Antony's next club?! Real Betis face disappointment in bid to bring Man Utd outcast back as La Liga rivals emerge as favourites to sign winger

Antony will hope to follow in Marcus Rashford's footsteps and move out of Manchester United this summer after being deemed surplus to Rubem Amorim's needs. He spent the second half of the 2024-25 campaign on loan at Real Betis and the La Liga club would have loved to make his transfer permanent but they do not have money to secure a move for the United outcast.

Freeborn, Baker provide key contributions as Sparks thump Blaze

Emily Arlott helps set tone with ball as visitors stumble to 135 all out

ECB Reporters Network20-Apr-2024Central Sparks ended their 50-over hoodoo against the Blaze with an emphatic 78-run victory on the opening day of the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy season at Edgbaston. Eve Jones’ side had never beaten Blaze in the 50-over format but took advantage of the visitors’ long absentee list due to injury and international commitments to start the season in style. After choosing to bat, Sparks made a total that was decent rather than imposing after numerous batters made a start but didn’t build on it. Only Abi Freeborn, with 53 from 87 balls, stayed long enough against a disciplined attack led by Grace Ballinger and Sophie Munro.Blaze’s reply was then hit by a superb opening spell of 7-4-5-2 from Emily Arlott as they lurched to 14 for 3 in ten overs. Nadine de Klerk, just hours after landing in the UK from South Africa, resisted with 43 off 65 but was one of three victims for spinner Hannah Baker as Blaze’s depleted team subsided.Sparks’ innings started slowly in the face of a fine new-ball burst from de Klerk who conceded just four runs in her first four overs. When Jones tried to shed the shackles, she was bowled trying to flick Ballinger to leg.Chloe Brewer greeted the left-arm spin of Kirstie Gordon with a crisp reverse sweep for four but paid a high price for trying to repeat the shot to a ball which was too far up, falling lbw. Munro maintained the pressure for Blaze with an opening spell of 7-1-18-1 which included the removal of Davina Perrin, bowled off stump.Former Warwickshire allrounder Marie Kelly drifted a beauty past Ami Campbell to have her stumped but Freeborn advanced to a composed 82-ball half-century before missing a swipe at Munro and perishing, stumped by Ella Claridge. Katie George provided some late impetus with a 30-ball 32 with five fours before she was yorked by de Klerk.Sparks started superbly with the ball as Arlott and Issy Wong both conceded just two from their first two overs. Arlott opened with 5-3-4-2 after removing Teresa Graves, caught at mid-on, and Kelly, bowled behind her legs. Wong beat Munro for pace to win an lbw decision and when Claridge missed a slog at Bethan Ellis and was bowled, Blaze were 39 for 4 in the 18th over.De Klerk and Daisy Mullan, making her debut on a five-match loan from Thunder, halted the slide and added 51 in 77 balls before the introduction of Baker ended the revival. The spinner removed both in five balls, each time defeating an attempted cut as Mullan nicked to the wicketkeeper and de Klerk was bowled middle stump.Baker added a third wicket when Michaela Kirk ladled to deep midwicket where George, having shelled two earlier chances, this time held on.

