Harry Swindells, the unlikely hero as Leicestershire picked up their first silverware in 12 years last weekend, kept alive their hopes of a return to Division One in the LV= Insurance County Championship for the first time in 20 years on day three against Yorkshire at Grace Road.Fresh from his match-winning 117 not out in Saturday’s Metro Bank One-Day Cup final – his first List A game of the season – Swindells top-scored with 73 in his first appearance of the year in the Foxes’ red-ball team to secure a potentially valuable lead in this rain-affected match, albeit one that Yorkshire have chalked off for the loss of one wicket.Swindells shared a 10th-wicket partnership of 93 with Will Davis, who added a career-best unbeaten 44 to his 4 for 28 with the ball, as Leicestershire recovered from 140 for 9 to be bowled out for 233 in reply to Yorkshire’s 155. They had earlier been teetering at 97 for 6 as Yorkshire seamer George Hill took 4 for 69.Openers Adam Lyth and Finlay Bean continued their prolific form with their fourth 100-plus partnership of the season as Yorkshire closed 35 runs in front on 113 for 1, Bean having been bowled by Tom Scriven offering no shot. Rain and bad light cost a further 25 overs on the day.Leicestershire have two matches in which to overturn a deficit of 21 points behind second-placed Worcestershire if they are to join already-promoted Durham in Division One next season. A win in this match would be worth 19 points.Frustrated by bad light on the first evening and a complete washout on day two, it took Leicestershire only three deliveries on the third morning to snare the last Yorkshire wicket, Ben Cox taking a smart one-handed catch as Scriven dismissed Jordan Thompson to finish with 3 for 27.Yet until Swindells and Davis came together, Leicestershire looked to have wasted an opportunity to put themselves in a dominant position. On a pitch that looked no picnic to bat on, at least in the early part of the day, the home side suffered a setback two balls into their reply when Rishi Patel was given out leg before to Ben Coad despite getting forward a couple of good paces, but skipper Lewis Hill seemed determined that Coad and new-ball partner Thompson would not be calling the shots.Hill rattled off eight boundaries in the next nine overs as he and Sam Evans added 57 for the second wicket. But after his namesake George replaced Coad in the first change, Yorkshire seized the initiative. The former England Under-19 seamer’s first over conceded three of those eight boundaries, albeit one off a streaky inside edge, but he had the right-hander caught behind pushing at one in the next over and his dismissal prompted a Leicestershire collapse. From 58 for 1, they were 97 for 6 by lunch. Sam Evans and Umar Amin were leg before to Hill, the latter more convincingly than the former, before Bean caught Louis Kimber at third slip via second slip Lyth’s chest as 20-year-old Ben Cliff struck with the fourth ball of his second first-class match. In the last over of the session, Cox became the fourth batter to see umpire Neil Pratt’s finger raised as Hill claimed his fourth wicket.Scriven, on 2, was dropped twice off consecutive Coad deliveries soon after lunch, both put down by Lyth at second slip. He and Swindells appeared to steady the ship, only for three wickets in the space of seven balls to threaten to hand Yorkshire a first-innings lead. Lyth held a much more difficult catch to dismiss Scriven off Thompson, who sent Chris Wright’s off stump into a cartwheel two balls later before Cliff bowled Scott Currie.Yet it turned out Swindells was in the mood for more heroic deeds, leading an equally assertive Davis in a record 10th wicket stand for Leicestershire against Yorkshire, beating the mark of 70 set by George Geary and Alec Skelton in 1927, when the counties met at Leicestershire’s original home ground in Aylestone Road.Picking up most of his runs square of the wicket, Swindells completed a 57-ball half century containing seven fours. Davis hit seven boundaries to pass his previous best of 42 against Kent here two years ago before Swindells feathered a catch behind off Matthew Revis, with a useful 78-run lead in the bank. Both Davis and Swindells are out of contract at the end of the season and have yet to learn if they will be offered new ones.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The former Brighton and Coventry frontman is now seeing a return to English football speculated on. Having previously worked with Amorim in Portugal, a reunion for the pair at Old Trafford has been mooted.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

United are, however, languishing 14th in the Premier League table. They are into the Europa League semi-finals, where they will face Athletic Club, and ultimate glory in that competition would secure Champions League qualification for 2025-26.

