Celtic in talks to sell international defender for 7-figure loss

A “superb” Celtic player is now in talks over a move away during the summer transfer window, according to Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph.

The Hoops continue to push hard for new signings this summer, with Aston Villa youngster Louie Barry seen as an option to come in and bolster Brendan Rodgers’ squad.

The 22-year-old excelled on loan at Championship side Hull City last season, scoring 15 goals in just 22 starts in the league, and could be sold in a hurry as Villa look to beat the PSR deadline in England.

Girona striker Bojan Miovski has also been mentioned as an option for Celtic ahead of next season, with the 26-year-old proving himself at Aberdeen in the past, scoring an impressive 44 goals in 98 appearances for the club, and 30 in 68 Scottish Premiership matches.

Yverdon Sport midfielder Moussa Baradji is another name in the mix, being tipped to potentially have as big an impact as Victor Wanyama did during his time at Parkhead.

"Superb" Celtic player in talks over exit

According to Joseph on X, Celtic bosses are “in talks” with Braga over a deal for centre-back Gustaf Lagerbielke, with Championship clubs also said to be “interested” in him.

Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano reports that Braga have “sent” a bid of £1.7m the Hoops’ way, with the defender “keen” on the move. If he did leave for that amount, Celtc would make a £1.3m loss, having signed him for £3m.

This does arguably feel like the right time for Lagerbielke’s Parkhead career to come to an end, even though Rodgers did hail him back in 2023 after a rare goal, praising his “superb” mentality.

“It was a great moment for him because he hasn’t been involved in squads, other guys have been in front of him. But his attitude in training in the main has been superb and he has always been ready. The irony of him being sent off and then getting the goal was great, a really nice moment for him.”

Last season, Lagebielke was loaned out to Dutch side FC Twente, with Celtic finding it hard to justify a place for him in the squad, and it doesn’t look as though the 25-year-old’s situation is going to change next term.

The Sweden international is at a point in his career where he needs to be featuring regularly at a permanent club, rather than warming the substitutes’ bench or being loaned out.

Dream Kuhn replacement: Celtic weighing up bid to sign "electric" £12m star

With Nicolas Kühn seemingly set to leave Celtic this summer, could Brendan Rodgers sign an “absolutely electric” replacement?

ByBen Gray Jun 27, 2025

He still has three years remaining on his current Celtic deal, so there is no reason why the Scottish champions can’t still receive a decent fee for him – more than £1.7m would be preferable – and he would surely jump at the opportunity to enjoy a fresh challenge.

Barcelona drop Denzel Dumfries interest despite Inter star's approach with Catalan side fighting to keep Man City target Jules Kounde

Barcelona have turned down a proposal to sign Denzel Dumfries, opting to focus on keeping Jules Kounde amid interest from Manchester City.

Jorge Mendes offered Dumfries to Barcelona€25m release clause expires July 31Barca planning long-term deal for KoundeFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

According to , agent Jorge Mendes offered Dumfries to Barcelona in a summer proposal, but the club have declined to move forward with the deal. While the Dutchman was once on Barca’s radar, the Catalans have chosen not to act, largely due to their confidence in Kounde, who is set to remain their primary right-back.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Dumfries is reportedly available for just €25 million (£21m/$29m) due to a temporary release clause that expires at the end of the month. Yet, with City circling Kounde, the Blaugrana are instead working on convincing the France international to sign a new contract and join their bid to retain their La Liga crown.

DID YOU KNOW?

Dutch international Dumfries has been a key figure for Inter, recording 22 goals and 26 assists in 179 appearances since joining from PSV for around €15m in 2021. He renewed his contract until 2028 and reportedly earns €4m net per year.

Getty Images SportWHAT NEXT FOR BARCELONA?

Unless Barcelona face a sudden departure or bid for Kounde, they are unlikely to revisit Dumfries. Their focus remains on keeping their current defensive core intact. City’s interest in Kounde could force Barcelona to act fast in securing a new contract to ward off any serious advances before the transfer window closes.