Dean Elgar's maiden Essex century provides apt tribute to Chelmsford's departed

Essex 421 for 6 (Elgar 120, Critchley 103*, Cox 67) vs KentNothing changes with any great speed at Chelmsford. Plans are currently afoot for a grand renovation of the pavilion and its surrounding concourse – the only corner of this postage-stamp ground with any wriggle-room for expansion – though rather like this week’s announcement that the ground’s Hayes Close and River Ends have been renamed in honour of its most storied Test performers, Graham Gooch and Sir Alastair Cook, there’s been no pretence of an upgrade in signage in the interim. Indeed, the interactive “Graham Napier Sixes Trail”, with its 16 plaques to commemorate each of Napier’s swings for the bleachers in his famous T20 onslaught against Sussex in 2008, remains Chelmsford’s most visible tribute to any former player, Graham or otherwise.Until, that is, Dean Elgar rocked up with a note-perfect tribute to Cook, whose studiously anonymous retirement last summer had precluded any official attempts to send him off in style. As if to make amends, Elgar filled his boots – in every sense – with no fuss and little flourish. Just 176 balls of nuggetty application across the best part of two sessions, as Essex’s latest left-handed ex-Test opener shifted through his gears with the same unshowy elitism that his English forebear had habitually brought to bear. And, just as had been the case in Essex’s opening-week victory at Trent Bridge, Elgar’s sidekick throughout an innings-defining third-wicket stand of 159 was an up-and-coming England prospect with the same weight and range of stroke as the recently departed Dan Lawrence. Between them, Elgar and Jordan Cox set about convincing an impressive first-day crowd of 2,226 that nothing whatsoever has changed about Essex’s red-ball batting prowess. A scoreline of 421 for 6, capped by an unbeaten century from Matt Critchley, amply backed up that pretence. It wasn’t all plain sailing for Essex after Tom Westley had won a handy toss on the first genuinely shirt-sleeves day of the season. In keeping with the uneven challenge that this month’s two-round experiment with the Kookaburra ball has created, Kent’s seamers caused havoc for precisely 21 balls. In that time, Westley himself was caught behind for 5 off George Garrett, after Feroz Khushi – whose use of an improperly sized bat at Trent Bridge still threatens his side’s top-of-the-table status – chose not to use it at all this week in being bowled by Wes Agar while shouldering arms first-ball.That double-whammy brought Cox out to face his former team-mates at an awkward 10 for 2 – and given his pointed pre-season remarks about Kent’s lack of red-ball ambition, the stage was set for him to be served a large dollop of schadenfreude. Instead, Cox’s opening gambit was a volley of extraordinarily poised drives down the ground – three fours and a three as Garrett strained for swing – and as he marched to 15 from his first six balls, it was as if all threat off the pitch or through the air had been dragged away with him.Jordan Cox made a free-flowing fifty against his former team-mates•Andrew Miller/ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Cox’s confidence on the front foot was ample excuse for Elgar to step up his own intent with a series of compact drives of his own, but it was the introduction of Matt Parkinson’s legspin that kicked Essex’s innings into overdrive. Cox greeted his first-ball full-toss with a dismissive slap through the covers – the first of three fours in a 13-run first over – and he was scarcely allowed to settle thereafter in leaking 25 runs in his first three.Having romped to his fifty from 61 balls, a chance came and went for Cox when Agar at fine leg fumbled a top-edged pull off Nathan Gilchrist, but he had added only seven more runs when Garrett pushed a touch fuller to pin him on the knee-roll for 67. It was hardly the harbinger of a Kent fightback, however. Critchley emerged with a platform of 169 for 3 but just as importantly the Kookaburra entering its dead-zone in the 39th over, and Essex duly punched along at a rate of 4.5 an over, with scarcely a need to over-reach themselves.Elgar’s departure came as something of a surprise when, on 120, he popped a tame catch to short midwicket off Parkinson and dropped his bat in frustration at his own missed opportunity, but that merely unleashed the long levers of “Tall” Paul Walter, who bombed the long-off boundary with a four and two increasingly weighty sixes before scuffing a third attempt to give Parkinson his second wicket.Michael Pepper, too, peppered the boundary, including with a full-faced lift for six over the cover rope, only to pick out deep third with an attempted ramp, one short of his fifty. Critchley, however, made no such error in carrying Essex past the second new ball and through to the close, with the promise of plenty more where these first-day offerings had come from. The only truly duff note for Essex had come before play, when Sam Cook – their Kookaburra-proofed seamer whose ten-wicket haul had routed Nottinghamshire in the first round – was ruled out of contention. Not, it should be said, in protest at the wrong Cook getting the honour of an End named after him, but as a precaution after feeling a thigh strain.

Central Sparks seal Finals Day berth with last-ball thriller against Thunder

Freeborn, Jones secure qualification as Seren Smale’s 88 goes in vain for Thunder

