Lasith Malinga will return to Mumbai Indians for IPL 2024, this time as their fast-bowling coach. He will replace Shane Bond, who had held that position for the past nine seasons. After retiring in 2021, Malinga had joined Rajasthan Royals in 2022 as their fast-bowling coach, a position he served for two seasons. This will be Malinga’s second stint in Mumbai’s support staff, having served as their mentor in 2018. A year later, Malinga returned to the field to share the bowling duties with Jasprit Bumrah, with the pair playing a key role in Mumbai winning their fourth IPL title.Overall, Malinga won five titles with Mumbai: four IPLs (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019) and the Champions League T20 in 2011. Malinga played 139 matches for Mumbai in all, taking 195 wickets at an economy rate of 7.12. Out of those, 170 wickets came in the IPL, the joint-sixth-most in the league.Bond had joined Mumbai in 2015 and played a key role with Rohit Sharma and Mahela Jayawardene, who served as head coach from 2017 to 2022. It could not be confirmed whether Bond will continue as the head coach of MI Emirates in the ILT20, which started in January this year, where the franchise finished third on the points table in the six-team tournament before losing the second Qualifier to eventual champions Gujarat Giants.

Teams likely to have a purse of INR 100 crore to build their squads for next season
Nagraj Gollapudi26-Oct-2023The IPL player auction ahead of the 2024 season will be held on December 19 in Dubai; it is the first time the auction will be held overseas. The event will coincide with the second ODI of India’s tour of South Africa, which is scheduled for December 19 in Gqeberha. The ten IPL teams have until November 15 to submit the lists of players they are retaining and releasing, after which the auction pool will be finalised by early December. Each team will have a purse of INR 100 crore (USD 12.02 million approximately) to build their squad for the 2024 season, a INR 5 crore increase from last season’s purse of INR 95 crore. How much each team has to spend on auction day depends on the value of players they release, in addition to their unspent purse from the 2023 auction.Punjab Kings have the largest purse at present – INR 12.20 crore (USD 1.47million) – while Mumbai Indians have the smallest at INR 0.05 crore (USD 0.006 million). Of the remaining teams Sunrisers Hyderabad have INR 6.55 crore (USD 0.79 million); Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals both have INR 4.45 crore (USD 0.54 million); Lucknow Super Giants have INR 3.55 crore (USD 0.43 million); Rajasthan Royals have USD 3.35 crore (USD 0.40 million); Royal Challengers Bangalore have INR 1.75 crore (USD 0.21 million); Kolkata Knight Riders have INR 1.65 crore (USD 0.2 million); and defending champions Chennai Super Kings have INR 1.5 crore (USD 0.18 million).Despite being only a day-long event – compared to the two-day mega auction once every four years – mini auctions have produced some of the most expensive buys, especially in the overseas players category. Ahead of the 2023 season, Sam Curran became the most expensive player in IPL history when he was bought by Punjab for INR 18.5 crore in December last year.Several prominent overseas players are likely to enter the upcoming auction, including Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc who recently said he was “definitely” heading back to the IPL after an eight-year hiatus. Pat Cummins is also likely to put his name up for bidding, having skipped the IPL last year. Some of the other key players franchises expect to see at the auction are Travis Head, Chris Woakes, Alex Hales, Sam Billings, and Gerald Coetzee.
An “excellent” midfielder is now increasingly likely to join Tottenham Hotspur this summer, having put in some impressive performances in recent weeks, according to a report.
Bissouma set to be replaced as Spurs plan for the long-term
Yves Bissouma has received regular game time ever since arriving from Brighton & Hove Albion ahead of the 2022-23 campaign, but the midfielder has started to play a less crucial role this season, often being utilised as a substitute or left on the bench.
As such, there have been reports suggesting Ange Postecoglou is ready to cash-in on the former Brighton man this summer, which means the manager will need to bring in a replacement, and a number of targets have been identified.
Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, who is valued at around £66m, is one of the names on the list, alongside Real Betis’ Johnny Cardoso, with reports from February revealing Spurs are leading the race for the American’s signature due to a clause that allows them first option on the midfielder.

