Durham 425 for 9 dec (Bedingham 118, Raine 71, Lees 70, Gibbon 4-92) and 242 for 4 dec (Borthwick 108*, Bedingham 86) beat Worcestershire 366 for 5 dec (Haynes 134, Potts 3-110) and 192 (D’Oliveira 42, Haynes 40, Kuhnemann 5-53) by 121 runsMatthew Kuhnemann claimed a five-wicket haul to guide Durham to a dramatic final-day victory over Worcestershire in their LV= Insurance County Championship Division Two clash at Seat Unique Riverside.Durham coach Ryan Campbell promised that his side would not settle for a draw, and his team were as good as his word. Scott Borthwick and David Bedingham laid the foundation of the victory with a 196-run partnership in a morning onslaught as Durham’s skipper scored his first first-class century in two years. The Pears required 314 to win from 70 overs after Durham declared. However, after being reduced to 3 for 2, the visitors were in a desperate scramble to rescue a draw. Kuhnemann provided the impetus with his skillful left-arm spin, and was supported by Matthew Potts and Paul Coughlin.Adam Finch and Dillon Pennington almost combined with a late rearguard action to deny the hosts, but Kuhnemann removed the latter to secure Durham’s first win of the campaign.Beginning the final day with a 155-run lead, Borthwick and Bedingham found their rhythm and were able to accelerate the run rate. Borthwick set the tempo and reached three figures for the first time since the 2021 season, and his first hundred at the Riverside since his return to the club.Whereas Borthwick’s innings highlighted his timing and touch, Bedingham offered a brutal assault, scoring four sixes, dispatching one onto the health club balcony, in his 87-ball 86 before being caught one ball removed after being skittled by a Finch no-ball.The declaration came 20 minutes before lunch, and there was time for Potts to make inroads as Jake Libby was caught at the second attempt by Michael Jones at first slip. Ed Pollock blasted the new ball in the first innings, but there would be no repeat performance as the left-hander was well caught by a diving Ben Raine at mid-on.Worcestershire needed to calm proceedings, and it fell upon their first-innings centurion Jack Haynes and Azhar Ali to temporarily halt the Durham charge. However, both Ali and Haynes would make mistakes against Kuhnemann, and two further brilliant diving catches from Raine at deep backward square leg put the pressure squarely back on the Pears.Kuhnemann’s impressive spell continued with a beauty to bowl Gareth Roderick to open up an end for the Durham attack. Matthew Waite and Brett D’Oliveira were in a desperate battle to stem the tide. They put on 44 for the sixth wicket, but Coughlin prised out Waite earning his reward for a tight line before Joe Leach became Kuhnemann’s fourth victim for an 18-ball duck.Durham needed something special to turn a promising position into a victory. It was no surprise that it was Potts that broke the game open. He displayed his international quality by moving the ball just enough to find D’Oliveira’s outside edge. Ben Gibbon was powerless to follow his skipper back the pavilion from the next delivery as Potts put Durham on the brink.Pennington saw off the hat-trick ball, but he and Finch faced the daunting task of fending off 19 overs to see out an improbable draw. The two tailenders put up a great fight and saw out 14 of the 19 overs, but Kuhnemann turned one past Pennington to secure a 121-run win for the hosts.

Romano: Talks "taking place" over Celtic signing "special" 27 y/o player

da aposte e ganhe: Celtic are now in negotiations over the signing of a “special” player in the January transfer window, according to an update from renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Latest Celtic news

da 888casino: The Hoops are still stinging after their 3-0 defeat away to Rangers on Thursday, in what was surely their most disappointing Scottish Premiership outing of the season to date. Brendan Rodgers’ side were never at the races at Ibrox, allowing their rivals to get within 11 points of them in the title race.

There is no need for an overreaction, however, with Celtic still in an extremely dominant position, and new signings during the January window will only strengthen their chances of yet more title success, as well as shining in the Champions League.

Brendan Rodgers

One report has claimed that the Hoops could sign two players in the same position out wide, in order to pave the way for Luis Palma to leave, while young Manchester City attacking midfielder James McAtee has also been continually linked with a move to Parkhead recently.

