49ers send Leeds officials to join race to sign "exciting" £5m sensation

da dobrowin: Not looking to miss out on a rising star, the 49ers Enterprises have now reportedly sent Leeds United officials to join the race in pursuit of a rising star in Scottish football, who has attracted plenty of interest as of late.

Leeds transfer news

da casino: Leeds know all about trying to keep hold of a future star, of course, having failed to prevent Archie Gray’s exit to Tottenham Hotspur in a summer full of exits a few months ago. Now, they’ll want to flip the script and land a young sensation of their own in the transfer market.

Those at Elland Road are in a strong position to convince reinforcements too, given that they now sit top of the Championship in the early race for title glory and subsequent promotion.

When the January transfer window arrives, the Yorkshire club have the opportunity to welcome the additions that could all but seal promotion to the Premier League, before then turning their attention towards future stars for Daniel Farke’s side.

According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, the 49ers have now sent Leeds officials to join the race for Lennon Miller, who has been priced at a minimum £5m by Motherwell as they look to at least benefit from the Scottish sensation’s potential exit.

Leeds have made an "unbelievable signing" who could be sold for big money

The Leeds United ace has already broken records during his short stint at Elland Road.

Those at Elland Road aren’t the only ones interested, however. In fact, a whole host of English clubs are reportedly chasing Miller’s signature, including Manchester United, Newcastle United, Liverpool and Championship rivals Sunderland. With that said, it could be an impressive coup if Leeds managed to welcome the 18-year-old midfielder.

A player who may make up for Gray’s exit, Leeds should go all out to sign Miller if they’re given the opportunity when 2025 arrives.

"Exciting" Miller could make up for Gray's departure

Injuries to midfielders Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev caused quite the headache for Farke, although Ao Tanaka and Joe Rothwell have been brilliant in their absence. A situation which highlighted Leeds’ lack of depth in the middle of the park at the time, Miller’s arrival wouldn’t just be one for the future.

The teenager has starred in Motherwell’s senior side this season, reaching four goals and four assists to prove that he no longer belongs in academy football. Now, he looks destined for his biggest move yet.

As a result of his continued rise over the last year or so, Miller has attracted plenty of interest and praise, with most of that coming from Motherwell boss Stuart Kettlewell, who told reporters as relayed by The Herald earlier this year: “I just think he is a really exciting talent. If he was playing at one of the other clubs I would be waxing lyrical about him as well because I do get excited when you see really good footballers in Scotland.

“It’s brilliant for us all to market and sell the product and the brand in this country. I am absolutely delighted that I feel we have got one of the top guys at his age and somebody that I believe can go on and have a real, real good future in the game.”

New role: Howe can replicate Joelinton success with Newcastle sensation

da cassino: Newcastle United’s success has been wonderful. Supporters could never have dreamt of Champions League nights and consistent attacks toward the uppermost echelon of the Premier League table while languishing under Mike Ashley’s rule.

da bet7k: But the tycoon has been gone from Tyneside for several years now, and the pointers suggest that the Magpies are going to enjoy lofty heights for many years to come.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe

Eddie Howe has fashioned an outfit that it greater than the sum of its parts. St. James’ Park is home to some top-class players, of course, but the crop has grown as one through these exciting seasons of growth.

Newcastle have burgeoned, and while he’s not the… flashiest player in the squad, Joelinton embodies the development of his side, for he too has reached a level unseen after the dreary early days of his United career.

Joelinton's Newcastle resurgence

You’d have to credit Steve Bruce with the creation of this hybrid form of Joelinton, who was a flop, the floppiest of flops, in the seasons following his club-record £40m transfer from Hoffenheim.

Well-known manager Julian Nagelsmann had heralded the Brazilian as a “beast who is a nightmare to defend against” back in his German days, but he fell by the wayside in the Premier League, unable to adapt to the pace and intensity of the English game.

The striker-turned-roving-number-eight has been a fundamental part of Newcastle’s football under Howe’s wing, bringing a monstrous and unyielding style to charge the midfield and serve as a counterpoint of sorts to the music that Bruno Guimaraes creates with his technical command.