    WHAT RUBEN AMORIM SAID

Amorim admits that the Red Devils need to be rubbing shoulders with the European elite in order to stand any chance of signing Gyokeres. He has said of a player that he knows well: “I didn't talk to him. But if a player only wants to come to Man United to play Champions League, then he won't come. We want players who want to represent United, not players who want to play certain competitions.”

Leroy Sane warned Bayern Munich will not improve contract offer amid new demands from Arsenal target following surprise agent switch

Sane and Bayern have been in talks over a contract extension for the Germany international, who recently suggested progress was being made before suddenly swapping his representative to Pini Zahavi. The 29-year-old will be a free agent come the end of June should he fail to pen a new deal soon.

AdvertisementAFPTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The change has derailed the contract talks, as Sane was reportedly close to an agreement with the club over a deal that would see him accept a pay cut. Now, though, his new agent is said to be demanding a massive signing bonus similar to the €20 million (£17m/$23m) they agreed to pay Alphonso Davies for his recent extension.

WHAT EBERL SAID

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl has reiterated the club's desire to reach an agreement, but says it would be wrong of Sane to change the terms of the deal.

"Our wish would be to continue. If [the financial terms] were to be exceeded it would be very difficult," he said. "There's no bad blood on my part, not even with Leroy."

He added: "We thought we were already very far along. [Increasing the demands] would not be right, otherwise it would become fashionable."

The uncertainty around Sane's situation at Bayern could see him leave the club this summer, with Arsenal said to be interested in bringing the former Manchester City player back to the Premier League.

Liverpool

Having a fully fit squad to choose from can be a major advantage in a title race, and Arne Slot is blessed to have almost all of his players available for selection, although there could be some absentees.

Defender Joe Gomez is set to miss out due to a hamstring issue, having been substituted after just 11 minutes at Plymouth and missing the draw at Everton, whereas Curtis Jones received a red card after the full-time whistle and Cody Gakpo is a fresh doubt.

Wolves

Vitor Pereira has a few injury concerns to deal with, although the only key first-team players out are strikers Jorgen Strand Larsen and Hwang Hee-Chan. Both forwards missing will leave Pereira a little light on options in attack.

Handscomb half-century helps Victoria beat Tasmania

Beau Webster’s brilliant all-round display of 83 and 2 for 17 not enough for Tasmania in a low-scoring affair

AAP and ESPNCricinfo25-Sep-2023An aggressive Peter Handscomb half-century has helped Victoria grind to a three-wicket win against Tasmania in the first round of the Marsh Cup.Chasing 225, Handscomb top-scored with 51 from 42 balls as Victoria reached 229 for 7 with 31 balls to spare despite an outstanding all-round display Tasmania’s Beau Webster, who made 83 and took 2 for 17 to give the visitors a chance.Tasmania’s top-order batters got bogged down against a disciplined Victorian attack on a tacky early season surface – all out on the last ball of their 50 overs for 224 – at the Junction Oval in Melbourne.Handscomb, along with opener Tom Rogers, deliberately avoided the same trap in their run chase. Rogers struck five fours and a six in making 45 from 49 balls and laid a solid platform. Although he fell in the 19th over, Victoria were well-placed at 110 for 3.Handscomb’s knock featured seven fours and a six before emerging 20-year-old left-hander Campbell Kellaway played a composed hand making 46 from 71. Will Sutherland sealed victory with an unbeaten cameo of 29 runs from 20 balls, including a six to finish the match.Tasmania’s Billy Stanlake and Webster were the only multiple wicket-takers, although Riley Meredith bowled a lightning spell downwind to finish with 1 for 29 from 10 overs.Earlier, the Tigers’ top-order batters struggled against some miserly seam bowling from Scott Boland and Fergus O’Neill. Boland took 2 for 30 from his 10 overs while O’Neill took 1 for 36 including a maiden.Opener Caleb Jewell was out in the fifth over, as Boland, from around the wicket, enticed an outside edge to Sutherland who completed a sharp ankle-high catch at second slip. Two balls later, in a fresh Boland over, the paceman trapped Mac Wright lbw for a duck and Jordan Silk soon followed. Jake Weatherald, opening for the Tigers for the first time since leaving South Australia, made 28 from 61 deliveries but fell to Sam Elliott.Weatherald’s dismissal left Tasmania wobbling at 72 for four in the 23rd over. Webster answered the crisis call, hitting nine fours and a six in an impressive counter-punch despite Test offspinner Todd Murphy conceding only 32 runs from his 10 wicketless overs.Webster was supported by Matthew Wade and Mitchell Owen as he lifted the Tigers to 224, helped by a late flurry from Sam Rainbird. But they were 30 to 40 runs short in the end.