A century of Tests: Advantage Australia, but India catching up

Before 2001, Australia had a 28-11 lead, but since then India have won 17 and lost only 15 Tests against Australia

S Rajesh25-Dec-2020The Australia-India Test matches have been among the most intense match-ups in the last few years, and on Boxing Day, the rivalry will achieve a significant milestone: it will be the 100th Test between the two teams, and the 50th in Australia. This will be the seventh rivalry to hit the century mark; Australia and England have obviously played each other the most often – in fact, they have played more than twice as many matches as any other pair of teams. Australia have also played 100-plus Tests against West Indies, while for India it is their second entry into this club: they have also played 100-plus Tests against England.ESPNcricinfo LtdAustralia have a significant overall advantage, 43 wins to 28 defeats. Among the three teams against whom they have played 100-plus Tests, their win-loss ratio against India (1.54) sits in the middle – it is better than their ratio of 1.33 against England, but not quite as good as their record of 1.81 against West Indies. Among these seven rivalries with 100-plus Tests, the most lopsided is the one between England and New Zealand – England have won 48 out of 105, and lost only 11.As you would expect, both Australia and India have been dominant at home, but Australia have been exceptionally strong on home turf against India, winning 30 Tests and losing just seven. India have won 21 and lost 13 at home.ESPNcricinfo LtdThe Australia-India Test journey started 73 years ago, on November 28, 1947, when Brisbane hosted the first game of a five-Test series. Australia trounced the visitors by an innings and 226 – India’s match tally of 156 over two innings fell 29 short of Don Bradman’s 185 – but India improved as the series went along, though they lost 4-0. Vijay Hazare and Vinoo Mankad struck a couple of hundreds each, while Dattu Phadkar struck one and averaged 52.33. India’s first win came in 1959 in Kanpur, in the tenth Test between the two teams. That was thanks largely to Jasu Patel’s incredible match haul of 14 for 124.ESPNcricinfo LtdAustralia were utterly dominant in the first 20 Tests, winning 13 and losing just two. Since then, Australia have only stretched that advantage of 11 to 15. In fact, since 2001, India have had the edge, with a 17-15 record. Both have been equally dominant at home over the last 20 years: Australia have an 11-4 record in 21 Tests in Australia, while India have won 13 and lost four in 21.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Crystal Palace offer four-year deal worth £15m to sign "outstanding" ace

The next transfer window is not far away from opening and Crystal Palace are already close to their first summer addition, according to a recent report.

Crystal Palace step up transfer plans as contact made with multiple targets

The Eagles still have games left to play in the Premier League and, of course, their huge FA Cup final against Manchester City, but already the hierarchy are slowly working towards the summer and identifying players they would like to sign.

Contact made: Crystal Palace hold talks with agent of £60k-p/w Leeds ace

Crystal Palace are now in the race to sign a defender who is set to become a free agent.

ByBrett Worthington May 8, 2025

One player who has now emerged on Palace’s radar is Leganés midfielder Yvan Neyou, who is set to become a free agent at the end of the campaign. It’s reported that the Eagles have made an enquiry to sign Neyou to get an understanding if he would be interested in a move to England, and are considering making an offer to the midfielder.

However, they are not alone in the race, as Fulham are also interested, while Valencia are said to be leading the charge to keep him in Spain.

As well as looking to strengthen their midfield, Oliver Glasner also wants to add to his options in defence, especially at left-back. According to TBR Football, Palace have spoken to Junior Firpo’s representatives over a possible move to Selhurst Park, but they are one of many teams looking to sign the Leeds defender on a free transfer.

Crystal Palace offer four-year deal to Osayi-Samuel

The Eagles are well and truly looking to get their transfer business done early this summer, as according to Fotomac, relayed by Sport Witness, Crystal Palace are close to signing Bright Osayi-Samuel from Turkish giants Fenerbahçe.

Osayi-Samuel is coming to the end of his contract with Fenerbahçe, and it looks increasingly likely he will be leaving and making a return to English football. The report states that Palace have been in transfer talks with the defender and have offered a four-year deal worth €4.5 million a season, which is roughly £3.8 million and a total of £15 million over the four campaigns.

It goes on to add that an agreement is close to being reached despite the fact that Fenerbahçe manager José Mourinho has tried to keep Osayi-Samuel at the club and an offer of a contract extension has been put on the table. The 27-year-old, who has been dubbed “outstanding” in the past by Mark Warburton, has played 21 times in the Super Lig this season, as well as featuring nine times in the Europa League.

Osayi-Samuel was originally a winger but has now become a right-back in the later part of his career. Palace obviously believe that his ability in that position could bring something different to what they currently have. The Eagles do have Daniel Munoz and Nathaniel Clyne as their senior right-backs, but Munoz has been linked with a move away this summer and Clyne’s contract is set to expire.

