Lancashire's finances in full bloom after record year in 2019

Club reports strong financial position in run-in to Covid-19 outbreak

The morning dawns bright at Old Trafford•AFP

Lancashire have reported record financial returns in the history of a first-class county for 2019.Buoyed by a raft of popular international fixtures including an Ashes Test and a World Cup match between India and Pakistan, Lancashire reported earnings before interest, taxes depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) of £7.6 million; a record figure for a county. That represents a tenfold increase since 2015. They club also reported turnover of £34 million and a net profit of £5 million. Both are club records. While those returns do not, perhaps, tell the entire story – Surrey, for example, do not report EBITDA – they do tell a tale of a club that were, before the Covid-19 crisis, enjoying a remarkable boom off the pitch at least.Following the £60 million redevelopment of Emirates Old Trafford, the club made more than £17.5 million from its international fixtures and a further £8.4 million from its conference and events activity. The Hilton Hotel, situated inside the ground, operated by the club and including 95 pitch-facing rooms, saw its average occupancy grow to 78 percent in only its second year of trading.Lancashire also oversaw an increase in Vitality Blast attendances – ticket sales were up 34 percent compared to 2018 – which included a sold-out Roses match for the sixth year in succession. They also broke their own record attendance for non-Roses matches three times in the campaign.”To generate in excess of £30 million of non-broadcast revenues is truly remarkable and, to put it in perspective, better than some Premier League Clubs,” Lancashire Chief Executive, Daniel Gidney, said. “These results are a record for published accounts, excluding minority interests and legacies, for any first-class county and make this a proud day for the Red Rose. 2019 was a landmark year for the club when years of investment in talent and the infrastructure of Emirates Old Trafford was rewarded and truly reflected in our financial results.”During the year, Lancashire also arranged new long-term banking facilities with Metro Bank. In doing so, they consolidated all their existing debt, significantly extending the repayment profile and reducing the annual interest burden. For the first time since 2010 – before the stadium re-development – Lancashire returned to a positive reserves balance of £1.7 million. The club also reduced its net current liabilities position in the year from £8.7 million to £489,008.While such figures are sure to take a huge dent in 2020, the strong returns in 2019 leave Lancashire better placed than many to weather the storm.”Clearly, these are now tough times as the Club navigates its way through the current COVID-19 pandemic, but these results at least help relieve that financial burden,” Gidney continued. “Our priority now is to work with our stakeholders to find a way for cricket to return as quickly as it is safe to do so. This will help us protect future revenues as much as possible and allow us to continue to invest in our infrastructure for the benefit of our members and supporters.”

Man Utd star has seen his value plummet by £52m in just 18 months

da apostaganha: Manchester United’s 2023/24 campaign can only be described as underwhelming, with the FA Cup being the only title left to be won.

da mrbet: There are plenty of reasons for the lack of progression this season, but fingers are beginning to be pointed towards Erik ten Hag for his approach and style of play.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag after a Premier League game.

In truth, injuries have had a huge role to play in preventing the boss from fielding his best starting lineup, but those who have been given a chance, bar a handful, have failed to perform.

With that in mind, there’s one individual who has struggled to get going this season above all, with his statistics and output speaking for themselves.

What Man United actually paid for Antony

Last summer, Antony followed in the footsteps of Ten Hag by joining Man United from Ajax, but it hasn’t exactly been an easy 18 months in England for the Brazilian.

Arriving with an enormous £82m price tag on his head, the task at hand was as simple as it gets: perform extremely well or receive an endless amount of criticism.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag speaks toAntony

The winger's start to life at Old Trafford couldn’t have gone any better, scoring on his debut against Arsenal and netting in his first three Premier League starts.

However, just a few weeks later, Antony received plenty of backlash for his trademark spin in the Europa League, with pundit Robbie Savage calling the 24-year-old “embarrassing.”

As the campaign progressed, Antony’s performances became more inconsistent, to the point where his value has significantly dropped in just over a year. That's not ideal for a man on wages as high as £200k-per-year and over £10m annually.

