Tamim's highs, and a first for Bangladesh

Stats highlights from Bangladesh’s convincing 90-run win against Sri Lanka in Dambulla

S Rajesh25-Mar-20175 Wins for Bangladesh in 39 ODIs against Sri Lanka – they have lost 33 while one was washed out. However, this is their first win when batting first; their previous four victories had all come in chases. This is also their second win against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka, after the three-wicket triumph in Pallekele in 2013.324/5 Bangladesh’s total, their third-highest in ODIs, and their best away from home. Their two higher totals – 329 and 326 – have both come against Pakistan in Mirpur. This is their tenth 300-plus total, but their first in an away game against a higher-ranked team.90 The margin of victory, in terms of runs. Only once have they beaten one of the top eight teams by a larger margin, when they beat West Indies by 160 runs in Khulna in 2012.127 Tamim Iqbal’s score, the seventh-highest in ODIs for Bangladesh. Tamim features five times in the top eight ODI scores for Bangladesh.144 The partnership between Tamim and Shakib Al Hasan, which is Bangladesh’s fourth-best for the fourth wicket in all ODIs, and their best for any wicket against Sri Lanka. In fact, this is only their second century stand in ODIs against Sri Lanka: the previous one came almost 13 years ago in Colombo, when Manjural Islam Rana and Mohammad Ashraful added exactly 100 for the fifth wicket.14/8 Bangladesh’s win-loss record in ODIs since the 2015 World Cup, with five wins in seven series. Among teams which have played at least 20 ODIs during this period, only South Africa and England have a better win-loss ratio.9.25 Lahiru Kumara’s economy rate – he leaked 74 in eight overs. It is the worst economy rate for any bowler who has bowled eight or more overs in an ODI against Bangladesh. The previous worst was 8.50, by Mitchell McClenaghan, who went for 68 in eight.

QPR now in "advanced talks" over signing "talented" Premier League player

da 888casino: Queens Park Rangers are now in “advanced talks” over signing a “talented” Premier League player, having now reached an agreement on personal terms, according to reporter Ben Jacobs.

Rs keen to strengthen in midfield

da poker: With Tottenham Hotspur’s Yang Min-Hyeok completing a loan move until the end of the season yesterday, QPR may feel they have suitable strength in depth in wide areas, given how highly the South Korean is rated by CEO Christian Nourry.

After completing the deal to sign the young winger, Nourry said: “I am pleased to welcome Min-Hyeok to QPR and to provide him with the opportunity to experience English football for the first time.

“Min-Hyeok had been identified by some of the most elite clubs prior to his arrival at Tottenham as a world-leading attacking prospect.”

QPR now chasing "brilliant" forward who's scored two Champions League goals

Marti Cifuentes is keen to strengthen his attack before the January transfer window closes.

    ByDominic Lund Jan 22, 2025

Now, the Rs may turn their attentions to strengthening in other areas, and they have been pursuing new options in the middle of the park, having recently been linked with a move for Hull City’s Xavier Simons.

Simons is a more defensive option, but Cifuentes is also keen on bringing in a more advanced player, having recently identified a versatile option.

Last week, the Hoops made contact over a deal to sign Chelsea attacking midfielder Harvey Vale, who is capable of playing in multiple positions, but has been unable to force his way into first-team contention at Stamford Bridge since returning from a loan spell with Bristol Rovers.

There has since been a promising new update on the Rs’ pursuit of Vale, with reporter Ben Jacobs taking to X to confirm they have made an offer to sign the midfielder, and he has agreed personal terms on a move to Loftus Road.

QPR are now in “advanced talks” with Chelsea to discuss the complexities of a deal, currently discussing bonus payments and a potential sell-on clause.

BBC Sport journalist Nizaar Kinsella has also corroborated the rumours, stating the west Londoners are leading the race for the startlet, despite interest from other unnamed Championship clubs.

Vale could thrive in the Championship

The 21-year-old has been limited to reserve football this season, but he was a key player for Bristol Rovers in League One last term, making 39 appearances in League One, registering two goals and five assists.

Cifuentes’ side still have an outside chance of making a play-off push, given that they are six points off the top six, and Vale’s performances for the Gas indicate he could make an instant impact at Loftus Road.

