Man Utd can get Zirkzee firing by appointing "supreme" Ten Hag replacement

Manchester United have been nothing short of appalling this season. Erik ten Hag’s side have won just four times, with two of those victories coming against the side who are second-bottom of the Premier League – Southampton – and League One side Barnsley in the Carabao Cup.

Unsurprisingly, Ten Hag’s position as Red Devils boss has come under question of late. His side are currently sitting in an astonishing 12th in the Premier League on just 11 points and a goal difference of minus two.

In the event Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS board decide to remove the Dutchman from his position, there have been several managers linked with the post at Old Trafford.

The managers who could replace Ten Hag

Perhaps the most obvious candidate for the United job if Ten Hag was to be sacked would be Ruud van Nistelrooy. The former United striker was brought back to the club by his country at the start of the season.

Given his experience as manager of PSV Eindhoven and his position as assistant manager at Old Trafford, he has been linked with the job in the event of the United hierarchy changing manager.

The man whom the Red Devils missed out on was former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel. The German was heavily linked with the post in the summer, and talks were believed to have taken place once again. However, the FA beat INEOS in the race, and Tuchel is now England’s boss.

Thomas Frank is another option that the United board are reportedly considering. He has done a superb job in charge of Brentford, both in the Premier League and Championship. His tactical flexibility is seen as a huge draw, and he recently said in a press conference that a new job might be the “challenge I need”. It is certainly something to keep an eye on.

There are certainly some viable options for the Red Devils, although there is one manager that could be good to turn down. That manager is Simone Inzgahi.

Why Inzaghi would be a good appointment

Inter boss Inzaghi has gone from strength to strength in Milan. According to multiple reports, including one from The Daily Star at the end of September, he is a ‘serious contender’ for the hot seat at Old Trafford.

Manchester United manager target Simone Inzaghi ahead of a Champions League game.

The Italian boasts a superb record at the helm of I Nerazzurri. So far during his time at the club, the 48-year-old has managed 169 games, getting 111 wins in that time, and suffering just 27 losses. It has been a very impressive tenure so far.

Inzaghi is a manager who favours a 3-5-2 system, placing great emphasis on his wingbacks to have a real licence to get forward and act as wingers when his side has the ball.

Playing this system, the Italian has masterminded some historic wins, although the best of the bunch may well have been the 5-1 victory over bitter rivals Milan.

Should the former attacker get the United job, United fans could finally see the best of striker Joshau Zirkzee. The Dutchman joined the club in the summer from Bologna for £36.5m, although he has just one goal to his name so far, a debut strike against Fulham.

United’s number 11 might well thrive under Inzaghi should he get the United job. The Dutchman, a self-professed 9.5, could excel in the Italian’s two-striker system. His game is built around dropping deep and linking up play, although that can leave the Red Devils short of a penalty box presence.

Manchester United's Joshua Zirkzee scores vs Fulham

However, playing in a two alongside the likes of Rasmus Hojlund, a more traditional striker who operates well inside the box, could see Zirkzee thrive. United get the best of both worlds, having one of the number nines dropping deep, pulling defenders with him to link up play and vacate space, whilst also having someone in the box to get on the end of chances.

That type of combination proved fruitful last term as Inter romped to the title, with Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez scoring 37 Serie A goals between them as a fearsome front two at San Siro.

The Italian manager’s system could manage to extract the best out of the young striker, something Ten Hag simply has not managed to do so far. Playing in a front two alongside Hojlund certainly gets the best out of him on paper.

Inzaghi, described as a “supreme” boss by football scout Antonio Mango, could be the ideal candidate to replace Ten Hag.

Not only is he an excellent tactician and motivator, but his system might get the best out of United’s forwards in a season where they have scored just seven Premier League goals.

Fresh report now reveals just how close Gary O’Neil is to Wolves exit

A fresh update regarding the future of Wolves boss Gary O’Neil has emerged ahead of his side’s clash with Crystal Palace.