Man City now make £34m+ offer to sign "incredible" Ederson replacement

Manchester City could be a force to be reckoned with in the transfer market and have made their first step to landing a priority target this summer, according to reports.

Man City look to enjoy successful summer window

The Premier League title may have headed to Anfield this season in a transitional year for the Citizens, but you get the impression they will be quick out of the blocks once the window opens for business.

Pep Guardiola acted decisively to bring in Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Juma Bah in January, and no stone will be left unturned as Manchester City aim to position themselves among the elite.

Sky Sports: Nottingham Forest keen on signing "special" £25m Man City ace

Nottingham Forest are the latest team to show interest in signing an attacker from Manchester City.

ByBrett Worthington Apr 26, 2025

With some statement arrivals on the agenda, the Blues are said to be keen on a move for Paris Saint-Germain star Desire Doue, even if they will have to stump up £85 million or over to have a chance of landing his services.

Barcelona winger Raphinha is another high calibre target at the Etihad Stadium and he is believed to be among their priority options to strengthen out wide due to his excellent form for club and country.

Even if the Citizens were to miss out on Champions League football, they still hold an appeal that very few would be able to match with Guardiola’s long-term project likely to yield further silverware.

Nevertheless, Manchester City remain at a vantage point from which they will be confident they can finish the job before a summer when changes could be made to fuel the fire for success. Now, they have taken a step forward in their pursuit of another key target as their ruthless approach to recruitment begins to take its course.

Man City submit £34m+ offer for Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa

According to reports, Manchester City have submitted an initial £34.1 million offer for Porto stopper Diogo Costa and look set to improve on their opening bid, which was rejected, sooner rather than later.

FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa.

The Portugal international’s contract includes a £64 million release clause, but he may be allowed to leave for a fee in the region of £51.1 million if appropriate interest arises for his services.

Labelled “incredible” by countryman Diogo Dalot, Costa has kept 18 clean sheets in 44 appearances across all competitions this season as Porto look to seal continental qualification.

Ederson is expected to leave Manchester City for Saudi Arabia, so it is intriguing to see that they have now upped the ante in pursuing a long-term replacement for the Brazil international.

Looking ahead, it seems plausible that progress could be made in their move for Costa and it will be intriguing to see if he does end up becoming the man between the sticks at the Etihad Stadium.

Gurbaz, Ibrahim and Farooqi hand Uganda a thrashing

Gurbaz and Ibrahim added a 154-run opening stand, while Farooqi claimed a five-for, as Afghanistan started their World Cup campaign with a bang

Mohammad Isam04-Jun-2024Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran struck fifties in the second-highest opening stand in T20 World Cup history and Fazalhaq Farooqi took his maiden five-wicket haul in T20Is as Afghanistan crushed debutants Uganda by 125 runs in their Group C game of the T20 World Cup in Guyana. Afghanistan’s 183 for 5 was too much for Uganda, who were bowled out for 58 runs in 16 overs.Farooqi’s five-for apart, Naveen-ul-Haq and captain Rashid Khan picked up two wickets each as Afghanistan ruined Uganda’s introduction to cricket’s biggest event. Uganda would, however, take heart from their comeback with the ball. Afghanistan lost 5 for 31 in the last six overs of their innings to finish well below 200. Uganda captain Brian Masaba, who bowls spin, and fast bowler Cosmas Kyewuta took two wickets each. Before the collapse, Gurbaz and Ibrahim had blasted 18 boundaries in the first 14 overs. Gurbaz made his 76 off 45 balls with four sixes and as many fours, while Ibrahim struck nine fours and a six in his 46-ball 70.

The Gurbaz-Ibrahim show

Gurbaz got things going when he lofted left-arm spinner Alpesh Ramjani to the stand beyond the long-off boundary off the second ball of the innings. Ibrahim struck Kyewuta through mid-on for his first boundary before wicketkeeper Simon Ssesazi dropped him on 16 off Ramjani. He capitalised on the chance, hitting Dinesh Nakrani for four successive boundaries in the sixth over as Afghanistan ended the powerplay on 66 for 0. Gurbaz took his sixes tally to four when he struck Henry Ssenyondo for two maximums in consecutive overs. He brought up his eighth T20I fifty in the ninth over, before Ibrahim brought up their century stand in the following over.Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran added 154 for the opening wicket•ICC via Getty Images

Ibrahim also reached his seventh fifty in T20Is before launching into Bilal Hassan for his first six, a proper slog over midwicket. It was a tough 14th over for Hassan, who conceded five wides and then was hit for a four off a no-ball. He ended up giving away 25 runs in the over, after which Afghanistan lost their way.