Along with Palma, there are other Celtic players who could depart this month, with Rodgers reportedly happy to allow centre-back Stephen Welsh to move on and find a new club where he can enjoy more regular playing time. A reunion with Kieran Tierney has also been mooted and now a big update has emerged regarding their pursuit of him.

Celtic in discussions to sign "special" Tierney

Writing on X on Friday morning, Romano said that Celtic have now entered negotiations for Tierney to return to the club, potentially this month.

Seeing Tierney back with the Hoops is likely to go down extremely well with supporters, with the Scot coming in and providing great competition for Greg Taylor at left-back.

The 27-year-old’s brilliance during his first stint at Parkhead saw him earn a move to Arsenal, at which point he was deemed one of the most impressive full-backs in Britain. Mikel Arteta was certainly delighted when he snapped him up, saying:

“I am really looking forward to working with him and giving him the opportunity to play. His attitude, his commitment, his willingness it’s incredible. I think he’s going to bring something special to us.”

Sadly for Tierney, he has struggled to match the hype, rarely being a key starter during Arsenal’s resurgence in recent seasons, but for that reason, he surely loves the idea of returning to Celtic.

83% duels lost: Rodgers must instantly drop "very clumsy" Celtic star

The Celtic head coach should drop the forward from the starting line-up this weekend.

ByDan Emery Jan 3, 2025

At 27, he still has so much to offer in his career, and if he can enjoy another four or five years in a Hoops shirt, he could cement legendary status at the club, having already won five league titles at Parkhead.

AJ Tye signs for Northamptonshire for T20 Blast in 2023

Australian seamer joins county after helping Perth Scorchers to BBL title

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Feb-2023Andrew Tye, the Australia seamer, has signed for Northamptonshire for the 2023 T20 Blast.Tye was the stand-out performer in Durham’s Blast campaign last season, claiming 21 wickets in 10 matches, to take his overall record in the competition to 67 wickets in 48, following a previous spell at Gloucestershire between 2016 and 2019.He joins Northants off the back of his fourth BBL title, having helped Perth Scorchers overcome Brisbane Heat in last week’s final. In the course of that match, he picked up his 300th T20 wicket in just his 211th match, surpassing the previous record set by Rashid Khan (213 games).”I’m very excited to be joining Northamptonshire for the Blast,” Tye said. “They’re a good team that’s had success in the competition in the past so I’ll be hoping that we can recreate that success this year.”Tye, 36, will be reunited with his Australia team-mate Chris Lynn at Wantage Road, and has also played alongside the club’s bowling coach, Chris Liddle, during their Gloucestershire days.”I’m looking forward to joining Lynny, it’s always better to have him on your team than to try playing against him,” Tye added. “I’m excited to work with John Sadler too, I’ve heard really good things about him plus Chris Liddle and I go back to his playing days at Glos so I’m excited to see him and work together again.”Sadler, the head coach, added: “To get AJ on board is really pleasing, he’s an amazing addition and gives our team a great balance.”His experience and skill set is exactly what we needed and he knows what’s required to win games and win competitions too. He’ll be a super asset for us this season.”Northamptonshire, two-times winners of the T20 Blast in 2013 and 2016, have struggled in the competition in recent years, with a solitary quarter-final appearance in the past five editions. However, with England’s David Willey also returning to the club after his spell at Yorkshire, the captain Josh Cobb believes they will have a “world-class” core in 2023.”AJ’s got a fantastic record in T20 cricket and we were looking for someone to come in and bring real experience to the attack, someone that can bowl the tough overs in the latter part of the innings and be a banker for us at the death,” Cobb said.”Willo [David Willey] coming back is a great addition for us as an allrounder, then we’ve got Lynny [Chris Lynn] at the top of the order and AJ now with the ball. It gives us a real solid core of world class experience throughout the side.”We know we fell away last year but we played some excellent cricket in the tournament, so hopefully with these two coming in alongside Willo we can push and go one step further this summer.”

Crystal Palace could sign immediate upgrade on Esse all for £25m

Crystal Palace have struggled to score goals this campaign, scoring 25 goals in 22 games so far this season, making them the joint fifth-lowest goalscorers in the Premier League.

