Fin Bean shows he's capable of grace as well as grind for Yorkshire

Yorkshire 130 for 4 (Bean 42, Williams 2-22) trail Lancashire 276 (Jennings 119, Wells 84, Hill 6-26) by 146 runsFew games are so wonderfully enriched by their past as cricket yet few should be more wary of being enchained by it. It is a tricky path to tread. Before the rain-delayed start to our cricket at 12.55 this afternoon, a memorial was dedicated to Peter Eckersley, who skippered Lancashire to the title in 1930 and 1934. Eckersley once piloted an aircraft containing his team to an away match in Cardiff and most of the photographs of him also feature either a plane or a posh car. One can imagine him as a suspect in an Agatha Christie whodunit.Shortly after this ceremony ended, play began, a couple of hours late, and Lancashire lost their last two wickets for the addition of only four runs. Ten minutes later, 20-year-old Fin Bean, who made a quadruple century for the second team in June, walked out to play his maiden innings in first-class cricket. Bean was unlikely to know it and there was scant reason for him to care, but of all the buildings that encircled this sacred field two decades ago, only the pavilion remains and even that is now overshadowed by a hotel and a corporate hospitality venue. The blare of the present, the imperative of now, is everywhere. And yet Peter Eckersley lived just as vividly as Fin Bean lives. Understanding such things is a triumph of historical imagination and a very necessary one in these months of notions and nostrums. So in the midst of confusions about cricket’s role and direction it was pleasant to be reminded of a few of our game’s verities this afternoon. One of these is the intensity of the Roses match, something into which Bean was inducted this afternoon as he scored just one run from his first 27 balls. Patiently, he left some balls alone; steadfastly, he tapped others back to the bowler. Then he stroked an on-drive and a cover-drive to the boundary off Will Williams and we realised here was a left-hander capable of grace as well as grind.Related

By then, Adam Lyth had gone, caught at short leg by Josh Bohannon off Williams for 13, and it was plain that Yorkshire’s under-strength top-order was vulnerable to a Lancashire new-ball attack led by Tom Bailey, one of county cricket’s quiet masters. But Bean resisted Bailey and Williams, even though, as he admitted later, the ball was “nipping around a bit”. In company with George Hill, who might still have been in slight shock after his 6 for 26 yesterday, Bean put on 63 for Yorkshire’s second wicket. At times the cricket was a trifle slow but these things are relative.Certainly it was furlongs removed from the drawn game at Old Trafford exactly a century ago when play was possible on only two days out of three and 504 runs were scored in 252.3 overs. These, though, are not the most intriguing features of that match. 20,000 spectators watched Lancashire compile 118 all out from 77.3 overs on the Saturday of the August Bank Holiday weekend and 10,000 saw Yorkshire bat out for a draw on the following Tuesday when the visitors needed only eight runs from five overs to win but finished three short with eight wickets down, Wilfred Rhodes making an unbeaten 48. Effectively, however, Yorkshire were nine down; their skipper, Geoffrey Wilson, was in hospital with appendicitis. Even more significantly, perhaps, Yorkshire were on course for the first of what would be four successive titles and were content to remain top of the pile while denying Lancashire any chance of overhauling them. Will Williams took two wickets for Lancashire•Getty Images

A hundred years later, it is Lancashire who are chasing the title, albeit a little distantly, whereas Yorkshire fear relegation, an indignity unknown to Rhodes, Roy Kilner and those other giants. The home side’s hopes were raised a tad when Hill was bowled by a glorious leg-spinner from Matt Parkinson for 32 and lifted again when, after 153 minutes in the middle, Bean was pinned in front of his stumps by Bailey for a 116-ball 42. He will have been disappointed not to reach a half-century but he had looked as if he belonged. In its way his innings had counted for much more than his gourmandising for the second team. “This innings shows that I can play at this level, which is a big thing for a young player,” he said.Lancashire enjoyed one more success before the weather closed in. After struggling for 3 runs in 10 balls, Will Fraine was bowled by Williams when playing no shot but Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Jonny Tattersall ensured their side reached 130 for 4 before the umpires took the players off for bad light that had been gathering from the west. Ten minutes later, the rain was bucketing down.No matter… or not much anyway. Our delayed and truncated day had honoured the Roses match and Bean had taken his first steps towards the fulfilment of a dream. From the 1864 suite the blazered nobility from both counties had watched it all with the discernment that only decades in the game can bring. For once, one did not begrudge them their mighty lunches. Roses matches are their occasions, too, and that smoked salmon was never going to eat itself.