Masaba leads Uganda’s recovery

Ibrahim fell in the 15th over to end his 154-run stand with Gurbaz, when he missed a tossed-up ball from Masaba. Ramjani then had Gurbaz hole out to deep square leg in the following over.Masaba removed Najibullah Zadran in the 17th over, Nakrani taking the catch at the deep square leg boundary, before Kyewuta picked up his two wickets. He had Gulbadin Naib caught at long-on for four, and then in the final over, Azmatullah Omarzai skied one to short third. It was a fine comeback from Uganda after they conceded at 10.85 in the first 14 overs. They didn’t give away a single boundary in the last six overs of the innings, the first such instance in the T20 World Cup.

Pace blows away Uganda’s top half

Farooqi and Naveen took two wickets each in the powerplay as Uganda slipped to 18 for 5. Farooqi removed Ronak Patel and Roger Mukasa off consecutive deliveries in the first over. Both deliveries were fast and swung in, leaving the two batters with little time to bring down their bat. Riazat Ali Shah kept out the yorker on the hat-trick ball but there was no respite for Uganda.Mujeeb Ur Rahman had Ssesazi caught at short fine leg, before Naveen had Nakrani bowled off his inside edge in the fifth over. One ball later, Ramjani edged Naveen to Naib at first slip. It was Uganda’s first appearance at a World Cup, and Afghanistan underlined the gulf between the two sides.

Farooqi has five in the bag

Riazat and Robinson Obuya kept Afghanistan at bay for 7.3 overs as they added 29 runs for the sixth wicket. But the former’s 34-ball vigil ended when Farooqi, back into the attack for his third over, cleaned him up. He had captain Masaba caught behind off the next ball before Obuya, Uganda’s top scorer on the day with 14 runs, was also caught behind in the same over to hand Farooqi his five-for. Rashid took the two remaining wickets, trapping Hassan lbw and bowling Ssenyondo next ball.

Chaos theory, Diego Luna's electric effort, Matt Freese's icy veins and winners and losers from USMNT's Gold Cup semifinal-clinching shootout win over Costa Rica

Sunday night was chaotic, to put it lightly, but the shootout victory ended with the U.S. booking their spot in the semifinals

This game will be remembered by U.S. men's national team fans for all its chaotic energy, the tension of a sensational shootout and a death-defying ride on the Max Arfsten rollercoaster. Dips, turns, highs, lows, and everything in between, it was a rollercoaster Arfsten will never to repeat.

Such was the madness of it all. This ride was not for the faint of heart.

In fact, nothing on Sunday was, all the way through to the shootout. In the end, though, the U.S. rode the highest peak of that rollercoaster, and with a Gold Cup semifinal spot on the line, emerged with a shootout win over Costa Rica, seemingly against all odds.

The game finished 2-2 through 90, with Arfsten playing a direct part in all four goals – good and bad. He conceded a penalty on the first and assisted the second. He then went out and scored the game's third. But then, seemingly in the clear, he and Luca de la Torre were dribbled past on the fourth, setting up a shootout that – perhaps in the ultimate irony – Arfsten wouldn't get to participate in.

The chaos continued even without him, though. Standing tall at the end of it all was Matt Freese, who stopped three of Costa Rica's six shots from the spot to send the U.S. through, 4-3, in penalties. He, ultimately, was the hero, but he wasn't the only one. For the U.S., this was a test of resilience, and Freese, like several of his teammates, showed that ability to bounce back.

So, too, did Arfsten. Malik Tillman did as well, missing a penalty in the first half before making one in the shootout. Diego Luna scored a master-class goal that gave Mauricio Pochettino's side a needed boost at a critical time. Overall, the U.S. rolled with the punches, and that's why they're still in the competition.

"Today, they showed great character," Pochettino said. "I think it's good for this group of players to have this type of experience. I always said it's really important because the reality is, when you're in a big tournament, these things can happen, and it's important that they experience them

"OK, we give a penalty, we get a penalty, we miss a penalty. But the team kept going and kept believing in the way we play."