Winless Wolves face relegation rat-race

Wolves bravely battled back from 2-0 down to rescue a point at the AMEX stadium in their most recent Premier League outing, with Matheus Cunha finding the net in stoppage time to complete the comeback after Brighton had squandered a glorious chance to make it 3-1.

After the game, O’Neil held up his hands, admitting that he had got it wrong in the first half.

“I’m a little bit disappointed, with myself really, that I started with five [at the back]. I know we did well with a five-back against Manchester City, and [I thought] the lads deserved another go at it.

“I didn’t think a five-back would fit very well against Brighton today, but at least we were quick enough to change it at half-time.

“At 85 minutes, when Brighton scored their second goal, I thought I was going to be stood here answering some more tough questions.”

However, beyond the short-term jubilation the reality of their situation once more set in for Wolves, who are one of three sides yet to win a game this season and sit 19th in the Premier League almost a quarter of the way into the season. They have just two points and have conceded a mammoth 25 goals, five more than any other side in the division.

Wolves now making early move to sign 36-goal attacker in January

Wolves look to be trying to get a head start for January as they make contact with a transfer target.

ByBrett Worthington Oct 30, 2024 Gary O'Neil given two games to save his job

Now, a fresh report has claimed that the Wolves boss is under increasing pressure to deliver results at Molineux. So far, there has been an acceptance that Wolves have faced one of the hardest starts to the season of any Premier League season, playing all of the current top five (Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool and Aston Villa) as well as Newcastle United.

Now though, there is set to be a change of tone, with Football Insider reporting that the next two games are crucial in O’Neil’s future in the Wolves technical area. The Old Gold face 18th placed Crystal Palace in their next game, before a mammoth clash with bottom of the table Southampton ahead of the November international break.

Wolves’ next five games

Crystal Palace (Home)

Southampton (Home)

Fulham (Away)

Bournemouth (Home)

Everton (Away)

And they claim that poor results in those games will “change the mood’” in the Midlands, with the upcoming games “critical” for O’Neil’s future, though it is added that the Wolves boss “still has the backing of the changing room”.

However, failure to pick up points against their direct relegation rivals may prove too much for both the Wolves fans and the board, with the prospect of a drop to the Championship likely to become an increasing reality.

Should Wolves part ways with O’Neil over the international break, any new manager would be the beneficiary of a favourable run of games, with the Old Gold not facing a member of the “top six” again until Boxing Day.

Então a cobertura in loco foi bem limitada.

Simmons heaps praise on 'unique' Brathwaite

While Bangladesh are down on confidence, West Indies are bursting with it and coach Phil Simmons now wants his team to continue this progress for the rest of the World Test Championship cycle. The captain Kraigg Brathwaite has been a significant factor in West Indies’ rise in the last 18 months. He made the highest score (94) across all four innings in the Antigua Test against Bangladesh and, according to his coach, is constantly getting better as both a player and a leader.”Everyone has seen [Brathwaite’s] determination,” Simmons said. “His unique style. He doesn’t have a problem doing his job for five days. It is unique because a lot of batsmen nowadays like to play shots and be done with it.”From his point of view, he wants to be there for the team. That rolls into the captaincy. He is not loud but the players know what he wants. He makes them understand in his unique way. He seems to be growing in the role.”With their victory on Sunday, West Indies have now won three of their eight WTC matches and are unbeaten in their last four Tests.”We started 2021 in the same way,” Simmons said. “We won two in Bangladesh, and drew two against Sri Lanka. It is about how we go forward from here. I want to be unbeaten in all five Tests in this year. That would be good for me. Guys are getting confident in what they are doing. It makes your job and role easier the more confidence you have. It has happened especially after winning the series against England not too long ago. The confidence showed.”Kemar Roach too contributed heavily in the Antigua win, after nearly missing the game. The 33-year old fast bowler had to clear a last-minute fitness test to make himself available for selection, and once he did, he terrorised the Bangladesh batting line-up, finishing with match figures of 7 for 74 and equalling Michael Holding’s tally of 249 Test wickets.”[Roach] has taken things to the next level,” Simmons said. “He has been excellent. He is now tied with Mikey [Holding], but in the dressing room he is always leading the youngsters. He has played 70 Tests, so he educates them. It is great to have him in the dressing room.”There were other boxes ticked off as well. John Campbell made his first Test fifty in 15 innings, an innings which helped them recover from 9 for 3 and see off a chase of 84. “I think it was really important,” Simmons said. “He has had good starts in most of the games but failed to get past that 30-40 mark. The unbeaten fifty must give him some kind of confidence to get that big score, hopefully in the next Test match.”West Indies’ slip catching too was impressive in this Test match. They took 13 catches behind the wicket, dropping just the one. Six of those 13 catches were taken at slip, while wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva gobbled up the other seven. Simmons was asked to explain this and he said, “it is a matter of practice. I think the guys are enjoying the fact that the balls are coming to them. It is after a long time I am seeing the ball going to first slip in the Caribbean. It is nice to see.”There’s also the fact that Jason Holder might come back into the team later in the year so nobody wants to be put out of there. They know that he will walk right back into the slips. That could be a motivation too.”