Imagine him & Amad: Man Utd pursuing £50m "menace" for Amorim

Manchester United’s season so far has been disappointing, although they have had an upturn in form since Erik ten Hag was sacked from his position.

Club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy was tasked with the role of interim manager until Ruben Amorim officially takes over on the 11th of November.

The former Red Devils striker has yet to lose in charge of the Red Devils. The Dutchman has overseen two wins and a draw so far, with one game left to play. His first game in temporary charge was a 5-2 thrashing of Leicester City in the Carabao Cup, before a 1-1 draw in the Premier League against Chelsea.

Most recently, the Red Devils beat Greek side PAOK in the Europa League, thanks to two goals from winger Amad.

Amad’s stats this season

It has been a tough season for the Ivorian winger. Despite his obvious quality, the 22-year-old has not been given much of an opportunity by either Ten Hag or Van Nistelrooy, until his start against PAOK from which he grabbed the chance with both hands.

This term, the youngster has played 15 games in all competitions, scoring three goals and registering one assist. As well as his brace against the Greek side, he also scored in the Premier League against Brighton and grabbed an assist against Southampton.

Prior to Thursday’s night win, he had been named on the bench in six successive games, despite an initially encouraging start to the campaign.

It is certainly strange that the Red Devils number 16 has only played 700 minutes of football all season, especially given the start to the season that he had.

Following his exploits against PAOK, football statistician Statman Dave explained that he has created 18 chances in all competitions, which is more than any United winger. That is even more remarkable given the minutes he has been given.

It certainly seems like Amad has done enough to earn a start in United’s next outing, and likely for the foreseeable future, too. In fact the Red Devils have been linked with a striker who could make the 22-year-old even better.

United’s striker target

The player in question here is RB Leipzig and Slovenia striker Benjamin Sesko. According to a report from Christian Falk earlier this week, the Red Devils will compete with German giants Bayern Munich for his signature. He could cost upwards of £50m, a price GiveMeSport believe Arsenal were quoted by the Bundesliga side.

RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko

It has been a superb start to the season for the 21-year-old centre-forward. He has played 14 times so far this term, scoring seven goals and grabbing three assists. He has been in fine form in the Champions League in particular. Sesko has three goals in four games, scoring against Atletico Madrid and two against Juventus.

His shooting stats on FBref show just how deadly the Leipzig number 30 is in front of goal. Over the past 365 days, the 21-year-old averages 0.23 goals per shot and 1.47 shots on target each game. That ranks him in the top 8% and 15% respectively amongst strikers in Europe’s big five leagues.

The striker, who was described as a “menace” by football scout Antonio Mango, could form a deadly partnership with Amad. Sesko’s stats prove that it does not take him much to score, with a good number of his shots finding the back of the net.

Combine that with Amad’s impressive ability to create chances, both from in and around the penalty box and from deeper crossing positions, and United could have a match made in heaven. The 6 foot 4 striker could have a field day on the end of some of Amad’s passes.

United have struggled for goals this term, and have scored nine times in the Premier League, the third worst in the competition. Unleashing the young Ivorian would certainly help this, but getting a marksman as deadly as Sesko into the side could elevate this even more.

Benjamin Sesko scores for Slovenia

Should United get the deal over the line, a £50m investment could be a bargain if the Slovenian attacker can develop a frightening partnership with United’s talented winger, and help Amorim’s new side climb the Premier League table quickly.