An effective Premier League striker he was not, but the 28-year-old has now completed 107 appearances under his manager across a four-year period, and is patently a midfielder of real importance within the Toon set-up.

His influence is emphasised through the data revealed by FBref. Over the past year, Joelinton ranks among the top 17% of midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues for goals scored, the top 16% for progressive carries, the top 17% for successful take-ons and the top 19% for tackles per 90.

Effective in front of goal now that it’s not his chief responsibility and capable of bull-like penetrations into the danger area, Joelinton has been hailed for his reshaping by journalist Antonio Mango, who said: “the way he’s transformed himself is extraordinary.”

He’s also a key defensive component, for he has averaged 2.5 tackles and 5.9 successful duels per Premier League match, as per Sofascore, this season.

The complete midfielder? It certainly feels like he has it all in his locker when he’s on his a-game in black and white, and Howe must be chomping at the bit to repeat the club’s feat in sculpting such a player from raw parts.

Though he’s hardly struggling in his current deployment, Lewis Hall could be the next Magpie to bloom into a fresh role down the line.

Lewis Hall could be Howe's own Joelinton

Hall is doing quite the job at left-back for Newcastle, with Alan Shearer even claiming that he was “blown away” by the 20-year-old during his negation of Bukayo Saka’s quality during the 1-0 victory over Arsenal just shy of a month ago.

Sources close to Newcastle suggest that Hall has been told that his immediate Newcastle future will remain at left-back, despite the ace having plied most of his youth trade in central midfield. But he can thrive in the engine room again; it’s something that Howe should consider.

He’s showing that, like Joelinton, he can make the requisite tweaks to become a polished player capable of operating in the centre of the field, with analyst Raj Chohan already noting that the dynamo’s “defensive level is rapidly improving.”

His statistical data, pulled from Premier League performances this season, show that Hall is turning into a robust and reliable option down the left channel, not the most active ball carrier but not shy of wading into the deep end when called upon.

The nuts and bolts of his skill set stem from technical quality and creativity, mixed against an ever-improving defensive spread that makes a telling comment on his faculty for success in midfield.

Hall, hailed for his “sensational” showings by content creator Pete Davey, might spend some time on the defensive left flank over the coming campaigns, but he’s still so young and has all the properties required to become a superstar in the centre.

Newcastle’s decision to sign him from Chelsea, who he cut his teeth with as a youth, for a £28m fee in August after he spent the 2023/24 season on loan at St. James’ Park is proving to be a brilliant one, even if it was met with scepticism initially.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

With nine top-flight starts to his name already this term, averaging 1.3 key passes and 4.5 ball recoveries per game, Hall is becoming one of Newcastle’s most important members.

Who’s to say that he couldn’t emulate Joelinton though, and step into midfield down the line to help propel Newcastle even further forward?

Bonds strong, results weak for Vijay and Dhawan

For all their looking out for each other, M Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan have still not added fifty in an innings outside Asia.