Game-changer: Arsenal handed golden chance to land £71m Havertz upgrade

There is no sugar-coating it, Arsenal are in a serious slump at the moment.

Mikel Arteta’s side are supposed to be fighting for the Premier League title this season, but following their loss to Newcastle United last week, they are currently seven points behind leaders Liverpool.

Moreover, their defeat to Inter Milan during the week was their third in six games, and while the defence looks shaky, the attack looks blunt. In short, the Gunners need to change something and quickly.

So, fans should be excited about recent reports that have suggested the club now have a golden opportunity to secure the services of an exceptionally gifted number nine, even if that would impact Kai Havertz’s game time.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from GIVEMESPORT, Arsenal will have the chance to launch an early bid for Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres in January.

The report has revealed that there is a gentlemanly agreement between the player and club that he can leave in the summer for around £62.5m, but should clubs wish to jump ahead of the ever-growing queue, then they can opt to pay £71m in January.

While that’s good news, the bad news is that, alongside the Gunners, the report also claims that Paris Saint-Germain and several clubs from the Saudi Pro League are now keen on the Swede, meaning there could even be significant competition in January.

In all, it could still be a complicated and costly transfer to get done, but due to Gyokeres’ incredible ability, one worth pursuing, even if that negatively impacts Havertz’s game time in North London.

How Gyokeres compares to Havertz

So, if Arsenal are going to spend up to £71m – or more – on Gyokeres in January, it certainly won’t be with the intention of making him warm the bench, meaning he’ll be in direct competition with Havertz for a place in the starting lineup.

Sporting CP strikerViktor Gyokeres.

With that said, how to the pair stack up against one another? Is it an easy win for the Sporting ace?

Well, unfortunately for the former Chelsea man, it very much is, as across his 51 appearances for Arteta’s side last season, he racked up a reasonable tally of 14 goals and seven assists, meaning he averaged 0.41 goal involvements every game.

viktor-gyokeres-transfer-news-leeds-united-championship

However, in his 50 appearances for the Portuguese giants last season, the former Coventry City star, whom ex-teammate Maxime Biamou dubbed “unplayable”, scored 43 goals and provided 15 assists, equating to an obscene average of 1.16 goal involvements every game.

Things remain just as one-sided when we look at this season as well.

In just 17 appearances for the Lisbon side, the Stockholm-born goal machine has found the back of the net on 23 occasions and provided four assists to boot, meaning he’s currently averaging 1.58 goal involvements every game.

In contrast, the Gunners’ number 29 has got on the scoresheet seven times in 16 games and has one assist to his name, which works out to a still impressive but significantly worse average of 0.50 goal involvements per match.

Ultimately, even when you account for a slightly weaker league, the difference in goalscoring ability between Havertz and Gyokeres is enormous, and if Arsenal want to claw back lost ground on Liverpool and Manchester City in the new year, then they must sign the Swedish goalmachine in January.

Inter Miami narrowly escaped defeat to New York City FC, as Lionel Messi powered them to a 2-2 draw with two assists.