The report claims that one member of Ruben Amorim's backroom team was 'particularly scathing' about Hojlund's blunt display in the 1-0 defeat at Tottenham earlier in the month. However, the coaches are also said to be trying to encourage the forward in training in a bid to get him firing again. Hojlund's last goal came in the 2-1 victory at Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League on December 12.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

United's travelling supporters cheered the substitution of Hojlund at Goodison Park with 20 minutes still to play. That was partly due to excitement around seeing 17-year-old Obi in action after his goal-scoring feats for the U18s although the MEN claimed that there was also a sense that the fans were showing their displeasure at Hojlund.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MAN UTD?

Hojlund will be hoping to end his long run without scoring when United meet relegation-fighting Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on Wednesday. The match could also determine whether or not the Red Devils get sucked into an unthinkable battle against relegation themselves, as they are 13 points above Ipswich with 12 games left of the season. Defeat would see the gap reduced to 10 points.

After Fire won the toss and chose to field, Spirit opener Rossington produced the early pyrotechnics with a flurry of boundaries off Dwaine Pretorius and David Payne. 49ers send Leeds officials to join race to sign "exciting" £5m sensation

da dobrowin: Not looking to miss out on a rising star, the 49ers Enterprises have now reportedly sent Leeds United officials to join the race in pursuit of a rising star in Scottish football, who has attracted plenty of interest as of late.

Leeds transfer news

da casino: Leeds know all about trying to keep hold of a future star, of course, having failed to prevent Archie Gray’s exit to Tottenham Hotspur in a summer full of exits a few months ago. Now, they’ll want to flip the script and land a young sensation of their own in the transfer market.

Those at Elland Road are in a strong position to convince reinforcements too, given that they now sit top of the Championship in the early race for title glory and subsequent promotion.

When the January transfer window arrives, the Yorkshire club have the opportunity to welcome the additions that could all but seal promotion to the Premier League, before then turning their attention towards future stars for Daniel Farke’s side.

According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, the 49ers have now sent Leeds officials to join the race for Lennon Miller, who has been priced at a minimum £5m by Motherwell as they look to at least benefit from the Scottish sensation’s potential exit.

Leeds have made an "unbelievable signing" who could be sold for big money

The Leeds United ace has already broken records during his short stint at Elland Road.

Those at Elland Road aren’t the only ones interested, however. In fact, a whole host of English clubs are reportedly chasing Miller’s signature, including Manchester United, Newcastle United, Liverpool and Championship rivals Sunderland. With that said, it could be an impressive coup if Leeds managed to welcome the 18-year-old midfielder.

A player who may make up for Gray’s exit, Leeds should go all out to sign Miller if they’re given the opportunity when 2025 arrives.

"Exciting" Miller could make up for Gray's departure

Injuries to midfielders Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev caused quite the headache for Farke, although Ao Tanaka and Joe Rothwell have been brilliant in their absence. A situation which highlighted Leeds’ lack of depth in the middle of the park at the time, Miller’s arrival wouldn’t just be one for the future.

The teenager has starred in Motherwell’s senior side this season, reaching four goals and four assists to prove that he no longer belongs in academy football. Now, he looks destined for his biggest move yet.

As a result of his continued rise over the last year or so, Miller has attracted plenty of interest and praise, with most of that coming from Motherwell boss Stuart Kettlewell, who told reporters as relayed by The Herald earlier this year: “I just think he is a really exciting talent. If he was playing at one of the other clubs I would be waxing lyrical about him as well because I do get excited when you see really good footballers in Scotland.

“It’s brilliant for us all to market and sell the product and the brand in this country. I am absolutely delighted that I feel we have got one of the top guys at his age and somebody that I believe can go on and have a real, real good future in the game.”

They appeared to be well on course to achieve that when taking a 2-0 lead in a semi-final date with Peterborough, but conceded a stoppage-time equaliser to send the game to a penalty shootout. Paul Mullin and Elliot Lee missed from the spot, allowing the Posh to continue the defence of their EFL Trophy crown.

  • WHAT PHIL PARKINSON SAID

Disappointed Red Dragons boss Parkinson told reporters afterwards: “We've thrown away a chance to go to Wembley as far as I'm concerned. We were comfortable in the game, 2-0 up and made a lot of changes, I thought the lads did well.

