegraph claiming that Liverpool have been alerted to the possible availability of Euro 2024 star Marc Guehi.

It's revealed that Crystal Palace will only entertain offers of £65m for their star defender, but it's paramount that the Reds sign a high-level centre-back this summer and the 23-year-old could be the man.

Marc Guehi's season in numbers

Palace signed Guehi from Chelsea in an £18m deal in 2021, with the Englishman since completing 111 appearances, scoring five goals.

Still young, Guehi has enjoyed year-on-year growth at Selhurst Park, playing his finest football during the recently completed campaign. As per Sofascore, the £50k-per-week ace featured 25 times in the Premier League (missing several months due to injury), and while Roy Hodgson struggled to make the London club click before his February dismissal, Guehi was immense.

The "absolute tank" – as former England U21 teammate Josef Bursik once dubbed him – won a whopping 67% of his ground duels and completed 87% of his passes despite the possession-lacking nature of Hodgson's style. He recovered 4.8 balls and swept away 3.5 more on average, excelling on the left side of the central defence.

Guehi held his own and then some on his international tournament debut, with his gritty defensive style blending nicely with the more dynamic and expressive style of Manchester City's John Stones.

Liverpool have creative, modern-day-encapsulating defenders in Virgil van Dijk and the 6 foot 4 Konate. Guehi is certainly not one-dimensional, nor is he antiquated in his approach, but he is more of a natural defender. The clue is in the title: Guehi defends—no-nonsense, exuding command.

Marc Guehi for England

He would certainly add something extra, different, even, to Liverpool's backline, and must be signed this summer, for Slot could even emulate his predecessor in completing a transformative deal.

Why Liverpool should sign Marc Guehi

Guehi would prove to be Slot's very own Van Dijk. Signed for a big fee from a lower-down-the-ladder Premier League rival to add some impetus and inspiration to a defensive line that has not looked at its best for a few years.

Liverpool have one of the most talented backlines in Europe. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson have formed an iconic wide partnership, while Van Dijk has been described as "the best defender in the world" by Klopp.

But there's little point hiding from the fact that Liverpool's collective might in the bottommost third has faltered in recent years; Klopp's final few years brought a rollercoaster of emotions and fortunes but the regression in defensive quality is unquestionable.

The urgency to rectify this, under Slot, runs deeper than merely a lack of numbers due to Joel Matip's summer exit at the end of his contract. This is why signing a player of Guehi's ability is so important, lest Slot fail to stamp his style into the Anfield first team, leaking fluency- and confidence-inhibiting goals.

And despite the aforementioned discussion about Guehi's steely basal skill set, he's not exactly a bad ball-carrying asset. The clip above shows the success he can find when shuttling forward, weaving past opponents to progress the ball into a promising position.

The 6-foot star's aerial prowess does leave something to be desired: Guehi won only 50% of his 1.2 aerial battles per game in the English top flight last term. Van Dijk, conversely, triumphed in 81% of his 3.9 duels per game.

But there are few more devastating in the duel than the Eagles colossus, who could spread his wings at Liverpool and make a groundbreaking impact under Slot, who could restore Liverpool's acumen in defence.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

£65m is no small sum but Liverpool need to signal their intent at the start of this new chapter, and Guehi could be the player to make the biggest difference at the most crucial of points in Anfield's rich history.

However, if Pep Guardiola's side make it four titles on the bounce, then it's back to the drawing board for sporting director Edu and Arteta ahead of what will be a very eventful summer transfer window.

Some reports have suggested that Arsenal are set to smash their summer transfer record in a bid to back Arteta, which comes as quite an exciting prospect given they spent over £200 million last year.

In terms of who they could bring in, it is widely recognised that Arsenal will be looking to bring in a new striker. The likes of Ivan Toney and Victor Osimhen are just two of the many names being linked in this regard.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney

"It's no great secret that Arsenal want to sign a striker this summer. When the window opens it will be the priority, along with a midfielder and potentially another wide attacker," said reliable journalist Charles Watts.

"It will be interesting to see whether they move for Victor Osimhen. He, like Toney, is a player they like and I know that his representatives have visited Arsenal's training ground for talks with Edu.

"Those talks took place in the summer when Arsenal eventually signed Gabriel Jesus. Jesus was always the priority that year, but Osimhen was definitely a player they viewed as a serious alternative."

According to journalist Mirko Di Natale, another striker they really like is £214,000-per-week Juventus star Dusan Vlahovic. Previous reports have claimed that Arteta is "attracted" to Vlahovic's playing style, and it would appear the Spaniard remains a fan.

Arsenal showing "strong" Vlahovic interest

Di Natale has told TV Play’s Ti Amo Calciomercato, as relayed by Sport Witness, that Arsenal are showing a "strong" interest in signing Vlahovic this summer.

“I know that the contacts are positive and there are good chances of a conclusion like for Vlahović, for whom Arsenal are showing strong interest from England," said the reporter on Vlahobic's contract situation.

"Juve and Vlahović will have to find an agreement and ensure that both parties are satisfied. If they don’t reach an agreement within the summer window, Vlahović can enter Juve’s transfer window and ensure that he can be one of those exits that Giuntoli has in mind this summer."