ECB Reporters Network14-Jun-2024Central Sparks 150 for 2 (Freeborn 71*, Jones 67*) beat Thunder 146 for 6 (Smale 88, Potts 2-18) by eight wicketsCentral Sparks sealed their Charlotte Edwards Cup qualification with a thrilling last-ball eight-wicket victory over Thunder at Edgbaston.Put in, Thunder totalled a solid 146 for six thanks to a high-class maiden T20 half-century by Seren Smale who struck 88 not out from 61 balls. The 19-year-old reached the crease with Thunder in a tangle at three for two but rescued them with a polished innings which included nine fours. Grace Potts led the Sparks bowling with two for 18.Sparks then started slowly but from 22 for two were powered to victory by an unbroken third -wicket stand of 128 between Abi Freeborn (71, 57) and Amy Jones (67, 45). Jones struck the last two balls of the 20th over for four to kill off Thunder’s challenge both in this game and the quest for qualification. With Eve Jones ruled out by concussion, Sparks were skippered by Georgia Davis who won the toss, chose to field and saw both opening bowlers strike in their first over. Fi Morris fell second bowl when she missed with a bizarre slog at Potts. Katie Mack left her leg stump exposed, sweeping at Charis Pavely to leave Thunder three for two after two overs. It should have been six for three when Smale edged Potts between wicketkeeper and slip but neither claimed the catch. They were heavily punished for their indecision. Smale and Emma Lamb (25, 28) added 61 in 51 balls and, after Lamb chipped Davis to mid-off, Threlkeld joined the youngster in a stand of 58 in 41. The captain played very much the supporting role as Smale smoothed to her half-century in 41 balls.Throwing the bat late on, Threlkeld holed out off Katie George and Sophie Ecclestone was superbly caught by a diving Davina Perrin at backward point. Smale’s domination of the innings showed in the boundary count – she struck nine while her team-mates together hit just three.Thunder started strongly with the ball as Kate Cross lured Ami Campbell into sending up a skier in the first over and Tara Norris conceded just a single from the second.Ecclestone spun her first ball past Perrin to have her neatly stumped by Threlkeld but Freeborn and Jones rebuilt methodically. Neither were at their most fluent at first but they kept their side in the race, Freeborn passing 50 in 35 balls and Jones in 37, to leave 26 needed from the last three overs. That came down to ten off the last over, bowled by Phoebe Graham and five from the last two balls. Jones hoisted the first of those over mid off for four and the second to the cover boundary to send Sparks through to Finals Day.

Hampshire stumble in small chase as Notts sense opportunity

Visitors five down and still 85 from victory after Pennington, Paterson rock top order

ECB Reporters Network19-May-2024Hampshire’s opportunity to notch a first win of the season is in the balance after a fast-moving third day of their Vitality County Championship match at Trent Bridge left them with still much work to do.Chasing a modest 169 to win, Hampshire ended the day still 85 runs away from their target at 84 for 5 and probably a man short unless Tom Prest can bat with the injured shoulder that has kept him off the field since tea on day one.Nottinghamshire had been bowled out for 209 in their second innings by tea, with veteran quick Kyle Abbott and offspinner Felix Organ taking three wickets each after Joe Clarke and Jack Haynes had made half-centuries.But Hampshire then slumped to 44 for 5 as Dillon Pennington and Dane Paterson led a determined effort with the ball by the home side before Fletcha Middleton and James Fuller saw out the final overs to calm their nerves.Still eight runs behind at 33 for 1 overnight, Nottinghamshire stumbled into early trouble as the pattern of the first two innings repeated itself.Against a ball that was only 15 overs old, they lost wickets in each of Abbott’s opening three overs. Will Young edged to wicketkeeper Ben Brown from a ball that lifted and left him, Ben Slater was pushed back in his crease to be leg before and Tom Moores saw his off stump uprooted by one angled in from wide by the veteran South African seamer. At 44 for 4 – effectively 3 for 4 – Nottinghamshire were in a difficult spot that could have turned worse still had Clarke not been dropped on 17 at 65 for 4. It was Michael Neser at first slip – substitute for the injured Prest – whose hands let him down, a second such error of the match by the Australian and a fifth for Hampshire overall.Clarke punished the mistake by passing fifty for the fourth time this season as he and Haynes added 96 for the fifth wicket before the former was out for 57, gloving a catch to Brown after being tempted by a short delivery from Mohammad Abbas.Haynes completed his half-century from 111 balls, but against the spin combination of Liam Dawson and Organ on a three-day old pitch Nottinghamshire’s hopes of building a substantial lead unravelled.Organ struck the first blow as Haynes was caught at short leg via an inside edge on to pad, picking up a second when Lyndon James, trying to help one round the corner, gave an easy catch to short fine leg.Dawson then claimed two in consecutive overs as Olly Stone’s paddle sweep looped up gently for James Vince to catch running across from slip before Dillon Pennington was trapped leg before. Organ wrapped things up by having Calvin Harrison stumped, leaving Hampshire needing 169 to win. With Nick Gubbins missing the match on paternity leave and Prest unlikely to bat, it was never likely to be a straightforward task against the Nottinghamshire attack, even with 127 overs at their disposal.Knowing the potency of the new ball so far in this contest, Hampshire made no attempt to hurry yet still found themselves two down for 15 inside the first 10 overs, thanks to two superlative catches.Nottinghamshire captain Haseeb Hameed took the first, plucking the ball out of the air one-handed at mid-on as Ali Orr mistimed his shot horribly against Pennington, who picked up his second wicket soon afterwards. This time Harrison produced the athleticism, using every inch of his 6ft 4ins plus a fully extended right arm to grab the ball a good eight feet off the ground. Organ, the man out, had aimed a rather wild slash at a ball wide of off stump but was nonplussed nonetheless that it had not cleared the cordon. It was enough for Nottinghamshire to sense an opportunity and they took full advantage of Hampshire’s frailty.Skipper Vince, on whom much seemed to rest, fell for 6, leg before to a full delivery from Paterson that he was trying to work to leg, Dawson hit James straight into the hands of short cover and Brown lost his off stump to a swinging delivery from Paterson, leaving Hampshire 44 for 5 and facing a fight for survival.