Sidharth Monga at the Ageas Bowl30-Jul-2014When Shikhar Dhawan hit an innocuous full toss back at Moeen Ali at Trent Bridge he had fallen one short of what would have been his and M Vijay’s first 50-run opening stand outside Asia in 14 innings together. The 49 in what began mostly as a dead innings remains their highest outside Asia. The longest the opposition has had to wait for a wicket is 14 overs.Opening partners are usually good mates. They look out for each other. They are open with each other. They don’t mind letting each other know of their insecurities, their fears. Matthew Hayden used to say he and Justin Langer were almost like a couple. Might have good times, might have bad, but there for each other.Shikhar Dhawan has struggled on this tour•Getty ImagesVirender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir are friends off the field. Sehwag never minded asking Gambhir to take most of the strike when chasing a small total because Sehwag had a streak of losing interest when not facing a big task and thus throwing his wicket away. “Whenever I go onto the field and I have Sehwag at the other end, it gives me a lot of confidence,” Gambhir once said. “No doubts about that. He has been one of my very good friends.”Vijay and Dhawan wouldn’t have been great friends when they were picked to open the innings for Rest of India against Mumbai early in 2013. They had played against each other plenty of times in domestic cricket but had batted with each other only once in first-class cricket and four times in List A. They had both been in and out of the Indian team, and quite a few would have thought their best cricket had come and left them.Vijay had scored 138 runs at 17.25 in Ranji Trophy yet had been picked in the Rest of India squad. Dhawan had been better, but 461 runs at 51.22 in Ranji Trophy is hardly the look-at-me-I’m-here stuff. Vijay was 29, Dhawan was 27. This punt from the new selectors allowed them a new lease of life. The existing India openers, though, were on their way out. Some might argue they should have been out earlier. These two now added 144. Vijay got a hundred, Dhawan a half-century, both were given what might have been one last India chance, and they added 289. They might not have known each other well earlier, but their comeback began together; a bond had been built.By the time India went on to win their first overseas Test in three years – at Lord’s – you could see the two were looking out for each other. When, fielding in the slips, Dhawan has something stuck in his eye, Vijay rushed to pluck it out. Vijay had batted exceptionally well at Lord’s but had fallen five short of a century. When the win was achieved, Vijay looked to settle into the background in the celebrations, but Dhawan went back, plucked a stump and handed it over to Vijay. A quiet little acknowledgement from an opening batsman to the other when he might have been lost in the euphoria of Ishant Sharma and the bouncers.Who knows they might have even have talked of a more public satisfaction when they score runs together. They haven’t. In the last seven Tests, India have been 22 for 1 on an average. Vijay has scored runs in South Africa and here, Dhawan in New Zealand, but not together. Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli have been walking in to face tricky circumstances. “It is frustrating,” Dhawan said of the lack of runs between the two. “Vijay has been batting really well, but unfortunately I haven’t contributed much. I have been working hard on my game, sometimes you can’t do much when you get out to good balls.”But the bond between Vijay and Dhawan has remained. The two look out for each other, running almost in Twenty20 fashion, pouncing on every slight opportunity they might get of getting the other guy off strike, making the bowler change his line of attack from a right-hand batsman to a left-hand batsman or the other way around. In the second innings here, with India needing a long opening stand to give them any hope of saving the Test, they were watchful, they ran 14 of the 26 runs together, they had seen off what looked like the first spells of Anderson and Stuart Broad. With the last ball of his sixth over, Anderson had sent square leg back, and Dhawan bunted one in that direction for a single. Singles, the building block these two have been after. To the first ball of a bowler other than Anderson and Broad, Dhawan bunted one towards square leg again. Broad wasn’t at the boundary this time, but was a little deep. This single was fair game for the pair. Dhawan set off right away, Vijay hesitated mildly. Yet they were making it comfortably. Vijay took it easy in the end. A moment of switching off. No stretch, no desperation to get the bat in. The bad Vijay, who takes catches casually, who takes his eye off the ball in the field. Not the one who has been leaving balls like his life depends on him. Not the one who has been sprinting hard to get his partner off strike. And bang, Broad hits the stumps direct. Well, not quite bang. The bails came off softly. They took their time. It will make Vijay even more distraught when he sees the replay. For all their looking out for each other, Vijay and Dhawan have still not added fifty in an innings outside Asia. Pujara, who might have wanted to walk in at a big score for one, should be so lucky.

Wolves may rue selling £5m "leader" who is now outscoring Cunha

da heads bet: Wolverhampton Wanderers head coach Gary O’Neil made some positive signings during the summer transfer window, but he has yet to see the fruits of his labour.

da realbet: After nine Premier League matches this term, the Old Gold have drawn two and lost seven, failing to win a single game as they currently occupy 19th place in the table.

In fairness, the club faced Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City during the opening period of the campaign. A tough start indeed.

The Molineux side did show plenty of fight to rescue a point against Brighton and Hove Albion on the weekend, scoring twice in the dying minutes and this should give O’Neil some confidence that they are on the right path, even if results don’t necessarily show it.

Despite the influx of players during the summer, it was one of the stars from last season who came up with the goods against the south coast side last week – Matheus Cunha.

Matheus Cunha’s season in numbers for Wolves

Last season, the Brazilian was arguably Wolves’ key player as they managed to avoid a relegation battle, finishing in 14th place, although they did secure wins over Man City and Chelsea throughout the campaign.