Having proven himself in the third tier, the “talented” youngster could now be ready to make the step-up to the Championship, so it is promising that QPR are now close to securing a deal.

Carlos upgrade: Aston Villa chasing "one of the best in the world" for £21m

After conceding three goals during their latest Premier League defeat, Aston Villa manager Unai Emery knows what position needs bolstered during the winter transfer window.

With Tyrone Mings and Diego Carlos both turning 32 by the end of the season, bringing in another centre-back is top of the manager’s wish list heading into January.

    Tyrone Mings

Recent reports indicate that Emery has already set his sights on bringing in a new signing…

As reported by Caught Offside earlier this week, PSG defender Milan Skriniar is set to be put up for sale by the French club next month, with 11 clubs battling it out to secure his signature.

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

A price tag of €35m (£29m) has been set for the player, but this figure could be reduced to around €25m (£21m) as per the report.

European heavyweights Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Real Madrid, AS Roma and Bayer Leverkusen are also interested in Skriniar, meaning Villa face some stiff competition.

If they managed to pull off the signing, the Slovakian would be an ideal upgrade for Carlos, no doubt about that.

Milan Skriniar can be an upgrade on Diego Carlos

Carlos has started just 13 games throughout the 2024/25 campaign, failing to really impress during his time on the pitch.

    Diego Carlos for Aston Villa

In the Premier League, the Brazilian has lost possession 7.2 times per game, while winning only 45% of his ground duels along with committing one foul per game.

Emery needs some quality in this area and a move for Skriniar could see Carlos moved on in January and this would be the best move for all parties.

The Slovak centre-back has spent the previous seven seasons playing for two of the biggest teams in Europe – Inter Milan and PSG.

Winner of both the French and Italian domestic leagues along with a handful of cups, Skriniar has that winning mentality that Emery requires to lead his defence.

During Euro 2020, Swedish player Albin Ekdal heaped praise on the defender before the clash between the two nations, lauding him as “one of the best in the world”:

This season hasn’t been the most productive, however, making just five appearances in all competitions, slipping down the pecking order in the French capital.

Despite this limited game time, Skriniar has shone on the field. Not only has he won 61% of his total duels contested, but the centre-back has lost possession just 3.6 times per game while averaging a 97% pass success rate in Ligue 1.

Imagine how impressive he could be if he was given a regular starting berth in Emery’s Villa side. Especially considering his solid displays for the French side, despite playing just five games.

A fee of £21m may turn into a wonderful bargain. That’s a certainty.

    Rohit Sharma's painful dismissal

Plays of the day from the second ODI between India and New Zealand in Delhi, featuring cramps, throws and blows

Alagappan Muthu20-Oct-2016Nothing but painRohit Sharma had used his backfoot cover drive to bully a reasonably good ball to the boundary. There was barely any swing. There was no reason not to try it again. At the start of the eighth over, he got in position for the shot again, but this time Trent Boult, from around the wicket, got the ball to straighten just enough to snatch the edge through to the wicketkeeper. It was a beautiful ball, but that matters little to the dismissed batsman. Less so when he suddenly cramps up. Rohit was turning back to see if the catch would be taken when he felt something in his left bicep. The arm went completely limp. He was left hunched over for several moments, clutching it, and needed the physio to tend to it before he could walk off.Avoiding painLately, umpire Bruce Oxenford has been turning up for limited-overs matches with a shield on his arm. He crosses his arms in front of his chest as he takes his stance at the bowler’s end, the shield in place to deflect the ball away from his face. It turned out that the extra protection would have served his partner well too. In the seventh over, Tom Latham drilled the ball down the ground, and fear of being hit made umpire Anil Chaudhary dash frantically to his right. He was on one foot, the other in the air, looking comically ungainly. Umesh Yadav, the bowler, was able to get a hand on the ball and send it off course. But Chaudhary gestured immediately to his partner, his elbow moving up to his face, as if he were saying, “I should get a shield too. Could have avoided pain – and looked cool to boot.”Only, when Oxenford had the chance to use the shield, he couldn’t act quickly enough. Corey Anderson’s throw from the deep at the bowler’s end headed straight at him and he was struck on the box.The Superman dive that went in vainManish Pandey seemed to have done enough to secure a couple of runs. He’d played the ball softly, placed the ball to deep midwicket’s right, and the fielder there was Mitchell Santner, who is left-handed and had to run around the ball. He did so with remarkable swiftness. Then came the throw which was brutally flat. Luke Ronchi had positioned himself between the stumps and the throw, but it came to him on the half-volley, which is hard to collect because you have to keep your eyes on the ball when there is a real chance it might bounce up and hit you. But in one fluid motion, he collected the ball and swung it back to catch Pandey short despite his full-length dive. And the fast bowler’s disdainNew Zealand were floundering in the final overs of their innings, and they could have done with some good, old-fashioned Tim Southee slogs. He had, after all, made his maiden fifty in his 100th ODI in Dharamsala. Except, in Delhi, he was bowled second ball by a superb yorker from Jasprit Bumrah. It was quick. It cramped the batsman for room. And it hit the base of off stump. The second innings provided opportunity for round two. And this time, the game was at stake. It was the final over. India needed 10 to win. New Zealand needed a wicket. Bumrah was given the strike in the third ball and Southee revved up. The ball curved into the right-hander at pace, sank below the bat and crashed into middle stump to seal New Zealand’s victory.