Antony’s transfer value in 2024

After a tough first campaign, Antony was supposed to truly make the right-wing position in United’s team his own this season, especially after starring in the 3-1 pre-season win against RC Lens with a goal and an assist.

However, that certainly hasn’t been the case, with the number 21 struggling to have any real impact in attack whatsoever, failing to register a goal contribution in 21 Premier League appearances.

Antony

In fact, his only two of the campaign both came against League Two opponent Newport County in the FA Cup, and this has led to him losing his place in the side to Alejandro Garnacho.

Antony’s lack of quality and the fact he’s lost his place in the team has caused his estimated worth to plummet by £52m as per Transfermarkt, and the table below shows his value ranks compared to other first-choice right-wingers in England. it's certainly alarming viewing.

Even though he is far less valuable, plenty of the United faithful are calling for Antony to be moved on in the summer, but Ten Hag has still stuck by the attacker, saying:

“He has a big potential. He hasn’t shown it lately, but I know what his talent is. It is about proving his talent. It is about him.”

Man Utd's teenage Saka replica could be the star to replace Antony

The exciting prospect has already made his mark on the first team.

ByTom Lever Mar 6, 2024

In truth, Antony’s future as a Man United player is completely up in the air, and that’s the case for lots of players due to the arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe. But one thing is certain: the Red Devils massively overpaid for the Brazilian.

Fabrizio Romano shares more bad news on the injury front from Liverpool

da heads bet: In the latest stop on Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool farewell tour, the Reds found themselves at Wembley up against Chelsea for the third time in the German's tenure. And like those two previous occasions, neither side could get the job done in the full 90. Instead, the stage was set for Virgil van Dijk to become the late hero in extra time. But that's not to say that the Carabao Cup final didn't issue Klopp another frustrating blow.

Liverpool injury news

da 888: Ever since Klopp announced that this would be his final season in charge at Anfield, the Reds have suffered injury after injury – blows which could eventually decide just where the Premier League title ends up. Sunday's Carabao Cup final laid bare for all to see just how many injury issues those at Anfield have been forced to deal with, as academy stars Bobby Clark, James McConnell and Jayden Danns were thrust into the action when Liverpool had no one else to turn to.

Ryan Gravenberch

What's more, Conor Bradley was also forced to play in Mohamed Salah's usual role when Ryan Gravenberch came off injured in the first half. Klopp decided to bring Harvey Elliott into midfield, substitute Joe Gomez into the right-back role and then deploy Bradley into the more attacking position down the right-hand side.

Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch.

It was a dilemma that the Reds may be forced to solve once again too. As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Klopp confirmed that Ryan Gravenberch is expected to miss the next two games.

Without yet another midfielder for games against Southampton in the FA Cup and then Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, Liverpool must once again find a way to battle to victory.

How Liverpool could replace "complete" Gravenberch

Gravenberch's injury comes at a frustrating time not only for Klopp but the player, himself, having regained some form in recent weeks. Now, however, for the next two games at least, Liverpool must turn to Elliott once again to step into midfield and get the job done, whilst hoping that Salah makes his return from injury in the frontline.

If it is not Elliott who steps up, then it wouldn't be a great surprise to see the likes of Clark and McConnell called upon in the FA Cup against Southampton after their Wembley heroics. It's some ask to replace a player of Gravenberch's ability when at his best though, and Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders was quick to remind everyone of that ability earlier this season.

FSG chiefs have “strong relationship” with “unbelievable” Liverpool target

Liverpool owners FSG reportedly have a "strong relationship" with an "unbelievable" transfer target, according to an update from journalist Ben Jacobs.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds are still basking in the glory of their EFL Cup triumph over Chelsea on Sunday afternoon, as a young side sealed glory at Wembley in memorable fashion.

Away from the on-field action, however, work is no doubt going on surrounding new signings in the summer transfer window, with Liverpool's next manager wanting to bring in players who can suit his style of play.

