    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Now the manager himself dropped a hint regarding Chilwell's future while explaining his tactics for the upcoming 2024/25 campaign. The former Leicester City manager revealed that he plans to deploy inverted full-backs. While he spoke about players like captain Reece James, Malo Gusto, Marc Cucurella, and Renato Veiga who can play that role, the 44-year-old did not name the English defender.

  • WHAT ENZO MARESCA SAID

Speaking to reporters, the Chelsea coach said, "We won't necessarily invert the left. I have seen a lot of Reece James and he can do that, and we have been trying it. And Malo Gusto can do it as well. But so can Marc [Cucurella] and Renato [Veiga]. So we are trying both [sides]."

Maresca also exclusively spoke to football.london where he added, "In these weeks, we try different situations. We try [Reece] James inside. I watched his games [for Wigan Athletic on loan] against, I don't remember now, he was playing as a midfielder."

    WHAT NEXT?

Chilwell has been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer, however, it remains to be seen if the Red Devils are still interested in signing another defender after confirming the arrival of Leny Yoro last week. The West London club will be next seen in action on Wednesday as they take on Wrexham in their first pre-season friendly in the United States.

Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Kyle Jamieson to make Super Smash return

The trio took 31 wickets between them in the recent Tests against Pakistan

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Jan-2021New Zealand’s pace trio of Tim Southee, Trent Boult and Kyle Jamieson will all make a return to the Super Smash T20 tournament when Auckland take on the Northern Districts at Eden Park Outer Oval on Sunday. Both teams currently occupy the bottom two positions in the Super Smash table, but will be significantly boosted by the return of New Zealand’s premier fast bowlers to their respective sides, after the trio took 31 wickets between them across two Tests in the recent home series against Pakistan.Southee, a veteran of 189 T20 matches, last played for the Northern Districts in the Super Smash during the 2018-19 final, while Boult most recently featured in the competition back in December 2016.Jamieson, meanwhile, spent the whole of last season with Auckland. Two years ago, Jamieson took 6 for 7 against his current team while playing for Canterbury; those figures are still the best by a New Zealand bowler in T20 cricket. Jamieson will return to the Super Smash in red-hot form, having ended as the leading wicket-taker against Pakistan with 16 dismissals from four innings at an average of 11.68. In the second Test in Christchurch, Jamieson was named the Player of the Match after picking up a five-for in both innings.Southee and Boult will be joined at the Northern Districts by other New Zealand internationals like Tim Seifert, Mitchell Santner and Scott Kuggeleijn, while Auckland have the combined T20 international experience of Martin Guptill, Glenn Phillips and Mark Chapman to call upon.Auckland are yet to register a win in five attempts this season, while Northern District’s lone victory of the campaign came against Central Districts earlier this month.

Mane backed to sign new Liverpool deal

Former top flight goalkeeper Paddy Kenny believes Sadio Mane will sign a new Liverpool deal this summer after what he’s seen in recent weeks.

The Lowdown: Mane’s future up in the air

The Senegalese has returned to top form recently, scoring crucial goals against the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United, not to mention taking his tally for the season to 19 overall.

There is some concern surrounding Mane’s future at Liverpool, however, with his current deal expiring next year and a new contract not yet signed.

There appears to have been positive progress made in recent times, though, and the hope is that the situation is sorted in the near future.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-29/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Pundit confident of new deal

Speaking to Football Insider, Kenny, 43, dropped his verdict after seeing Mane’s red-hot recent form:

“He’s frighteningly good, isn’t he?”

“There is no way he’s leaving. Liverpool have one of the best attacks in the world and they don’t want to weaken that. He has proved how good he is over the last few weeks, not that we needed anymore proof.

“He’s one of the ones who is out of contract next summer so you would think Liverpool will want to tie him down with some of the goals he’s been scoring.

“I think that will get sorted. They want to keep Salah and Mane, those kinds of world-class players.”

The Verdict: No-brainer for Liverpool

There have been times when Mane has dropped below his absolute peak level, but his recent form is proof that he still has a huge amount to offer.

While 30 used to be seen as ‘old’ for a footballer, the likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Robert Lewandowski and Karim Benzema are proof that players can go well into their 30s now at the very highest level.

For that reason, giving Mane a new deal is a no-brainer for Liverpool, with the African superstar capable of being a force for three or four more years, at least.

After starting in his La Liga debut against Osasuna last week, former Liverpool star Alexander-Arnold found himself on the bench in Real Madrid's second game of the La Liga season against Real Oviedo on Sunday evening. Alonso decided to hand the right-back slot to seasoned campaigner Carvajal in a surprise call.