AJ Tye signs for Northamptonshire for T20 Blast in 2023

Australian seamer joins county after helping Perth Scorchers to BBL title

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Feb-2023Andrew Tye, the Australia seamer, has signed for Northamptonshire for the 2023 T20 Blast.Tye was the stand-out performer in Durham’s Blast campaign last season, claiming 21 wickets in 10 matches, to take his overall record in the competition to 67 wickets in 48, following a previous spell at Gloucestershire between 2016 and 2019.He joins Northants off the back of his fourth BBL title, having helped Perth Scorchers overcome Brisbane Heat in last week’s final. In the course of that match, he picked up his 300th T20 wicket in just his 211th match, surpassing the previous record set by Rashid Khan (213 games).”I’m very excited to be joining Northamptonshire for the Blast,” Tye said. “They’re a good team that’s had success in the competition in the past so I’ll be hoping that we can recreate that success this year.”Tye, 36, will be reunited with his Australia team-mate Chris Lynn at Wantage Road, and has also played alongside the club’s bowling coach, Chris Liddle, during their Gloucestershire days.”I’m looking forward to joining Lynny, it’s always better to have him on your team than to try playing against him,” Tye added. “I’m excited to work with John Sadler too, I’ve heard really good things about him plus Chris Liddle and I go back to his playing days at Glos so I’m excited to see him and work together again.”Sadler, the head coach, added: “To get AJ on board is really pleasing, he’s an amazing addition and gives our team a great balance.”His experience and skill set is exactly what we needed and he knows what’s required to win games and win competitions too. He’ll be a super asset for us this season.”Northamptonshire, two-times winners of the T20 Blast in 2013 and 2016, have struggled in the competition in recent years, with a solitary quarter-final appearance in the past five editions. However, with England’s David Willey also returning to the club after his spell at Yorkshire, the captain Josh Cobb believes they will have a “world-class” core in 2023.”AJ’s got a fantastic record in T20 cricket and we were looking for someone to come in and bring real experience to the attack, someone that can bowl the tough overs in the latter part of the innings and be a banker for us at the death,” Cobb said.”Willo [David Willey] coming back is a great addition for us as an allrounder, then we’ve got Lynny [Chris Lynn] at the top of the order and AJ now with the ball. It gives us a real solid core of world class experience throughout the side.”We know we fell away last year but we played some excellent cricket in the tournament, so hopefully with these two coming in alongside Willo we can push and go one step further this summer.”