One individual who has emerged as a shock candidate for the Reds is Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite, with a move to Anfield something that would not go down well at all among Blues supporters. He is seen as an alternative to fellow target Goncalo Inacio.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi is also being looked at as a potential option in defence, and the England international could come in as a direct replacement for Joel Matip, who is likely to leave when his contract expires at the end of the season.

FSG have "very strong relationship" with Leeds sensation

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jacobs claimed that FSG have a "strong relationship" with Leeds star and Liverpool target Archie Gray, even though he may remain at Elland Road for the time being due to a desire to develop his career organically.

Leeds ace Archie Gray.

"Some members of Liverpool's hierarchy have a very strong relationship with the Gray family. But it is clear, within that family, that the development of Archie Gray needs to be a patient one. The feeling from the player and the family is that Leeds is the right place for him at this moment in time. If anybody comes in for him in the summer, they're going to have to give a clear pathway and potentially find a short-term solution for minutes through a loan.

"It's unlikely, if Gray signs for a club like Liverpool in the summer, that he would be getting regular minutes. I think the player knows that and, at this stage, he is only really thinking about Leeds."

Gray has been linked with a move to Liverpool in the recent past, and this update adds real encouragement that a switch could happen in the future, even if that isn't as soon as this summer.

At just 17 years of age, the Leeds starlet has a huge future in the game, and he has been a big part of an impressive season at Elland Road to date, starting 30 of his side's Championship matches and helping them sit second in the Championship.

Ali Maxwell of the Not The Top 20 podcast has called Gray "unbelievable", and his ability to play at right-back and in midfield draws instant comparisons with Liverpool superstar Trent Alexander-Arnold, with 22 appearances coming in the former in 2023/24.

ByZak Anderton Feb 25, 2024

The long-term potential that the Englishman possesses means the Reds should do all they can to sign him, and the fact that FSG's relationship with him and his family is healthy can only be a good thing.

CSA to launch inquiry after Cobras miss transformation target

They fielded only two Black African players instead of three, and have provided a written explanation to CSA

Cricket South Africa (CSA) will launch an inquiry into the Cobras’ team selection, which saw them miss their transformation target in the ongoing four-day, first-class fixture against the Warriors at home. The Cobras took to the field with two black African players, Thando Ntini and Tladi Bokako, one short of CSA’s requirement of three black African players. However, they met the overall target for players of colour, with a total of seven. The Cobras confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that they provided a written explanation of their team composition to CSA, which has been received. The franchise opted not to make any comments at this stage. CSA, meanwhile, said it will consider the matter in the coming days.”CSA has noted the submission by Western Cape Cricket (Western Cape Cricket) in lieu of a request for a deviation from the administrative conditions. CSA will launch a further enquiry into this incident and will consider all the related and relevant information in order to arrive at a decision about the strength and the validity of the argument by WCC,” Thamie Mthembu, CSA’s head of communications told ESPNcricinfo. The inquiry is expected to be complete within 14 days. All the other five franchises fielded the required number of black African players. This is the second time Western Province have found themselves in hot water with CSA in as many months. In September, CSA suspended the Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) board and placed it under administration citing concerns over financial and governance issues. WPCA has since taken CSA to court, challenging this decision. The matter is ongoing.

Adil Rashid ruled out for the season with shoulder injury

Legspinner managed shoulder complaint throughout World Cup campaign, and will undergo a period of rehabilitation before England’s T20I series in New Zealand