Now, Pochettino will hope the semifinal against Guatemala on Wednesday night isn't quite as chaotic. This particular ride is over, but the USMNT – winners of four straight now in this Gold Cup, having lost four in a row entering the tournament – have at least one more coming.

GOAL breaks down the winners and losers from U.S. Bank Stadium.

Getty ImagesWINNER: Matt Freese

Freese could not have been more prepared for this moment. Most goalkeepers spend hours studying how penalty shootouts could go. The Harvard-educated Freese took things a step further.

"I actually did a very long research project in college about penalty kicks," said Freese, who recently told GOAL about two other soccer-related projects he did in college. "To be able to rely on that type of thing and deal with statistics, reading their hips, things like that, it's all massive."

It sure was. Freese stopped three of Costa Rica's six penalty kicks. He even guessed right on two that he didn't save. Freese was clearly prepared in the closing minues, and it was largely based on data and analytics.

Ultimately, though, shootouts are defined by mentality. Which players can keep it together? Which crack? In the moments when he wasn't in goal, Freese made sure to keep his head, turning the focus within and not to the chaos around him.

"After the first save, I went over to the corner and just kept repeating to myself, 'I want another, I want another.' " Freese said. "Then, after the second, I did the same thing. I just kept telling myself that I wanted another. You can't get too happy with yourself. You can't get complacent in the middle of a shootout."

He didn't and the U.S. won as a result. On Sunday, Freese was the ultimate star, and it doesn't take any numbers, data or research projects to prove it.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWINNER/LOSER: Max Arfsten

What can you even say about Arfsten's game on Sunday? Was it good? Was it bad? It's really hard to say. What can be said, though, is that Arfsten's fingerprints were all over this one.

"Football has its ups and downs," Arfsten said. "Everybody knows that. For me, it was all about making my mark on this game."

It easily could have unraveled for Arfsten. Just minutes into Sunday's match, he conceded a back-breaking penalty, one that threatened to derail the USMNT's knockout round campaign before it ever got going.

Throughout the tournament, Pochettino has often said that the most important action is the next one. Arfsten seemingly took that to heart, shaking off his early mistake to provide a goal and an assist to help lead the U.S. to victory. His first action was a disaster, but Arfsten didn't let that stop him from finding a way to make up for it.

"I wanted to get my get-back, as some would say," Arfsten said, "and really make my mark on this game. I feel like I did that."

There was no fairytale ending, though. After contributing to the USMNT goals, Arfsten was directly involved in Costa Rica's second, too, getting dribbled past en route to Alonso Martinez's goal. It was a night of extraordinary highs and extraordinary lows. Arfsten, somehow, was involved in most of them.

"Obviously, though, there's always room to improve," he said, "but I'm happy with how I showed resiliency."

Getty Images SportWINNER: Diego Luna

It wasn't just the goal, but the timing of it. Moments before Luna hit the back of the net, the USMNT were about as low as could be. Down a goal and fresh off a missed penalty, the U.S. needed a pick-me-up.

And so Luna, as he so often does, put the team on his shoulders and made something happen. It required a generous deflection, yes, but fortune favors the bold, and Luna remains the USMNT's boldest star.

So much unfolded after it that it will likely get overlooked. Luna was long gone by the time the shootout started, and his goal was, in some ways, a distant memory given all of the chaos that happened after. That doesn't diminish Luna's impact, though, nor the impact his finish had on uplifting a young team that desperately needed it.

"A lot of ups and downs," Luna said postgame, "but that's soccer, right? I think the biggest thing is to stay mentally strong and stay positive through those tough times. Then, if it doesn't go your way, it doesn't but staying positive gives you the benefit of the doubt sometimes."

Luna continues to make a positive impact, which is why he remains such a crucial piece of this team.

Getty ImagesLOSER: Costa Rica

After the match, the USMNT's players didn't mince words. There was no sympathy for Costa Rica, and that mindset stemmed from one particular incident.

Following Tillman's missed penalty, the American midfielder was surrounded by celebrating Costa Rican players. It's a bit of he-said, he-said, of course. But whatever happened in that moment led to a very angry USMNT group. A scuffle started from that, in some ways, woke the USMNT up.