This is despite taking 13.9 shots per game (10th most in the division) with their average xG per shot being 0.12.

With their striker options being Jean Philippe Mateta and Eddie Nketiah -who was a big-money signing in the summer – the Eagles could instead look to add goals to their squad behind the striker, aiming to replace the output of Michael Olise who left in the summer window.

Crystal Palace looking at new forwards

According to reports from Italian outlet Firenze Viola in recent days, Crystal Palace have emerged as potential suitors for Botafogo winger, Luiz Henrique.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Other interested clubs include Fiorentina, who made an offer of around €20m (£16.8m) to Botafogo, but the Brazilian side have not been convinced by this bid.

The reports suggest a fee of around €30m (£25m) would be needed to prise the 24-year-old winger away from the club in the January window. However, it is unknown whether Palace would be willing to meet such an asking price.

Henrique has made 55 appearances since joining Botafogo in 2024, scoring 12 goals and providing six assists.

How Henrique compares to Romain Esse

On Saturday it was confirmed by the Eagles that they had officially signed Romain Esse from Championship side Millwall.

He has made 26 appearances so far this season, scoring five goals, providing one assist and totaling 2,165 minutes played.

Esse is, of course, five years younger than Henrique, and would demand a lower fee, but you would also be gambling on him making the jump from Championship to Premier League football seamlessly. That being said, Henrique has played in LaLiga and the Brazilian Serie A, so he would also be making a change and could potentially struggle with the physicality to begin with.

When comparing the two wide player’s metrics this season, Henrique has much better output, both with goals and assists. However, Esse has shown his ability to create chances for his team, with a higher xAG (expected assisted goals) which could lead to his assist numbers being higher when surrounded by better finishers.

Henrique and Esse both average 1.21 key passes per 90, as well as over three shot-creating actions per 90, showing their ability to create chances. The 24-year-old (Henrique) does offer more potency and goal threat though, having a higher shot-volume to go alongside his higher goals per 90.

Crystal Palace star Michael Olise

The Brazilian was labeled an “absolute sensation” by scout Jacek Kulig, when playing for Brazil in the World Cup qualifiers. The quality of Henrique is clearly huge, but the biggest challenge would be settling into one of/if not the most physical league in the world.

The aim for either one of these players if they both arrived this January would be to replace some of the assets that Palace lost in the summer, specially when one of their jewels in the crown, Michael Olise, left the club. Both players have elements to their game, adding attacking spark, but whether they can provide enough output straight away remains to be seen.