Cunha scored 14 goals for the Old Gold to end 2023/24 as the club’s highest scorer, and he is carrying that form into the current campaign.

Despite the Midlands side struggling domestically, the former Atlético Madrid star has scored four goals in the opening nine league matches of 2024/25, including the late equaliser against Brighton last weekend.

Cunha

If the forward can continue to score over the next few weeks, Wolves might secure their first three points of the season, especially with a run of slightly ‘easier’ fixtures to come against Crystal Palace and Southampton before the next international break.

It isn’t just his goals which make Cunha a vital cog in the Wolves’ machine, as the Brazilian loves to create chances for others, as evidenced by the fact he has already created five big chances and averages 1.7 key passes per game in the top flight.

The 25-year-old also succeeds with 1.7 dribbles per game – a success rate of 58% – allowing him to get the better of the opposite defence, thus creating space to generate either a scoring chance or to assist a teammate.

Via Sofascore

His contribution to the club since August 2023 cannot be underestimated and it Wolves do suffer relegation at the end of the season, he will surely have no shortage of potential suitors looking to snap him up next summer.

Now, if goals can come from other sources, the Old Gold may just move away from the drop zone in the coming weeks. If only they had a striker who was able to chip in with goals on a regular basis. Someone like Raul Jimenez, for example…

Raul Jimenez's record at Wolves

The Mexican striker emerged as somewhat of a cult figure during his spell at Wolves, especially with the form he displayed across his first couple of seasons.

Having joined the club from Benfica in the summer of 2018 on a season-long loan deal, Nuno Espírito Santo agreed a £30m deal with the Portuguese striker ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

Over those two seasons, Jimenez scored a total of 40 goals for the club, including ten in the Europa League, as the Old Gold reached the quarter-finals of the competition.

This was as good as it got for the Mexican star, however, as the following three seasons saw him score just 13 goals in all competitions as he bravely battled back from a skull fracture, among other ailments, which saw the 33-year-old miss 54 games in total.

It was clear his future at Wolves was bleak, and he was sold to Fulham for just £5m in the summer of 2023.

Considering he was entering the final few years of his career; it looked like a decent decision by the club. 18 months later, however, could the Old Gold regret letting him leave for such a small fee considering how impressive he has been in London?

Raul Jimenez’s stats for Fulham

It took a while for the player to get going at Craven Cottage, but he ended up netting seven times in 24 Premier League games last term. A hamstring injury meant he missed a chunk of the campaign.

It now looks as though he has put all his problems behind him, enjoying a wonderful start to the current season for the Cottagers. Indeed, five goals across 11 games in all competitions suggest there is life in the old dog yet.

With Cunha having scored four times for Wolves, Jimenez is even outscoring the Brazilian. Might the club rue letting him leave last year?

Like the current Wolves centre-forward, Jimenez has also contributed in other areas. Not only has he created four big chances, but the Mexican international averages 0.9 key passes per game while grabbing an assist.

Jimenez is also still shining for his country, scoring against the USA in a recent friendly between the two nations, and he was praised by coach Javier Aguirre in the process.

“He came back very well [from his injury], very well. He’s scored goals, he’s made assists. He looks mature and in good form, having completely overcome his injury. I think he is definitely a leader for us.” Said the manager post-game, and it looks as though Jimenez is enjoying an Indian summer.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

If he carries on his current form over the next few months, Fulham could secure a top-half finish in the Premier League for only the second time since 2012.

Wolves’ loss has very much been Fulham’s gain, especially with the striker going through a purple patch right now.

Star makeshift striker Kai Havertz then cemented his side’s place in the quarter-final draw with Arsenal’s third of the game, rounding off a comfortable win, and the north Londoners are set to host Crystal Palace at the Emirates in the next round.

Emmanuel Petit digs at "average" Arsenal summer signings

In truth, Arteta has been dealt many issues in the early stages of this season, mostly revolving around injuries to key players.

Mikel Merino and Riccardo Calafiori, who both arrived in the summer window, have both been sidelined at various points – while Raheem Sterling is still yet to showcase his true ability after coming in on a season-long loan deal from Chelsea.