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Aug-2019Adil Rashid, England’s World Cup-winning legspinner, has been ruled out for the rest of the season as his shoulder injury continues to plague him.Rashid’s shoulder injury was first made public when England’s World Cup squad was announced, and was cited as a reason for the inclusion of Liam Dawson over Joe Denly. It was not sufficiently serious that it caused him to miss any World Cup games, but Rashid revealed that he had needed an injection to manage the pain, and said that bowling his variations in particular had hurt.He declared himself “100% fit” after the group stages, but after a brief period of rest, told Yorkshire’s medical staff that the injury was “the worst it has been this summer”, and withdrew from their Vitality Blast squads.Rashid will undergo a period of rehabilitation, and hopes to bit fully fit in time for England’s T20I series in New Zealand in November. An ECB spokesman said that Rashid was suffering from “chronic pain” and added: “We believe intense rehabilitation and rest will be sufficient over the next six to seven weeks. He might need further treatment ahead of the winter if this persists. That will be decided in due course.””The aim was to come back after the World Cup and play for Yorkshire,” Rashid said. “I enjoy playing for Yorkshire, but it just wasn’t meant to be. I’ve had a shoulder problem for a little while and I got through the World Cup with an injection. Obviously, as time has gone on the injection has worn out and, after the World Cup, I started feeling a bit of a pinch in my shoulder.”These things can happen and fortunately it hasn’t happened to me earlier than it has. I’ve played 13-14 years of professional cricket and this is the first time I’ve suffered an injury to my shoulder.”I’m very confident, after being ruled out for the rest of the season, that I can get myself fully fit before we go away in the winter. I’ve got two months now to get myself fully fit and it’s as simple as that.”Rashid’s withdrawal from Yorkshire’s squads caused eyebrows to be raised, with his contract up at the end of the season, and director of cricket Martyn Moxon telling the there was “no guarantee” Rashid would play red-ball cricket for the club this season. He had opted out of first-class cricket last year, only to change his mind after being recalled to England’s Test squad.Yorkshire have subsequently re-signed South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj as cover, who will be available for the rest of the Blast, as well as Championship games against Nottinghamshire and Somerset. But Rashid quashed any idea that he might not be motivated to turn out for the county. “When I can play, I’ll play,” he said. “I just wasn’t anywhere near fit enough to play. People may have other views, but I just can’t play. Any other talk is nonsense. I enjoy playing cricket and enjoy playing for Yorkshire, but this year it wasn’t possible with how the shoulder was.”

Leeds: Why Gelhardt must start v Arsenal

Leeds United are back in Premier League action later this afternoon as they make the trip to the capital to face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Jesse Marsch’s men head into kick-off only two points clear of Everton, who play Leicester City at the same time, and the relegation zone but the Yorkshire outfit can be buoyed by the fact that they have only lost to league leaders Manchester City across their last six outings.

That was last time out, where the Whites were thrashed 4-0 at Elland Road, though the Gunners will be no easy task as they are fighting it out with their arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur for a place inside the top four.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title=”Read the latest Leeds United news and rumours!”]

A victory for the visitors would also see them move three points clear of relegation rivals Burnley and that would seriously bolster their chances of survival with just five games to go after this weekend.

Marsch could also boost their safety bid by unleashing young striker Joe Gelhardt from the off down in north London today.

Leeds have rued the absence of last season’s top goalscorer Patrick Bamford (17) for the majority of the campaign but it’s been evident that the likes of Rodrigo and club-record signing Daniel James are not up to scratch as out-and-out central strikers.

The 20-year-old, however, could be a big threat against a side that hasn’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last six outings – and he has already proven himself against some of the best teams in this division.

For example, against Wednesday’s opposition – Chelsea – he scored his first professional goal for the club as he bullied his way past their backline in the game’s dying stages. He then scored the crucial winner in injury time against rock-bottom Norwich City.

Gelhardt has certainly caught the eye already, with Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp describing him as a “human wrecking ball,” he said:

“He’s like a human wrecking ball. I like him, he’s really exciting. He’s fast, he’s aggressive, he gets on the ball, he takes people on. Once he gets into the box, he loves it. That’s where he can do most of his damage.”

Meanwhile, according to The Athletic’s Phil Hay, he has been “banging on the door”, whilst LeedsLive reporter Beren Cross believes he looks “absolutely outrageous” and is a big talent indeed.

Arsenal have struggled to keep out the opposition since March 19th, conceding three goals to Crystal Palace, two to Brighton & Hove Albion and two to Chelsea in the last six games.