Sri Lanka smell the coffee

Plays of the day from the fourth ODI of the series between England and Sri Lanka

Alan Gardner29-Jun-2016The foot race
Sri Lanka had clearly resolved to try and push England a bit harder on a ground known for high scores but good intentions were no match for Jonny Bairstow’s quick reactions in the second over. Danushka Gunathilaka dropped the ball down into the covers and immediately called his partner, Kusal Perera, through for one. Bairstow was far quicker off the mark – though Perera’s running line was slightly obstructed by the bowler, Chris Woakes – and his scampering underarm throw caught the batsman inches short. Perera, who has been run out four times in his last 10 ODI innings, might have stood a better chance with a dive. The finger stinger
England chose to include two spinners, despite the poor forecast and a pitch that had sweated under covers, and it was hard not to have sympathy with Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali as they hugged themselves in the field and waited for the call. There was little for them in a true batting surface, either, but Moeen did get some heat into his fingertips when Gunathilaka drove uppishly back to the bowler’s right. Moeen threw himself low to try and take a one-handed catch but the ball burst through his fingers and away – probably leaving his bowling hand feeling even more numb. The statement six(es)
With a solid platform from which to attack England from at last, Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews came out swinging. Both smeared Moeen over deep midwicket, Mathews with a particularly brutal swipe into the crowd; but Chandimal upped the stakes a couple of overs later when he took on Liam Plunkett, giving the charge to an 86mph delivery and driving back over the bowler’s head and into the second tier of the pavilion. Not content with making Plunkett look like a medium-pace trundler, he then jumped across to uppercut a short ball over third man to go to his half-century with another six.The scoop
Mathews’s hitting during the closing stages ensured his side would soar beyond 300 for the first time in the series, particularly when he helped himself to 14 off the penultimate over, bowled by Plunkett. That included a sequence of three consecutive fours and it was one of his more deft strokes that stood out, as he contorted his body to flip a full, fast attempted yorker from around off stump clean over short fine leg, much to Plunkett’s chagrin. The assault
Jason Roy is the sort of opener who forces bowlers to wake up and smell the coffee whether they like it or not. He was well into his stride, having reached 50 from 39 balls, when Nuwan Pradeep began his fifth over. Pradeep began with a leg-side wide – although there was a suspicion Roy might have got a tiny edge on it – and was then subjected to a disdainful barrage of 6-4-4. The first was a crashing blow over long-on; the second dispatched through the covers with a fluid drive; the third clipped smartly off his pads as he walked across to make use of Pradeep’s change of line. Up came the England hundred and a sense of the momentum shifting. The stunner
Gunathilaka had already made his third ODI fifty and picked up the second wicket of his short career when he latched on to what must surely be his best catch in a Sri Lanka shirt. Eoin Morgan connected well with a slash off Suranga Lakmal that looked set to give third man a test when a flying Gunathilaka intercepted it one-handed leaping to his right at backward point. Sri Lanka’s catching has not been perfect on this tour but Gunathilaka’s celebration in the direction of the dressing room suggested he has not been shirking. The final word
Roy’s hundred on his home ground was met with a rousing reception, as the crowd rose for a player much appreciated in these parts. Whether he took Chandimal’s effort at endangering spectators in the pavilion as a personal challenge is unknown but the clean strike over the sightscreen off Seekkuge Prasanna in the 25th over, the ball ricocheting off the concrete steps, was as emphatic as anything seen all night.

Two clubs move to sign £3.5m Celtic player who Hoops don’t want to sell

Two clubs have made a move to sign a £2.5 million Celtic player who the Hoops don’t want to sell this month, according to a Sky Sports reporter.

Celtic transfer news

The Hoops will be looking to continue their assault on the Scottish Premiership and the Champions League in the second half of the season. Therefore, Brendan Rodgers may want to make a few changes to his squad this month to improve their chances of success.

Celtic closing in on agreement for "great" goalkeeper to rival Schmeichel

He could be allowed to leave his current club.

2 ByTom Cunningham Jan 4, 2025

The Scottish champions look to be closing in on the signing of defender Kieran Tierney. It has been reported by Fabrizio Romano that negotiations have now begun in terms of Celtic re-signing Tierney. The left-back is out of contract at the end of this season, but talks are underway for an agreement to be reached this month, with Tierney keen on a move back to Celtic Park.

As well as looking to sign Tierney this month, it has also been reported that Celtic are closing in on the signing of Altay Bayindir from Manchester United. The Turkish international is currently the second-choice goalkeeper at Old Trafford, behind Andre Onana, and with him keen on playing more minutes, a move could be on the cards this month, as United look to freshen up their goalkeeper department and Celtic look to replace the ageing Kasper Schmeichel.

Two clubs move to sign £3.5m Celtic player

As Rodgers and co have their eyes on arrivals, they may also have to be prepared for one or two departures, as according to Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph, Genoa and Olympiacos have expressed an interest in Celtic winger Luis Palma.

The 24-year-old joined the Hoops in August 2023 for a reported £3.5 million, and it was an impressive first season at the club for the Honduras international, as he scored six goals and registered nine assists in 24 Scottish Premiership games.

Palma, who can operate anywhere across the frontline, has struggled to have the same impact in this 2024/25 season, as he’s hardly featured under Rodgers. Palma has started just two of the eight games he has played in all competitions, starting just one game in the league, and that came against Dundee in October.

Joseph now reports that Genoa and Olympiacos have made a move to sign Palma from Celtic this month. Palma is under contract until the summer of 2028, and with that, the Hoops are not interested in letting the forward leave, especially as James Forrest is still out with an injury. The Scottish champions are in the market for a new winger, and should one arrive, that may change their stance on Palma.