'Been whispering in his ears' – Powell is trying to get Narine to play T20 World Cup

Powell: ‘Tried to take down KKR’s main bowler Narine’

Is Sunil Narine being coaxed into coming out of international retirement for the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and USA that follows IPL 2024?Three nights ago, Narine, who had announced his international retirement in November 2023, was certain he’d be watching the tournament from home. But on Tuesday night, after hitting a magnificent century to power Kolkata Knight Riders to 223 for 6, Narine gave an inkling of that stance changing.”It is what it is, but let’s see what the future holds,” Narine, said after the match, when asked if he’d reconsider his decision to retire.Related

After the match, Rovman Powell, West Indies’ T20I captain, revealed he’d been trying to change Narine’s mind through every channel possible.”For the last 12 months, I’ve been whispering in his (Narine’s) ears, but he’s blocked out everyone,” Powell said when asked about trying to convince Narine to reverse his decision. “I’ve asked [Kieron] Pollard, [Dwayne] Bravo, [Nicholas] Pooran. Hopefully, before they select the team, they can crack his code.”Powell himself was a key contributor to Rajasthan Royals’ chase, hitting 26 off 13 balls. He came into his own in the 17th over, when he took apart Narine for a four and two back-to-back sixes in a 16-run over that left Royals needing 46 off the last three. They eventually got home off the last delivery when Jos Buttler, who struck his second century of the competition, heaved Varun Chakravarthy into the leg side with the scores level.Powell was one of Royals’ big-ticket auction signings at INR 7.4 crore, but opportunities have been limited. “The morale in the team is very good, even when I am not playing the communication has been very good and as an international player, I really appreciate when the communication is precise and clear,” he said. “The guys are in good space and long may that continue.”Powell was also asked tongue-in-cheek if he’d been whispering into Kumar Sangakkara’s [director of cricket] ear about a batting promotion.”I told them, ‘hey, I bat at No. 4 or 5 for West Indies and if you think West Indies is a good T20 side, then you can push me up the order,” he said with a smile. “We have got a few days off now and I will keep ringing it in their (the management) ears.”Powell likened the emotions at the end to that of a roller-coaster ride as Royals pulled off IPL’s highest successful chase. He also revealed he went out to bat with not set plans of taking down spin, and was merely reacting to the situation.”The emotions are all over the place at the moment,” he said. “I didn’t plan to take on Sunil, I knew he’s their best bowler, but when it comes down to 80 off 30, you have to take your chances. I backed my strengths, took my chances and came off today.”

> Veja classificação e simulador do Paulistão-2023 clicando aqui

Hoje, é o time a ser batido, logo, é o time que todos vão esperar o melhor, sempre.

Newcastle make contact with agents of "extremely dominant" £50m top target

Newcastle United are believed to have made contact with the representatives of an “extremely dominant” Premier League player, according to a new transfer update.

Newcastle eyeing signings after EFL Cup win

Magpies supporters are still basking in the glory of last weekend’s EFL Cup final win over Liverpool, in what was a special day for the club. It is important that Eddie Howe’s side don’t take their eye off the ball in the league, though, sealing Champions League football and then signing some top-quality players in the summer.