Prithvi Shaw signs with Northamptonshire

India batter Prithvi Shaw has secured a deal with Northamptonshire to play the remainder of the County Cricket season in England and also be a part of the Royal London One-Day Cup which starts in August. The 23-year-old is expected to join them at the end of the Duleep Trophy.Shaw is part of a strong West Zone side which is tipped to make it all the way to the final of the Duleep Trophy scheduled between July 12 and 16. He may have fallen down the pecking order for India but remains a prolific run-scorer for his state side, Mumbai, in all formats of the game. Shaw hasn’t played any first-class cricket for six months but he did make a career-best 379 off just 383 balls in a Ranji Trophy game against Assam in January 2023.The ability to score runs quickly is a big reason for Shaw’s rise through the ranks since winning the Under-19 World Cup for India in 2018. He had a stunning introduction to Test cricket, scoring a century on debut, but has since then struggled to deal with the quality of bowling on offer in international red-ball cricket. He played his last game as a first-choice pick for India in 2020 and only managed to get back when they had to send a second-string side to Sri Lanka in 2021.Most recently, Shaw was part of the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2023. He went through a six-game stretch where he was unable to score more than 15 runs which led to his being dropped there as well. He did return later in the tournament and immediately struck a half-century.Northamptonshire play in Division One of the English County Championship. They have won just one out of seven games so far and have seven more until the end of the season. This will be Shaw’s first time playing domestic cricket in the UK. He will become the fifth Indian to be part of the 2022-23 season following Cheteshwar Pujara (Sussex), Ajinkya Rahane (Leicestershire), Arshdeep Singh (Kent) and Navdeep Saini (Worcestershire).Shaw is a very attractive package in white-ball cricket, where hitting through the line of the ball is much easier. He is approaching 3000 List A runs at an average of 52.54 and a strike-rate of 123.27 with eight centuries, one of which is a double. Former India opener Gautam Gambhir, in 2022, had even tipped him to lead the country at some point in the future.

Netherlands set sights on World Cup semi-finals

Allrounder Bas de Leede says the team has set themselves a high target at their first ODI World Cup since 2011

Shashank Kishore05-Oct-20232:33

Bas de Leede: ‘Us being here is massive for the sport back home’

Netherlands allrounder Bas de Leede is clear about his team’s targets at the World Cup.For starters, they aren’t thinking of themselves as Associates. They want to play as equals with the big boys. For de Leede, there’s no bigger motivation than that.”We want to make the semi-finals,” he announced ahead of their first game against Pakistan in Hyderabad. It may seem a fanciful dream to many, considering Netherlands haven’t played an ODI since the World Cup Qualifiers in June. They arrived in India late September for two warm-up games against Karnataka, and the nature of pitches proved a challenge. In the first game, they slumped to 3 for 8, before making 114 in pursuit of 266. In the second, they made 295 and lost by one wicket.Netherlands had both their World Cup warm-ups against Australia and India washed out; and Mitchell Starc blew away their top order in the little play that was possible. It was a reminder of what they can expect when they face Shaheen Afridi and Haris Rauf.Related

Pakistan brace for Netherlands challenge amid form, injury and off-field concerns