Speaking to Jeffbet, via The Metro, Petit has aimed a subtle dig at Edu and called Arsenal’s signings “average” – explaining that an attacking midfielder is badly needed at N5 and suggesting they really shouldn’t have parted company with Emile Smith-Rowe.

Arsenaltechnical directorEdu Gaspar and managing director Vinai Venkatesham

“Arsenal need an attacking midfielder, it’s the position they’re missing at the moment,” said Petit.

“When it’s Rice, Mikel Merino and Leandro Trossard in the midfield, there is no creativity there. Because Kai Havertz roams about the pitch, there is not a consistent pass to the striker. A solution could have been Emile Smith Rowe, but he’s gone to Fulham.

“I watched the game with William Gallas, we agreed Arsenal have a quality squad but not many quality players. When the spine gets injured, the team struggles. If that happens to Manchester City or Liverpool, they don’t struggle. I think the new Arsenal signings have looked average, but I won’t point any fingers.”

U.S. men's national team stars Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah started for Milan, who jumped out to an early lead behind Theo Hernandez and Tammy Abraham. That duo combined for both goals, with the former assisting the latter in the 17th and 43rd minutes to give Milan the lead heading into the halftime break.

Roma pulled one back early in the second half through Artem Dovbyk, but Milan pushed back with another goal of their own thanks to two newcomers. Mexico's Santi Gimenez provided the assist and fellow January signing Joao Felix, on loan from Chelsea, provided the goal, giving Milan a 3-1 lead.

That scoreline would hold, despite a Roma goal called back, as AC Milan booked their spot in the tournament's semifinal round.

It was a big debut for GImenez, who adds a bit more CONCACAF flavor to one of the world's biggest clubs. The Mexican star emerged as a top goalscorer at Feyenoord, with 65 goals in 105 appearances for the club. Those goals earned him a move to Milan in a deal worth around $35 million.

He started on the bench, though, as the two Americans were named to the starting XI. Pulisic went 59 minutes and could have had a goal if Abraham had opted to square it instead of taking it for himself on his second finish. Pulisic did have one shot and one chance created while completing all but two of his passes. Musah, meanwhile, started in central midfield and put in a very strong shift. The American had some good moments defensively while helping Milan drive the game forward, completing two dribbles while creating a chance and firing a shot on goal.

With the win, Milan will face either Inter or Lazio on April 2 in the first leg of their semifinal clash. Before that, though, the club will look to climb out of its Serie A hole starting this weekend against Empoli. After that, they'll coincidentally head to the Netherlands to face Gimenez's former club Feyenoord in the Champions League on Feb. 12.

Lange and chairman Daniel Levy brought in a host of new signings over the summer window, including £65 million striker Dominic Solanke, but more work could be needed on the squad before they emerge as genuine title challengers. However, Postecoglou is adamant that they can compete this year.

“It’s why I came here,” said Postecoglou on Tottenham challenging for trophies.

“I came here to try to win things. I think that should be our measure and if we fall short of that then we’ve fallen short and we need to be better. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with embracing that.

“It’s just the way I’m wired, I think it’s the way forward and you need to embrace that if you want to become a successful club and not shy away from it. If I said: ‘This is going to take three or four years,’ then yeah it would relieve pressure. But I don’t want to wait three or four years. This year’s an opportunity.”

Reports this week claim Tottenham are eyeing Javi Puado as an alternative to Son Heung-min, while it is also believed that Spurs are interested in signing FC Midtjylland forward Dario Osorio.

Both men would significantly bolster Postecoglou’s forward options, with another very exciting young target in Viktoria Plzen midfielder Pavel Sulc attracting their attention too.

As well as Spurs, a host of other top sides in Man City, Aston Villa, Napoli, Atalanta, Marseille, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen are all keeping tabs on the Czech Republic international.

Sulc also bagged an impressive 22 goals in all competitions last season, leaving little surprise that clubs are taking note of his exploits.