    Frenetic New Zealand, expensive Broad

Though there wasn’t much cricket on the fourth day at Headingley, New Zealand’s astonishing scoring rate ensured some interesting numbers

S Rajesh01-Jun-201553.53 BJ Watling’s average in the third innings of a Test match, which is the highest among all New Zealand batsmen who have scored at least 500 runs in the third innings. In 16 innings, Watling has scored three hundreds; among New Zealand batsmen, only Martin Crowe has scored more.4.92 New Zealand’s run rate over the entire Test, which is the highest for any team which has played at least 150 overs in a match. The next-highest is 4.60, by Australia against South Africa in Adelaide in 2012.454 New Zealand’s score in their second innings, which is their second-best in the second innings of an overseas Test. Their best was also in England, 84 years ago, when they made 469 for 9 declared at Lord’s. Four of their six best second-innings totals are in England.6.12 Stuart Broad’s economy rate of the entire Test. He followed his first-innings figures of 5 for 109 from 17.1 overs with second-innings stats of 2 for 94 from 16 overs, leaking 42 runs in three overs on the fourth morning. They are the third-most expensive match figures for an England bowler who’s bowled at least 20 overs in a Test. The most expensive match figures are by his new-ball partner James Anderson, also against New Zealand, in Napier in 2008: in 24 overs, he returned figures of 1 for 153.1-9 Win-loss record at Headingley when teams have been set a fourth-innings target of 300 or more, since 1950. The only successful chase was by England against Australia in 2001, when Mark Butcher’s unbeaten 173 helped them chase down a target of 315 for the loss of just four wickets. By then, though, Australia had already wrapped up the series by winning the first three Tests. The only other successful chase of a 300-plus target was by Australia in 1948, when they made 404 for 3, with big hundreds for Arthur Morris and Don Bradman.3 Number of times England have survived more than 100 overs in the fourth innings at Headingley. The most recent instance was last year against Sri Lanka, when they batted for 116.5 overs to score 249, only to lose the Test by 100 runs with two balls remaining. The most they’ve batted in the fourth innings here is 142.1 overs, against South Africa in 1955.1-3 England’s win-loss record in their last five Tests at Headingley: they’ve lost to Sri Lanka, Australia and South Africa, but beat New Zealand by 247 runs in 2013.

Sky Sports: £35k-p/w Man Utd player who Amorim is happy with may now leave

A Manchester United player who Ruben Amorim and INEOS are happy with could leave Old Trafford in 2025, according to Sky Sports.

The Red Devils are now in another new era under head coach Amorim and have made a positive start under the Portuguese coach, winning two and drawing one of their first three games.

Real Madrid talking to Man Utd about £85k-p/w ace who Amorim thinks is key

Real Madrid are keen on signing a Manchester United player who has become a key player in recent seasons.

    ByBrett Worthington Dec 2, 2024

Fans have already been seeing signs of a change in playing style under Amorim, and in the transfer market, there could also be plenty of movement in 2025.

In regards to exits, a number of players are out of contract at Old Trafford at the end of the season and will therefore be able to talk to clubs outside of England in January over a pre-contract agreement.

    Tom Heaton

As can be seen, five players on the books at Man Utd are on course to become free agents, although a new deal for Amad Diallo appears to be in the pipeline.

Unfortunately for Christian Eriksen, it looks as if his days as a Red Devils player are numbered, with Eriksen likely to leave Man Utd for free at the end of the season. Now, it looks as if another player who is still under contract for a number of years could join him in a 2025 exit.

Altay Bayindir could leave Man Utd – Sky Sports

According to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Man Utd goalkeeper Altay Bayindir could leave Old Trafford in either January or in the summer.

Despite Amorim and INEOS being “very satisfied” with the ‘keeper, Plettenberg states that Bayindir “is simply too good to be a number two behind Andre Onana and currently has no prospects for regular playing time”.

Bayindir arrived in Manchester from Fenerbahce for £4.3m in September 2023 following David de Gea and Dean Henderson’s Old Trafford exits.

The Turkey international has rivalled Onana since moving to Old Trafford but has found game time hard to come by, making just three appearances in all competitions.

Under contract until 2027, Bayindir has played in United’s two EFL Cup games in 2024/25, but by the looks of it, an exit in the New Year could be on the cards for the £35,000-a-week shot-stopper.

Should a permanent exit away from United materialise, it will be looked back on as a transfer to forget, with former director John Murtough previously hailing Bayindir after he signed, saying:

“Altay is an excellent addition to our squad and adds further quality to our already strong group of experienced goalkeepers. Having consistently performed at a high level in a strong European league, he has the qualities to support us in achieving our ambitions across all competitions this season and beyond.”