“Two really poor goals to concede. Moments in the game of concentration and seeing the game through, particularly the second one. From a game which looked so comfortable for us, to end up not going to Wembley is very difficult to take for us all, but we've got no one else to blame but ourselves.”

While silverware has fallen out of reach for Wrexham, they remain in the hunt for automatic promotion and can now focus all of their efforts on getting across that line. Parkinson added: “We've said before every round that the league is our number one priority, and it always has been, but when you get so close, we want to finish the job off. We've done well in this tournament throughout this season, but now we've got to focus on the league and learn.”

Arsenal could hire amazing Edu replacement who achieved an unbeaten season

Good news, that’s all Arsenal fans wanted, right? This has been a challenging start to the new season and the Gunners are not where they wanted to be at all.

This wasn’t in the script. After two close runs, challenging Manchester City right until the very end, they have fallen behind in 2024/25. Defeats to Bournemouth and Newcastle sandwiched a 2-2 draw with Liverpool that has left them five points behind the Citizens and seven points behind the Reds.

At least Arsenal have the foundations in place at the top of the club to improve. Well, so we thought, anyway.

Far gone are the days of Raul Sanllehi and a lack of transparency from Stan Kroenke. In that regard, the North Londoners are far more organised.

Former club CEO Vinai Venkatesham had done a sterling job with Stan and his son Josh Kroenke, who is seen a great deal more in the public eye. However, since he was thrust more into the limelight there has been a greater sense of clarity at board level.

That has been furthered by the appointment of Mikel Arteta who has been brilliant since being hired by KSE. The same can be said of Edu Gaspar, the club’s Sporting Director who has played a huge hand in transfers and contracts behind the scenes. Sadly, he could be on his way out.

Why Edu has left Arsenal

Surprising news emerged on Monday morning that Edu was set to leave Arsenal.

The story came courtesy of Sami Mokbel of the Daily Mail who reported that ‘Arteta is to lose a key ally’.

One of football’s leading sporting directors, the news has been described as a ‘major blow’ to Arsenal with the Brazilian having performed some excellent work over the last few years.

He was the man who backed Arteta when he wanted to get rid of Pierre-Emerick Aubayemang, he was key in the arrivals of players like Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard and has been excellent at negotiating new contracts for some of the club’s key performers, notably Bukayo Saka and William Saliba over the last 18 months.

So, why has he left? Well, according to the Athletic’s David Ornstein, he is exiting for a role across Evangelos Marinakis’ clubs.

Marinakis owns Nottingham Forest, Olympiacos and Portuguese side Rio Ave with Edu set to take up a position where he’ll have more control than he did at the Emirates.

Edu's most expensive Arsenal signings

Arsenal's potential Edu replacement

Little is known with regard to who could replace Edu at this moment in time but this news will likely have sent shockwaves through the football club.

A number of the game’s best Sporting Directors are already taken with the infamous Monchi working with Unai Emery at Aston Villa, Monaco’s former transfer chief Paul Mitchell now at Newcastle and Dan Ashworth – formerly of Brighton – now at Manchester United.

Aston Villa's president of football operations, Monchi.

So, who could they turn to? Well, Bayer Leverkusen’s Simon Rolfes is one name who should be on their shortlist when the time comes to replace Edu.

Together with Xabi Alonso, he has cultivated a phenomenal side in Germany. Alonso gained most of the plaudits but Rolfes was the mastermind behind a project that saw Leverkusen win the Bundesliga unbeaten, reach the Europa League final and win the DFB-Pokal, the German equivalent of the FA Cup.

What makes him such an interesting proposition for Arsenal? Well, there are certainly a few shared beliefs and ideologies.

Although the Gunners have made some mega-money signings over the last few years, there is one key theme; to sign players who are yet to reach their prime.

Some of Edu’s key transfers included William Saliba, the aforementioned Odegaard and more recently young faces like Riccardo Calafiori and Jurrien Timber. That has been a key strategy and one Rolfes has actually replicated at Leverkusen.