Spurs are now showing interest in a striker, who’s also being targeted by Arsenal, according to Florian Plettenberg.
ByDominic Lund Mar 4, 2025
GiveMeSport have now dropped a new update on Tottenham’s pursuit of Cardoso, reporting the Lilywhites are now increasingly likely to trigger the midfielder’s £21m clause to bring him to north London this summer.
Positive talks were held with Betis back in August, and the 23-year-old has continued to impress since then, most recently catching the eye with a solid performance against Real Madrid in La Liga last weekend.
Real Betis'JohnnyCardosocelebrates scoring their first goal
In light of the central midfielder’s impressive display, Spurs are now confident forking out £21m would be a savvy investment, but they are continuing to analyse whether he would be a good fit.
The defensive midfielder could be brought in as a direct replacement for Bissouma, with Postecoglou deciding this summer could be the right time to cash-in on the Mali international.
"Excellent" Cardoso impressing in La Liga
The Betis star put in a solid performance against Real Madrid last time out, scoring the opening goal in his side’s 2-1 triumph, but as pointed out by freelance scout Ben Mattinson, he tends to sit in deeper areas and flourishes defensively.
This assessment is corroborated by the fact the USA international has performed extremely well on several key defensive metrics over the past year, which suggests he could be a real upgrade on Bissouma.

It was a savvy move for Tottenham to negotiate a £21m release clause for Cardoso, which seems to be way below his value, judging by how he’s performed in La Liga, and if he continues to impress they should undoubtedly stump up the £21m this summer.
Chelsea have suffered a terrible turn in form since their 0-0 draw with Everton at Goodison Park on December 22nd, picking up just nine points in their last nine Premier League games, dropping from second in the league to sixth after 25 games played.

A mixture of their inexperience to see out games when they are ahead and control the tempo of a game, their lack of ability to break down low block defensive units and poor shot volume from their wide men have all contributed to this poor run of form. Something needs to change with Aston Villa up next…
Jadon Sancho's Chelsea woes
The wing pairing at Chelsea has been an issue in recent weeks, as a lack of output from wide areas has left the likes of Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson with an awful lot of the attacking workload.
Jadon Sancho
Noni Madueke has netted seven Premier League goals, but Pedro Neto has only managed two league goals and Jadon Sancho has only managed two himself.
Aside from Madueke, Neto and Sancho have been much less direct with their actions on the field, often turning back to retain possession, taking fewer shots in games and looking to create for others rather than taking the game by the scruff of the neck themselves.
Sancho did do this against Tottenham, getting Chelsea back into the game after going 2-0 down, but in recent weeks the form of Sancho hasn’t helped Maresca’s side, and it could require a change in this position to add something different.
But Sancho isn’t the only man who could be dropped, as there is another Chelsea star who has been in poor form in recent weeks.
The Chelsea star who now needs to be dropped
Levi Colwill has made 23 appearances for the Blues this season, all coming in the Premier League, providing one assist, contributing to four clean sheets and totalling 2,070 minutes played.
Chalkboard
The 21-year-old defender has been a clear favourite of Maresca’s, but since Wesley Fofana went down injured, Colwill has struggled more in the defensive line.
Since Fofana’s injury, Colwill has been partnered with the likes of Benoit Badiashile, Tosin Adarabioyo, Josh Acheampong, Axel Disasi and Trevoh Chalobah (returning from loan in January).
Levi Colwill
The lack of consistency hasn’t helped the Blues backline, as they have struggled to find that same balance afforded to them with Colwill and Fofana together.
Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley described Colwill’s mistake against Brighton as “inexcusable” for their second goal, looking for a foul, not sprinting back into position to defend the ongoing attack and then conceding. And this isn’t the young defender’s only mistake in recent weeks, after also gifting West Ham their goal to go 1-0 up a few weeks ago.
Whilst the talent of Colwill is clear, and the future of Chelsea’s defensive line absolutely has him in it, after a few poor performances, the Blues could possibly do with taking him out of the firing line, bringing Adarabioyo in, who adds some experience and looking to weather the storm.
Enzo Maresca sack claim made by ex-club chief as Chelsea pressure grows
Leeds United dropped down to second in the Championship table over the weekend after Sheffield United secured all three points in their clash with Luton Town.
The Whites are now second in the division but can move straight back to the top of the league with as little as a point in their match against Sunderland this evening.
Daniel Farke’s side welcome the Black Cats, who are fourth in the table and can move level with Burnley with a win, to Elland Road for a big match-up tonight.
The West Yorkshire outfit come into this clash off the back of a terrific 4-0 win away at Watford in their last outing in the Championship, and will be hoping to follow up with another impressive showing.
Leeds are currently gunning for automatic promotion back to the Premier League at the second time of asking and that means that every point counts, with Sheffield United and Burnley providing stern competition.