Old Trafford in April. Glimpsed between the behemothic stands and also in the distance, almost every tree displays the frail effrontery of an English spring. In the foreground, though, yet another new building is under construction, one that will replace the demolished Red Rose suite and obscure the pleasant aspect. Three huge mechanical diggers are clearing the ground; their slow, angular and yet very effective motions remind one rather of the old Kent seamer, Norman Graham. But another new-ball bowler commands the attention of most on the ground this morning; he is 39 years young, fitter than most butchers’ dogs and he is playing his first game since January 9, when he blocked it out for a draw in the Sydney Test. Since then, he has been omitted from England’s party for the three-match series in the Caribbean, something that seemed unthinkable until the selectors thought it. All the same, rabbiting about officialdom has never been James Anderson’s preferred mode of communication; he reckons his bowling should get the message across. So there is a pleasing frisson of expectation as he marks out his run up at the end named after him on the ground where he first played for Lancashire 20 summers ago…Related

But cricket is rarely amenable to our expectations; that is one of its charms. And Australian cricketers are particularly ornery in this regard; that is one of their most endearing characteristics. So when it was confirmed that Anderson would be in Lancashire’s team against Gloucestershire today, Marcus Harris probably viewed it as just the sort of challenge he liked. It would be stretching things to say that the pair are old foes but Anderson dismissed Harris twice in the recent Ashes series and such things are rarely forgotten by either party. However, Chris Dent is one of the most underrated openers on the circuit and his straight drive off Anderson in the 14th over of the match was a highlight of the morning session in which the Gloucestershire openers scored 101 runs in 30 overs.Harris’s approach was especially refreshing. There were two fine boundaries in a Danny Lamb over and when Dane Vilas brought Matt Parkinson into the attack six overs before lunch, Harris deposited the final ball of his sixth over into the crowd at long-off. And it was a proper crowd, too. A couple of the stands at Emirates Old Trafford are shut to allow building work to take place but the pavilion and other stands were thickly populated. Some spectators will have turned up because it was the first day of the first-class season here; others will also have wanted to attend this evening’s AGM. But most of them, including the congenitally discontented, were surely cheered by an afternoon session in which six wickets fell for 69 runs, all of them to Lancashire’s pace attack but none of them to Anderson.James Anderson returned to action for Lancashire•Getty Images

That basic statistic illustrates why Vilas’s versatile team are one of the favourites to win the Championship this season. Half an hour after lunch Dent felt for a ball pushed across him by Hasan Ali and edged a catch to second slip, where Steven Croft hung on at the second grab. Three overs later Harris was caught down the leg side by Phil Salt off Saqib Mahmood for 67 and five balls later George Balderson wormed one between James Bracey’s bat and pad. Having lost three wickets for 14 runs in four overs, Gloucestershire proceeded to lose another three for 17 runs in the next ten, two of them to successive deliveries from Hasan, who is already a popular character in the Lancashire dressing room. Miles Hammond gave him assistance when a crass swish edged a catch to Salt but Tom Lace was undone first up by a ball that tailed in to the pads.Anderson, meanwhile, after conceding 21 runs, including a wide and four overthrows, off his first seven overs, found his range and leaked only nine more in as many overs to finish with nought from 30 from 16 overs. That might not satisfy a man whose perfectionism explains his success; yet he will probably not mind leaving this evening’s major plaudits to Hasan, who completed his first five-wicket return for Lancashire – indeed, he took 6 for 47 – when he dismissed three batsmen in the space of 17 balls late on a long-shadowed evening. Before that, however, Gloucestershire’s total had been hoisted well beyond 200 by a 65-run stand between Ryan Higgins, who invariably does something useful for the county in every game, and Zafar Gohar, who batted sensibly for his 27 runs until he tried to smack Parkinson over the Hilton Garden Hotel and was stumped for 27. This gave Salt his fourth victim of the day and completed another decent day’s work for a keeper who had not taken the gloves in a four-day game until last week’s match at Canterbury.Higgins was left unbeaten on 51 when last man Ajeet Singh Dale chipped Hasan to Josh Bohannon but what had been a satisfactory day for Lancashire was spoiled in the final over when Balderson was run out by Gohar’s direct hit from square leg. Luke Wells, who had rightly sent his partner back, held his arms out horizontally as though bemoaning the foolishness of youth, even in a glorious springtime.