Rizwan admits he 'didn't deserve to play in NZ series'

The PCB’s controversial decision to drop Mohammad Rizwan for Sarfaraz Ahmed for the two-Test series against New Zealand was among the biggest talking points throughout the series. Rizwan, however, said he felt that, on current form, he “didn’t deserve to play” for Pakistan at the time.”You can ask the head coach Saqlain Mushtaq what I told him after the end of the England Test series,” Rizwan told in an interview. “I personally thought that since I wasn’t able to perform, I didn’t deserve to play in the next series.”In his last half dozen Tests, Rizwan had suffered a downturn in his form with the bat, scoring 262 runs in 12 innings without a half-century at an average of 21.83. That was significantly down from his career batting average (38.13), though it was believed his quality behind the stumps gave him enough protection from omission. But soon after the PCB chairman Ramiz Raja was removed in a dramatic overhaul, changes were felt on the pitch, too. Rizwan was replaced by Sarfaraz, playing his first Test match in over three years. While concerns over his wicketkeeping linger – there were a slew of dropped catches and missed stumpings across both Tests – his form with the bat was not in question. He was the highest run-scorer in the series with 335, scoring three half-centuries and a hundred on the final day of the second Test to ensure Pakistan escaped with a draw. He would go on to be named the Player of the Series.”I was happy to see Sarfaraz perform because that is what I wanted,” Rizwan said. “Sarfaraz has been performing in domestic and deserves his chance now. I asked for his inclusion. Whoever performs best for Pakistan deserves to play.”Some players said that every player goes through this phase and you can’t sit on the bench based on few failures. But I went to the coach and captain myself and told them that you can drop me because I haven’t performed. Two players are witnesses to this conversation.”This wasn’t the first time Rizwan’s benching raised eyebrows. He was famously left on the bench for much of his time at Karachi Kings, playing just seven times across his last two years with the franchise. Upon moving to Multan Sultans in 2021, he was appointed captain and led the side to their maiden PSL trophy, finishing as the second highest run-scorer in the competition.Rizwan defended his former franchise’s decision. “I was never hurt when I was benched during the PSL in the past. I thought they [Karachi Kings] were honest with the team, and it was the team’s requirement at the time to keep me on the bench.”Rizwan remains with Multan, whom he will captain for the third successive season when the PSL gets underway on February 13.

Rehan Ahmed and Peter Handscomb add further fuel to Foxes' season

Ex-Hampshire signing Tom Scriven then snaps up three wickets to leave Glamorgan floundering