It’s clear that Gelhardt possesses the sort of skill set and ability to do serious damage to Mikel Arteta’s men, but it’s on Marsch to unleash him down in the capital this afternoon.

Forget James or Rodrigo, it’s the young striking sensation who must feature in the starting XI today. As a result, his presence could seriously bolster their survival bid.

AND in other news, Marsch dealt another setback ahead of Arsenal clash…

Celtic star was “set to” leave, now he could be the new Tierney under Nancy

Celtic manager Wilfried Nancy has his work cut out for him at Parkhead after a frustrating first match in charge of the club against Hearts in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.

A 2-1 defeat to the league leaders proved that the Frenchman has plenty of issues to solve and plenty still to learn about the squad of players that he has at his disposal.

The former Columbus Crew head coach has a big group of players to work with in Glasgow, and there are a number of stars who he should give an opportunity to in the coming weeks.

The rarely-seen Celtic stars Nancy should unleash

Kelechi Iheanacho, for example, was an unused substitute against Hearts after returning from injury, and he should be given a chance to lead the line after Daizen Maeda missed two ‘big chances’, per Sofascore, on Sunday.

The Nigerian centre-forward has scored three goals in eight appearances in all competitions for the Scottish giants this season, per Sofascore, and could emerge as Nancy’s first-choice number nine.

Another rarely-seen star who could benefit from the change in shape to a 3-4-2-1 could be Dane Murray, who has started two league games this season, as he is a naturally right-sided centre-back who can provide balance when playing out from the back.

Auston Trusty played in that role on Sunday, as a left-footed player, and was slow to bring the ball forward and progress the play, as he was on his weaker side, which could open the door for Murray to come in and take that spot.

Colby Donovan was also snubbed in Nancy’s first game, playing zero minutes, but he could emerge as the manager’s own Kieran Tierney in the right wing-back position, having been set to leave in the summer window.

Wilfried Nancy is brewing the next Tierney

The 19-year-old academy graduate was “set to join Dundee on loan for the season”, per journalist Josh McCafferty, in the summer transfer window, before an injury to Alistair Johnston meant that he was needed as a first-team option at Parkhead.

    First Impressions

What did pundits and fans alike think about their new star signing when they arrived? Football FanCast’s ‘First Impressions’ series has everything you need.

Donovan has gone on to play 716 minutes across 12 appearances for the first-team, per Sofascore, since the decision was made to keep him at the club, instead of sending him out on loan, and he has shown real promise.

The Scotland U21 international is looking to follow in Kieran Tierney’s footsteps in Glasgow, as the left-back came through the academy to provide a big threat down the left flank as an attacking full-back.

In his first spell with the club, as shown in the graphic above, the Scotland international provided an eye-catching 37 assists in 170 matches for the club, and Donovan has the potential to provide a similar threat in this new system.

Hyun-jun Yang started at right wing-back against Hearts. However, Nancy could move him over to the left and unleash the academy graduate on the right to provide crosses on that side.

Donovan, as shown in the statistics above, has stood out as one of the most impressive creative right-backs in the Premiership this season under Brendan Rodgers and Martin O’Neill, whilst playing as a right-back.

Playing as a wing-back under Nancy would give him even more opportunities to push forward and show off his creativity in the final third, which could improve his output as a creator and make him a Tierney-esque threat on the right-hand side.

Whilst Johnston is still to return from his injury eventually, unleashing Donovan in this new role could provide him with a chance to nail down a regular starting spot in the team to become the next academy graduate to become a star at Parkhead, like Tierney.

His emergence in the first-team this season, after being set to go out on loan in the summer, is perhaps a lesson that Celtic can learn from, as they could give more opportunities to their academy players to see if they have what it takes to play for the senior side before letting them move on, permanently or on loan.

Worse than Yang: Nancy must bin 3/10 Celtic dud who once had "the X factor"

This Celtic star who had “the X Factor” should be ruthlessly dropped from the starting line-up on Thursday.