The South Beach club earned a crucial point to kick off the defense of their Supporters' Shield, but it almost wasn't meant to be.

The began things on a high note, taking a remarkably early lead just five minutes into the match. Messi recorded his first goal-contribution of the season, sending a delicious ball across the six-yard box to find a sliding Tomas Aviles, who found the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

Two minutes later, though, things began to go downhill for the hosts.

Winger Fafa Picault pulled up with a non-contact injury, going to the ground holding the back of his leg, forcing Javier Mascherano into his first change just seven minutes into the match.

Then, in the 23rd minute, things went from bad to worse as Aviles saw red for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity offense. The young Argentine committed a reckless sliding tackle on the edge of his own box, taking out the legs of striker Alonso Martinez. Reduced to 10 men, Mascherano's men conceded an equalizer off the ensuing free kick, as the executed a brilliantly designed set-piece with Mitja Ilenic leveling.

Ten minutes into the second half, NYCFC took the lead in the contest, with Martinez capitalizing off a catastrophic error from Jordi Alba. The Spaniard lost the ball right outside his own box, and the Costa Rica international pounced, smashing home to give his club a 2-1 lead.

The had a handful of chances throughout the latter stages of the match to draw level, but a goal never arrived through regulation. However, 11 minutes of stoppage time were added, which proved to be their saving grace.

In the 100th minute of the match, defender Ian Fray drove forward in heroic fashion, finding Messi in NYCFC's end of the pitch, and from there, the Argentine did what he does best. He found the run of substitute Telascvo Segovia, whose looping shot dipped over a forthcoming Matt Freese, but the NYCFC goalkeeper could do nothing about it.

With the late equalizer, Miami earned a point, snatching what was looking to be a brilliant road victory out from under the nose of the on opening day.

Miami and NYCFC last met in Fall 2024, with the two sides ending in a stalemate as U.S. international James Sands equalized in the dying minutes of the match.

THE MVP

Lionel Messi:

Down to 10 men, they needed some late magic, and boy did he bring it. Their best attacker throughout the second half, Messi finally helped them draw level in the 10th minute of stoppage-time via his brilliant assist to Telasco Segovia.

The Argentine's brilliance helped them overcome two major individual errors, and that is exactly why he was named the club's captain prior to the start of the campaign.

Getty Images SportTHE BIG LOSER

Tomas Aviles:

From hero to villain, the young Argentine let his team down on Saturday.

All throughout 2024, he was a loose cannon. He would go from having rock-solid performances to outings plagued by immaturity and poor decision-making. Saturday's match saw a mix of both.

Ultimately, his sending-off cost Miami three points, and he will have to accept that.

Haseeb Hameed, having got off the mark with a beautiful drive to the extra cover boundary, edged to first slip before the left-handed Ben Slater was bowled not offering a shot. With the ball doing plenty, it was tough going for Nottinghamshire, who would have been 26 for 3 had Patel not dropped Montgomery off Barnes at first slip.Joe Clarke, for whom form has been elusive much of the season, took 32 balls to get off the mark but he and Montgomery guided Nottinghamshire to 82 for 2 at lunch. Yet after appearing to have weathered the storm, Nottinghamshire found themselves back in its grip from the start of the afternoon session.Barnes brought one back sharply to have Clarke leg before, picked up a second wicket as Montgomery played a loose shot to backward point and Lyndon James, missed at first slip on 4, edged Wright low to second slip.Roman Walker struck twice as Tom Moores was taken at third slip and Liam Patterson-White – dropped on 15 – offered a low return catch. Steve Mullaney was leg before to a full, swinging ball from Barnes.Brett Hutton nicked to the keeper off Callum Parkinson’s left-arm spin and Dane Paterson lasted just long enough to claim Nottinghamshire a batting point before he holed out to deep midwicket to give Finan a wicket on his first-class debut. It was Nottinghamshire’s lowest first-innings total of the season, yet it looked handsome indeed as Fletcher tore through the Leicestershire top order. After Hassan Azad was caught behind off one that left him late, Fletcher sent Louis Kimber’s off stump cartwheeling, had Colin Ackermann caught at third slip and swung one back into Patel’s pads as the visitors reeled at 32 for 4, which quickly became 33 for 5 as Harry Swindells was trapped in front by Paterson.Hutton made his mark as Barnes was leg before trying to work one off his pads and dismissed Walker via a fine catch by James at third slip. Parkinson nicked Paterson behind – the South African’s 100th first-class wicket for Nottinghamshire in just 22 matches – before Wright chipped Hutton to mid-on.Finan survived just long enough for Evans to complete his half-century – a remarkable effort in the circumstances – off 71 balls, but was bowled shouldering arms to Patterson-White four balls later.