The Whites came close to a huge three points when they visited the Stadium of Light in the reverse fixture earlier this season, only for disaster to strike…
What happened when Leeds visited Sunderland
Farke’s men travelled to Wearside at the start of October, in the early stages of the 2024/25 campaign, and played out an entertaining, for the neutral, 2-2 draw.
It was the Black Cats who struck first, though, as teenage sensation Chris Rigg converted from close-range after a scramble in the box provided him with a huge chance to score after just nine minutes.
Sunderland'sChrisRiggand Wilson Isidor celebrate after the match
Joel Piroe did not need long to find an answer for Leeds, however, as the Dutch centre-forward met Wilfried Gnonto’s beautiful cross from the right flank to head into the bottom corner in the 22nd minute.
It was then a stalemate until Junior Firpo drove forward down the left flank and played a one-two with Gnonto, who put it on a plate for the left-back to find the far corner in the 56th minute.
Leeds appeared to be on course for all three points at the Stadium of Light as they repelled attack after attack, with Joe Rodon making six clearances and three blocks in total.
However, with just seconds left in the match, Illan Meslier inexplicably allowed the ball to bounce through his grasp and into the back of his net after Firpo deflected an effort that seemed to be going straight towards the French goalkeeper.
It was a big mistake by the former Lorient man and one that he will surely be keen to avenge by putting in a fantastic performance against Sunderland this evening.
All of the players across the defence could need to be at their best, though, because Black Cats centre-forward Wilson Isidor has been in phenomenal form of late.
Wilson Isidor's form this season
The 24-year-old number nine failed to score in the reverse fixture but he did create a ‘big chance’ for his teammates and won four of his seven duels, which shows that it was far from a poor performance.
Sunderland's Wilson Isidor
Isidor, who joined the club on a permanent deal in the winter window after initially being on loan from Zenit, has proven himself to be a reliable striker at Championship level so far this season.
The French whiz has racked up 11 goals and seven ‘big chances’ created in 26 starts in the second tier for Regis Le Bris’ side, and has been in particularly impressive form of late.

As you can see in the table above, Isidor has registered one goal contribution in each of his last four matches in the league, which shows that Leeds are up against a striker who is confident and ready to produce tonight.
The Sunderland star, who scored the winner in a clash with Sheffield United last month, is a huge threat at the top end of the pitch and one that the Whites have to be wary of ahead of this game this evening at Elland Road.
In order to silence the in-form French marksman, Farke must ruthlessly ditch Ilia Gruev from the starting line-up in order to bring Pascal Struijk into the side.
Why Pascal Struijk could silence Wilson Isidor
Firstly, it will be harsh to drop the Bulgarian dynamo from the XI after he played the full 90 minutes against Watford last time out, but Struijk is now back from injury and bringing him into the team would allow Ethan Ampadu to play in his natural midfield role.
Gruev lost seven of his 11 duels against the Hornets and the captain, who has won 64% of his duels this season, could move up into midfield to offer more physicality in the middle of the park.
As well as improving the physicality of the midfield set-up, moving Ampadu into the midfield alongside Ao Tanak and dropping the Bulgaria international to the bench would provide Farke with the chance to reinstate Struijk next to Rodon.
The £50k-per-week Dutch defender, who was once dubbed “unbelievable” by former teammate Liam Cooper, recently missed four matches through injury and has been on the bench in the last three league outings, but should be brought into the XI for this game in order to utilise his defensive skills up against Isidor.