"All these teams love mind games," said Tyler Adams, who buried the USMNT's first penalty in the shootout. "It's fun. It's part of it for me. I wasn't involved in it because I know better at this point! I knew if I got a yellow, I would miss the next one but, trust me, I wanted to be more involved. In the end, we're moving on, and that's all that matters."

When the night was over and the U.S. were victorious in their own shootout, they didn't feel particularly bad for the team whose night ended with their own missed penalties. Costa Rica had their chance, particularly with the U.S. missing two of their spot kicks in extra time. They were unable to take it. According to Luna, there's a reason why.

"It's bad sportsmanship to do that to an opposition player," said Luna. "You can say it now and look at it all as karma, right? That's just something you don't do."

Spinners write another chapter in Bangladesh's growth story

The emergence of Shakib Al Hasan, Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan as a potent trio of spinners, coupled with a move towards result-oriented pitches, has helped Bangladesh grow into a formidable side in home conditions

Mohammad Isam in Mirpur28-Aug-2017There is nothing mysterious or sexy about Bangladesh’s spinners. Two left-arm orthodox spinners and an offspinner. It is not a country where anything other than conventional spin is encouraged. The country has three legspinners in first-class cricket, all of whom are routinely condemned. Left-arm bowlers who fancy bowling wristspin are told to become serious about their life. But the cream of their crop – Shakib Al Hasan, Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan – are accurate, receptive and patient. They can turn the ball a mile but are effective because they know how to control the degree of turn they impart. Bowling out Australia for 217 certainly showed how they are becoming tougher to face in home conditions.Shakib, who became only the fourth bowler to take five-wicket hauls against nine Test teams, uses the arm ball effectively against right-hand batsmen. He is also mastering the art of bowling the one that slides away from the left-handers, a difficult skill to acquire. Taijul has his limitations but he brings the batsman forward regularly, which allows him the chance to catch them on the hop at times. A straight run-up, a jump, and a delivery stride that’s all arms and legs. Yet, he ties up one end more often than not. He is underrated, hardly ever spoken about even when he takes an ODI hat-trick on debut, but he does the job.Mehidy, like Shakib and Taijul, is an accurate fingerspinner. Nothing more, nothing less. He will keep forcing the batsmen to drive but those who decide to play back to him do so with the threat of getting trapped lbw. He bowls quicker than Taijul and Shakib in Tests, and when he pitches it fuller at that pace, he can deny batsmen time to take a long stride forward, and sucker them into playing on the up.In this Test, he already has two big scalps in the first innings, illustrating that he is a competitive bowler at the highest level.David Warner, facing Mehidy, was getting troubled by deliveries that turned sharply away from him before playing back to a full one. Steven Smith, who ended up yorking himself against Mehidy, must have felt the tossed-up delivery was innocuous enough to jump at, but ended up paying the price. Mehidy said that the plan was in place to pitch it up right up at Smith, but from an angle dictated by his captain.”We had a plan for Smith,” Mehidy said. “When I bowled to him yesterday, Mushfiqur [Rahim] told me that I should bowl around the wicket to him. If I can bowl in the right place, we can stop him. He won’t be able to use his feet. There will be a chance to get him out stumped or get a catch somewhere. I listened to him, bowled around the wicket, and it made my job easy.”But there are aspects that this spin attack, despite their success in the first innings in Mirpur, have trouble grappling with. Against top-order batsmen who don’t move around too much in the crease, like Matt Renshaw and Pete Handscomb, or against tailenders who will either block or bash, they look one-dimensional, hanging back on a more defensive line.Perhaps they can be bolder in the face of a lengthy partnership, telling the captain to have more fielders around the bat, especially on a helpful pitch. Maybe they can be a bit more simplistic in their plans against tailenders, slipping in the occasional yorker or luring them out by slowing it up.But their overall skill level, coupled with a more productive batting line-up against top attacks, has coincided with a move towards preparing more result-oriented pitches. When the Shere Bangla National Stadium was relaid entirely earlier this year, the top two layers of the pitches were taken off. What has resulted is a more brownish surface that starts off hard but breaks up rapidly. There are no puffs of dust flying off the surface but certainly plenty of bite. There is no fault in having home advantage and in the last 12 months, for the first time as a Test nation, Bangladesh have ventured into that path. The spinners, however plain they may look or sound, are helping them take giant strides. They have given a great account of themselves by bowling Australia out cheaply in their first innings, and they now have the obligation to keep doing their job, simply.