Perfect for Cunha: Wolves could hire attacking 4-3-3 O’Neil replacement

Gary O’Neil is arguably on borrowed time in the Molineux dug-out, as his despondent Wolverhampton Wanderers side fell to yet another harrowing Premier League defeat last match.

The porous Old Gold defence shipped a disastrous five goals on their travels to Thomas Frank’s Brentford, leading to a full-time score of 5-3 in favour of the Bees, with Wolves rooted to the bottom of the division.

That means the West Midlands strugglers have now leaked a league-worst 21 goals from just seven games, and with only one point next to their name from that string of dire displays, something could soon have to change.

The latest on Gary O'Neil's future at Wolves

As per a recent report by Football Insider, a decision could soon be made concerning the former AFC Bournemouth boss’ future at Molineux, with the Old Gold hierarchy deliberating over a call currently.

Yet, Sky Sports have also suggested that the powers that be at the Premier League’s basement club will stick by O’Neil despite looming pressures surrounding his job security, considering the 41-year-old did help his side finish in a respectable 14th spot last campaign after picking up the pieces from Julen Lopetegui.

O’Neil did cut a dejected figure after the Brentford loss, however, labelling the contest as the “worst game” he’s been involved with since stepping up to be a coach after his playing days, and so the Old Gold manager might just want to be put of his misery soon in the dug-out.

Wolves will no doubt already have a tentative list of managers that they’re keeping an eye on if they do decide to pull the plug on the 41-year-old’s up-and-down tenure, with a temptation to explore previous faces they’ve been linked with.

A candidate to replace O'Neil at Wolves

When the Wolves hierarchy were scrambling to appoint a new figure after Lopetegui, Peter Bosz’s was popping up as a potential successor.

Since then, the Dutchman has taken over the reins at PSV Eindhoven, with his time in the Eredivisie to date an overwhelming success.

As can be seen looking at the table above, Bosz has turned PSV into a free-flowing, entertaining watch under his managerial regime to date, with a mightily impressive goal tally of 173 strikes managed from 60 games.

To give further context, that’s a record of 2.8 per game, far better than Wolves under O’Neil who have managed just 1.4 goals per match.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast's Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

Often lining up his PSV side in an attacking 4-3-3 set-up, Bosz could be a welcome breath of fresh air if he was to take on the hot seat at Wolves, if he can be tempted to up and leave the Dutch giants for a relegation challenge in England.

As a result of his phenomenal record in the final third with PSV, star man Matheus Cunha would no doubt be licking his lips at the prospect of the ex-Borussia Dortmund manager taking over, with the Brazilian trickster capable of leading the line as a lone centre-forward or playing down the flanks.

Even as Wolves continue to struggle at the foot of the league, Cunha’s goals haven’t completely dried up, with the South American striker helping himself to three goals from seven league games.

Matheus Cunha

Therefore, the 25-year-old could be taken to a new level altogether with a fresh face in charge, to further boost his glowing number of 19 strikes from 64 Wolves games to date. He could take influence from Dutch forward Luuk de Jong in order to do so with the ageing striker rattling home 44 goals in 58 games under Bosz’s tutelage.

Of course, all of this is just speculative talk at the moment, with it looking more likely that the Old Gold will stick by O’Neil for the time being.

But, if this poor form ends up continuing on and on, they could soon have to go against this support and look to the likes of Bosz for answers.