ECB Reporters Network28-Apr-2023There was frustration for England sensation Rehan Ahmed and for Australian Ashes hopeful Peter Handscomb as both missed out on centuries but their combined efforts turned up the pressure on Glamorgan on day two of their LV=Insurance County Championship match at the Uptonsteel County Ground.Ahmed (90) and Handscomb (95) shared a partnership of 177 for the sixth wicket as Leicestershire punished Glamorgan skipper David Lloyd’s decision to put them in by racking up 407 all out as their encouraging start to the Division Two season continued, giving them the upper hand despite Timm van der Gugten’s six for 88.To rub salt in the wound, veteran Leicestershire seamer Chris Wright then dismissed Lloyd for a second ball duck as Glamorgan replied, and despite Eddie Byrom and Marnus Labuschagne fighting back with a partnership of 124 for the second wicket, the visitors closed still 94 runs short of avoiding the follow-on at 164 for five.Sam Northeast – back at the scene of his historic 410 not out last season – was still there on 16 after being dropped on nine. Glamorgan could do with something special from him on day three to stay in this game.Ahmed had been straight into his stride as Leicestershire began the morning session on 241 for five after rain had washed out roughly a third of the opening day’s scheduled overs, demonstrating his youthful confidence by driving Van der Gugten’s loosener through the covers for four. He picked up four more another somewhat edgily, leaving the Netherlands bowler perhaps regretting the lack of a third slip, before whacking away a short ball from Michael Neser with a shot that resembled a double-handed cross-court forehand in tennis, the resulting boundary taking him to a 70-ball half-century.Leicestershire’s intention was clearly to make the best of their opportunities as Glamorgan waited for the new ball to become available. Handscomb was somewhat more conventional in his approach but he and Ahmed proved an effective combination, adding 72 in the 13.2 overs left before the visitors could dispense with the old one.Ahmed, already an all-format England international yet playing in only his seventh first-class match, looked well set for a second first-class hundred until the new ball eventually worked in Glamorgan’s favour, Van der Gugten getting one past his bat to hit his front pad squarely in front and claim five in an innings for the 11th time.Lloyd, not at his best with the ball on day one, looked in better fettle this time, striking in his third over as Tom Scriven edged behind just before lunch, picking up a second wicket soon after the interval as Wright, in shot-making mode, was caught at deep mid-wicket. Van der Gugten made Ed Barnes his sixth victim via an edge to the wicketkeeper.Handscomb was last out, throwing back his head in frustration as umpire Neil Bainton upheld his compatriot Michael Neser’s call for another catch at the wicket, denying him a second hundred in Leicestershire colours, but his supervision of the tail had enabled his team to double their batting bonus points from two to four after Ahmed’s dismissal.Lloyd’s second-ball dismissal, caught at second slip, did not augur well for Glamorgan’s prospects, but Byrom (51) and world number one batter Labuschagne (64) batted patiently, while occasionally riding their luck, to add 124 for the second wicket. But just as it appeared the two had built a platform for a substantial reply, both were out in quick succession to Scriven, the young former Hampshire seamer bringing one back to trap the left-handed Byrom lbw. Then Barnes, who had been pulled for six by Labuschagne a couple of overs earlier, surprised him with another shortish delivery that found the edge, Wiaan Mulder at second slip grabbing the catch at the second attempt.Thereafter, the fourth-wicket pair Northeast and Kiran Carlson mounted a solid hour of defence before the contest sprang back into life in the final half-hour. Northeast was badly dropped at midwicket on nine off Ahmed but Scriven then struck with consecutive balls as Carlson, who faced 61 balls for his nine, feathered a catch behind and Billy Root lost his leg stump. A couple of fine, swinging deliveries, had given him three wickets in an innings for the first time in his fledgling career.

Huge blow for the Lionesses! Sarina Wiegman's assistant Arjan Veurink set to leave England role this summer to become Netherlands head coach

Lionesses assistant Veurink to leave England roleHas won two Euros titles with WiegmanWill take Netherlands job after Euro 2025Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Veurink has been part of the England coaching staff since Wiegman took over the team back in 2021, playing a key role in the Lionesses' triumph at the 2022 European Championships and their run to the 2023 Women's World Cup final. However, after the reigning European champions conclude their title defence in Switzerland this summer, Veurink will depart to take over the Netherlands national team.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) knows Veurink well, as he was also Wiegman's assistant when she was in charge of the Netherlands between 2017 and 2021. The two had a lot of success there as well, winning the 2017 Euros and reaching the 2019 Women's World Cup final. Prior to that, Veurink was head coach of Twente's women's team, winning seven trophies in four years despite only being 25 years old when he started in the role.

WHAT VEURINK SAID

Veurink, who has signed a contract until the end of the Euros in 2029, said: "This is not only a great challenge and a wonderful new adventure, it also feels like a logical next step in my career. I never made a secret of the fact that one day I wanted to be the manager of the Dutch national team. With over eight years of experience at the very highest level as Sarina Wiegman's right-hand man, first with the Netherlands and now in England, I am ready to stand on my own two feet. The fact that this opportunity has just arisen in the Netherlands makes it extra special. I will now first do everything possible to finish the coming months in England in style."

Nigel de Jong, the technical director of the KNVB, added: "Arjan has a rich history in women's football and has witnessed up close the developments that international women's football has gone through over the past 15 years. He knows what is demanded in the absolute top, but also knows how important it is to keep the connection with the grassroots. We are therefore delighted that he wants to take up the challenge. I am looking forward to working together and to further build on the success of the Dutch national team. Finally, we would also like to thank the English Football Association (FA) for their cooperation."

DID YOU KNOW?

Veurink will actually be an opponent of the Netherlands before he departs his role with England, as the two nations are set to face off in the group stages of this summer's Euros. Both are among the favourites to emerge victorious from the tournament, as the winners of the two previous editions.