Several first-choice players had missed Netherlands’ glorious run at the World Cup Qualifiers to honour their English county contracts. De Leede was among those who made it to Zimbabwe thanks to Durham making letting him go play.”We obviously don’t get to play together as a team very often because guys are spread out,” he said. “But I think the learnings we can take from Karnataka was, first of all, it was nice to play together as a team and try and adapt to Indian conditions.”Obviously, it’s one thing training in Indian conditions, but then another thing going out and playing and seeing what it’s like in a game. Then you know lack of game time. It was a shame that the warm-up games got rained off. But I think in the nets, we try and replicate game scenarios and try and be as competitive as we can when bowling to each other, when facing each other.”Does the prospect of playing Full Member teams seem intimidating? Not quite. De Leede spoke of how Netherlands ran Pakistan close over three ODIs in Rotterdam last August. In the first match of that series, Netherlands nearly chased down Pakistan’s 314 but fell 16 short. In the third ODI, having restricted Pakistan to 206, they were 108 for 3 before collapsing to lose by nine runs.Bas de Leede played an important role in Netherlands qualifying for the World Cup•Albert Perez/ICC/Getty Images

“I think the experience of the whole Super League, having played against bigger nations, was fantastic for us,” de Leede said. “And obviously, Pakistan, having played them last year in Rotterdam in three ODIs, it’ll be nice to sort of be familiar with the team and the players and stuff, having played them before.”I think that will help us a little bit. But obviously, you know, they’ve evolved. They’ve gotten better. They’ve got different skills now as well, even with Shaheen [Afridi] coming back, who didn’t play that series.”Twice during the press conference, de Leede was asked to be “realistic” in terms of setting expectations.”We want to make the semi-finals,” he said both times. “If we want to get there, we’ve got to win four or five games. So, we’d have to take down one of the big teams. But that’s (semi-finals) our main target. And if we get there, we play our best cricket. Amazing. But if we play our best cricket and we don’t get there, I reckon we can still be proud of ourselves.”How will they approach their quest to make the final four? Play with a nothing-to-lose approach or set high goals and try to get there?”I think probably a mixture of both,” he said. “I don’t think any of the teams have got anything to lose. They’ve got something to gain, which is winning the World Cup. I think for us, obviously it’s special being back for the first time since 2011, but we’ve set our goal high which is making the semi-final. I don’t think if we don’t make it, we’re a failure or anything like that.”I think if we don’t make it, but we have played our best cricket, we can still be proud of ourselves. But by setting the goal to make the semi-final, I think we can probably do more than what people expect from us.”

Fabregas had been heavily linked with a move to Bayer Leverkusen after Xabi Alonso left the German side to succeed Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid. However, the former Spanish midfielder has turned down the opportunity, opting to remain at the Italian club for at least another season. Fabregas has admitted he has spoken with other clubs about taking over, but credits the atmosphere at Como as the key reason he wishes to stay.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWHAT FABREGAS SAID

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Fabregas said: "I talked to the club, we made progress, I am happy here. I want to understand if everyone wants to continue like this and they are all aligned with my ideas. I also spoke to other clubs, I am respectful and speak to everyone.

“There is to be an official announcement. I am happy, we all need to be on the same page to continue together.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Fabregas explains that he wishes to create a family-like atmosphere at the club, similar to the one he felt at Arsenal when he was breaking through into the first-team as a teenager. He believes that by helping his players develop as people, they will become better footballers too. He explained: “I was alone at Arsenal at the age of 16, so I know how you create a family. We will have a training centre here of a high level. I want to put my lads in the best possible context to create a human bond. I want a good person first and foremost, more than a good player, so I look them in the eye and want to evaluate everything.”

GOAL/GettyWHAT NEXT FOR FABREGAS?

With Serie A wrapping up next weekend, Fabregas will already be considering his squad for next year. He added that he would like to trim the size of his squad, which includes former Spurs wonderkid Dele Alli, to help create a more tight-knit group. Should Fabregas choose to keep Alli, he will be desperate to help the Englishman recapture the brilliance he once displayed in the Premier League.