As you can see – Edu has very rarely signed players in their prime (typically between 26-30), and instead has preferred the model of buying young and turning players into potential superstars with the help of Arteta.

That strategy has been employed at the BayArena too, notably when Kai Havertz – a “remarkable” talent in the eyes of Rolfes – left Leverkusen for Chelsea. Who did they look at entrusting? Florian Wirtz. He was just 16 at the time but has now become a genuine star, scoring 18 and registering 20 assists last term.

Since becoming Sporting Director at Leverkusen, the average age of Rolfes’ transfer dealings has been just 22.8, even younger than Edu’s average but that clearly hasn’t stopped them from having plenty of success.

Just look at some of the names below; they have recruited exceptionally well. Clearly, Rolfes’ talent ID is phenomenal and that bodes particularly well if Arsenal want to look at him to replace Edu.

Spotting talent isn’t just about players, however, it’s also about coaches. The 42-year-old has triumphed in this area too. He took the gamble of hiring a young Alonso, as Edu did with Arteta and it’s certainly paid off. It’s safe to say the former midfielder hasn’t got a lot wrong since taking on his job at Bayer.

Like Edu, he’s also capable of keeping his best talent at the club. There will come a day when the likes of Alonso and Wirtz do depart but the fact he was able to convince them to remain in Germany after their unbeaten season speaks volumes.

Rolfes is a man who knows what he’s doing, he can spot talent, he listens to what the manager wants and needs, and executes plans superbly well. At 42, he may not have huge experience but the experience he does have is invaluable.

Sky Sports: £35k-p/w Man Utd player who Amorim is happy with may now leave

A Manchester United player who Ruben Amorim and INEOS are happy with could leave Old Trafford in 2025, according to Sky Sports.

Players who may leave Man Utd in 2025

The Red Devils are now in another new era under head coach Amorim and have made a positive start under the Portuguese coach, winning two and drawing one of their first three games.

Real Madrid talking to Man Utd about £85k-p/w ace who Amorim thinks is key

Real Madrid are keen on signing a Manchester United player who has become a key player in recent seasons.

ByBrett Worthington Dec 2, 2024

Fans have already been seeing signs of a change in playing style under Amorim, and in the transfer market, there could also be plenty of movement in 2025.

In regards to exits, a number of players are out of contract at Old Trafford at the end of the season and will therefore be able to talk to clubs outside of England in January over a pre-contract agreement.

As can be seen, five players on the books at Man Utd are on course to become free agents, although a new deal for Amad Diallo appears to be in the pipeline.

Unfortunately for Christian Eriksen, it looks as if his days as a Red Devils player are numbered, with Eriksen likely to leave Man Utd for free at the end of the season. Now, it looks as if another player who is still under contract for a number of years could join him in a 2025 exit.

Altay Bayindir could leave Man Utd – Sky Sports

According to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Man Utd goalkeeper Altay Bayindir could leave Old Trafford in either January or in the summer.

Despite Amorim and INEOS being “very satisfied” with the ‘keeper, Plettenberg states that Bayindir “is simply too good to be a number two behind Andre Onana and currently has no prospects for regular playing time”.

Bayindir arrived in Manchester from Fenerbahce for £4.3m in September 2023 following David de Gea and Dean Henderson’s Old Trafford exits.

The Turkey international has rivalled Onana since moving to Old Trafford but has found game time hard to come by, making just three appearances in all competitions.

Under contract until 2027, Bayindir has played in United’s two EFL Cup games in 2024/25, but by the looks of it, an exit in the New Year could be on the cards for the £35,000-a-week shot-stopper.

Should a permanent exit away from United materialise, it will be looked back on as a transfer to forget, with former director John Murtough previously hailing Bayindir after he signed, saying:

“Altay is an excellent addition to our squad and adds further quality to our already strong group of experienced goalkeepers. Having consistently performed at a high level in a strong European league, he has the qualities to support us in achieving our ambitions across all competitions this season and beyond.”