As you can see in the table above, Struijk could have a better chance of dealing with the in-form Sunderland centre-forward than Rodon, based on his superior defensive statistics in the Championship this season.
The former Ajax youngster has won the ball back more frequently than the Wales international, without making any major mistakes that have led to shots, goals, or penalties, and this suggests that he could be the man to silence Isidor this evening.
Worth more than Solomon: Leeds hero is now showing shades of Chris Wood
The striker has been on fire this season
ByJoe Nuttall Feb 17, 2025
That is why Farke must drop Gruev down to the bench to shuffle his side around, with Ampadu moving into midfield to dominate in the middle of the park and Struijk coming into the XI to deal with the French striker.
da marjack bet: Minus the obvious blip of losing to Leeds United at Bramall Lane, Sheffield United are currently deep in a purple patch of form that should see automatic promotion to the Premier League become a reality.
da fezbet: The Blades have impressively won five of their last six games in the competitive Championship, with a narrow 2-1 win away at Queens Park Rangers last time out strengthening their grip on the top two alongside Daniel Farke’s table-topping Whites.
But, not everything is unbelievably rosey involving £10m buy Tom Cannon, who had to make do with another unmemorable bench appearance at Loftus Road.
Cannon's poor performances at Sheffield United
Everyone in South Yorkshire would have expected the former Leicester City man to instantly hit the ground running considering he was just fresh off an explosive nine-goal loan stint at Stoke City.
But, it hasn’t worked out like that at all for the 22-year-old, with zero goals coming his way across six largely underwhelming displays, away from assisting fellow new signing Ben Brereton Diaz back at the start of February.
The Irishman hasn’t been helped by his own injury issues getting in the way, but the drab performances when he has been fully fit haven’t exactly boosted his first-team chances moving forward.
Indeed, Cannon has had to make do with cameos here and there in the last few games, with his 31-minute showing in the aforementioned blockbuster clash against Leeds leaving a lot to be desired as the former Potters attacker made just one sorry accurate pass.
Whilst the statement buy has failed to live up to his wild £10m price tag, another of United’s striker additions in the summer has quietly gone about his business as a more shrewd acquisition, having arrived at Bramall Lane as a free transfer.
Sheffield United's bargain capture has been better than Cannon
The promotion-chasers did utilise the free-agent market well before the 2024/25 campaign kicked into gear, with Callum O’Hare entering the ranks with a reputation for being a full-throttle attacker in the number ten role, having collected 22 goals and 30 assists on the books of Coventry City.
He has two goals and six assists next to his name under Chris Wilder’s wing this season, with Tyrese Campbell also up to the same amount of goal contributions himself as another inspired signing.
Seven of that ever-growing tally has resulted in Campbell hitting the back of the net, with a stunning strike last time out seeing the revitalised 25-year-old secure a slim 2-1 win for his side to further live up to his previous billing as being a “great finisher” by his former Stoke manager Michael O’Neill.
Having had to overcome his own injury demons to get to this point – with this season already seeing Campbell miss seven games due to a hamstring concern – it was a risky pick-up on the end of Wilder and Co but one that looks to have paid off already, considering not a single penny was splashed out for him and his electric form when at the top of his game.

Looking at the table above, Campbell has already matched his Championship appearance total from last season, with the potential there for him to eclipse his best goal haul in a single season.
Whilst the United number 23 aims to nail down a starting spot for good, Cannon will be desperately hoping for more first-team chances soon, with Wilder no doubt having to call upon his £10m addition down the line for some firepower when the season draws nearer to its tense conclusion.

WHAT HAPPENED?
Barca fans unleashed their wrath on centre-back Araujo, blaming him for the costly errors at the back which allowed Inter to equalise and eventually find the winner in the second leg of their Champions League semi-final at San Siro on Tuesday.

User @BCNOgi wrote on X: "Araujo is hilarious man. Can't even hate anymore. He just is what he is. [Darwin] Nunez of CBs."
Barca fan @Bri_an2 tweeted: "I hope you guys start appreciating [Andreas] Christensen now. If [Hansi] Flick subbed him on instead of Araujo we would be celebrating right now."
Another user, @agizzlefizzle12, wrote: "Players like Araujo make you hate the sport. The anger boiling inside of me right now isn’t good for my health man."
Real Madrid supporter @RkFutbol was clearly overjoyed at Barca's elimination, writing on X: "Real Madrid should give a guard of honor to Araujo only next Sunday for all his contributions to Real Madrid fans."
Barca fan @Ali400B was proud of every player, except Araujo, adding: "It’s not even about the loss, it’s about how we lost. Every player out there can hold their head high except Araujo. THE BIGGER PICTURE
Araujo was brought on by head coach Hansi Flick in the 76th minute in place of Inigo Martinez, who carried the risk of a second yellow card having been booked early on. Upon Araujo's arrival, the match was delicately poised at 2-2 on the night and 5-5 on aggregate, before Raphinha scored in the 87th minute to seemingly put the tie to bed.
However, it was not to be. Inter did not give up, scoring an equaliser in the third minute of stoppage time, as Francesco Acerbi crashed the box and held his own against the physicality of Araujo to slam Denzel Dumfries' low cross past a helpless Wojciech Szczesny. Araujo and Barca's night would go from bad to worse in the 99th minute, as substitute Davide Frattesi was afforded far too much space to slot the winner.
WHAT RONALD ARAUJO SAID
Speaking to (h/t Barca Blaugranes) after the game, Araujo took responsibility for Inter's third and fourth goals, admitting that he should have done better.
“On the fourth goal, I was in front and it was the striker’s luck to place it perfectly in the corner,” he explained.
“As for the third goal, I’m obviously very good at one-on-ones and I should have been better.
“But in the end, it’s football, if you cover well, you can also keep those balls at bay. But hey, it’s football, you have to keep your head up and keep moving forward.”