Villarreal winger Yeremy Pino is one player who has been linked with a move to Newcastle at the end of the season, with the 22-year-old bagging four assists in La Liga so far this season.

Villarreal winger Yeremi Pino.

Sporting CP ace Francisco Trincao is another rumoured transfer target for the Magpies, as Howe looks to add proven quality to his squad. The Portuguese has registered 19 goal contributions (eight goals and 11 assists) in 26 Primeira Liga outings in 2024/25, outlining his quality.

Centre-back also has to be a big area of focus for Newcastle, with AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori backed to move to St James’ Park, as he eyes a potential return to England.

Newcastle make contact with "dominant" ace's agents

According to a new update from TEAMtalk, Newcastle have made contact with Bournemouth centre-back Dean Huijsen’s agents over a move to the club this summer.

The Spaniard is seen as the Magpies’ top target in the next transfer window, but given how highly rated he is, there is plenty of interest in him from some other huge clubs. It is Champions League holders Real Madrid who are thought to be in pole position to snap him up, which is a concern.

Bournemouth's DeanHuijsencelebrates after the match

Huijsen is among the most promising young centre-backs in Europe currently, so the idea of him in a Newcastle shirt next season is a mouthwatering prospect.

The 19-year-old has performed with such maturity in an impressive Bournemouth team throughout the campaign, averaging 5.5 clearances per game across 23 Premier League appearances, while football talent scout Jacek Kulig has hailed his “extremely dominant” nature in the air.

As mentioned, at least one new central defender is needed at Newcastle before the start of the new campaign, with the likes of Fabian Schar and Dan Burn both now in their 30s.

£67m release clause: Newcastle now working on deal to sign "unique" winger

He’s a rising star…

ByTom Cunningham Mar 20, 2025

In Huijsen, the Magpies could have the perfect option to come in and not only be a key man from the off, but also grow into one of the best players in the world in his position as the years pass, making this one to watch.

Man Utd battling to sign £34m "1v1 specialist" who's impressed INEOS scouts

Turning their attention towards a future star, Manchester United are now reportedly battling to sign a young winger in the summer transfer window who’s already impressed their scouts.

Man Utd transfer news

With cost-cutting measures continuing and Ruben Amorim’s side sitting in the bottom half of the Premier League as the season nears its conclusion, Manchester United were left frustrated once again when Real Sociedad equalised to rescue a draw in their Europa League first leg.

Scoring from the spot through Mikel Oyarzabal thanks to what the referee deemed to be a handball from Bruno Fernandes, the Spaniards will now travel to Old Trafford with it all to play for.

In many ways, a Europa League exit at the last 16 stage would encapsulate Manchester United’s season in its entirety, but Amorim will be desperate to avoid yet more disappointment in the first months of his tenure.

With every game, it’s become clearer and clearer that the Red Devils need affordable reinforcements, which has seemingly seen them turn their attention towards a future star.

Man Utd can ditch Dalot for 18-year-old who's "banging" on Amorim's door

Man Utd could have another Carrington gem on their hands

According to The Boot Room, Manchester United are now battling to sign Roger Fernandes from SC Braga, who value their 19-year-old winger at €40m (£34m) this summer. The rising star has already impressed United’s scouts and could now be on the move.

As ever when it comes to a talent of such calibre though, Manchester United aren’t alone in the race to secure Fernandes’ signature. Reports have also linked Manchester City, Liverpool and Newcastle United with moves to sign the Braga teenager in what could deal those at Old Trafford a frustrating blow.

Roger Fernandes for SC Braga.

Set to miss out on Champions League football in a season which has only seen their stock fall even further, convincing Fernandes to ditch the likes of Liverpool in favour of Amorim’s project has become increasingly difficult in the current campaign.

"Specialist" Fernandes is one to watch

Whether there’s doubts over Manchester United’s ability to sign such talents in their current state, the Red Devils are certainly looking in the right direction. Fernandes has been on the rise since 15 years old and hasn’t looked like slowing down ever since.

Now 19 years old, the winger has scored five goals and assisted another five in all competitions for Braga this season. Earning the praise of Ben Mattinson as a result of his recent rise, the analyst described Fernandes as a “1v1 specialist” and dubbed him an “unselfish winger” back in January of last year.

When the summer arrives, it looks as though the teenager is likely to find himself at the centre of a Premier League battle, as the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool all jostle for his signature.