Rodrygo did not feature at all against Osasuna despite being in the matchday squad, which fuelled speculation regarding his future at Santiago Bernabeu. The Brazilian is being tipped to leave the club amid reported interest from Premier League giants Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal. Alonso, however, has put the Selecao star in his starting lineup against Oviedo, with Vinicius Junior and Brahim Diaz also dropping to the bench alongside Alexander-Arnold.

Robiul Islam Robi puts Beximco Dhaka on the board

Offspinner takes 4 for 20 to restrict Fortune Barishal to 108, while Gazi Group Chattogram’s one-run win kept their perfect record intact

Beximco Dhaka collected their first points in the Bangabandhu T20 Cup, beating Fortune Barishal by seven wickets. Dhaka made it a little tight towards the end of their 109-run chase, but Yasir Ali settled the conest with two sixes in the penultimate over to complete the win.Dhaka were put into a strong position after Robiul Islam Robi’s 4 for 20 helped them restrict Barishal to 108 for 8. Robi, the 30-year old offspinner, trapped Saif Hassan lbw after the batsman missed a sweep in the fifth over. Next ball, Parvez Hossain Emon mistimed one to long-on, before Afif Hossain joined him back in the dugout by offering catch to long-off, in the next over. When the captain Mushfiqur Rahim brought Robi back for his last over in the 12th over, he had Tamim Iqbal, batting on 31 with three fours and a six, caught at the midwicket boundary.Barishal found it hard to keep Robi away from the game even after his spell was over. The next two dismissed batsmen, Irfan Sukkur and Towhid Hridoy, who top-scored with a run-a-ball 33, were both caught by Robi.Apart from Robi’s four-wicket haul, left-arm paceman Shafiqul Islam took two wickets while Nayeem Hasan and Rubel Hossain had one apiece. Barishal finished on 108 for 8 in 20 overs, a total well below the average score for teams batting first in the afternoon games during this competition.Dhaka took a steady approach in their chase, especially after losing Robi and Mohammad Naim in 6.4 overs. Rahim held it together with his unbeaten 23, and after Tanzid Hasan fell for 22, it was left to Yasir Ali to take them home. He struck three fours and two sixes in his unbeaten 30-ball 44.Liton Das slammed a 53-ball 78•BCB

In the other game, Gazi Group Chattogram kept their 100 per cent record in the Bangabandhu T20 Cup by the skin of their teeth, thanks to a one-run win against Minister Group Rajshahi. Mustafizur Rahman managed to squeeze in a low full-toss on the last ball, off which four runs were needed, as Rony Talukdar, who had struck a six and inside-edged a four off the previous two balls, could only take two to long-on.Rajshahi would rue the several chances they got to topple Chattogram, particularly in the penultimate over when Farhad Reza had Shoriful Islam’s number, carting him for a four and a six, leaving them with 15 off eight balls. But Shoriful had Farhad caught at the long-on boundary, and then gave away a single leg-bye to finish the 19th over.Mustafizur removed Nurul Hasan off the first ball of the last over. Rony played out two dot balls before hitting him for a straight six and a lucky four past the wicketkeeper, before Mustafizur had the last laugh.Rajshahi’s chase started quickly as Najmul Hossain Shanto and Anisul Islam Emon added 56 for the first wicket. Shanto fell in the sixth over, caught down the leg-side after a 14-ball 25. But even Emon’s best efforts couldn’t quite keep the same scoring rate, as it dropped from 9.88 in the first wicket stand, to a more sedentary 6.94 during the 6.2 overs of the second wicket stand.Mohammad Ashraful’s 20 off 19 balls certainly didn’t help Rajshahi’s cause. Mahedi Hasan struck back with two fours and a brilliantly pulled six off Mustafizur Rahman, but when he was adjudged lbw in the 17th over, Chattogram regained the foothold, only just.Chattogram’s 176-5 came mainly due to yet another great start from Liton Das and Soumya Sarkar. They put together their third 50-plus stand, when they added 62 for the first wicket, in 7.2 overs. Soumya made 34 off 25 balls with two sixes and four boundaries, before hitting one straight down the long-on fielder’s throat. The next injection of scoring came when Mosaddek Hossain joined Liton at the crease in the 13th over. He blasted two sixes and as many fours in his 28-ball 42, while Liton remained unbeaten on a 53-ball 78 that contained nine fours and a six.Pace bowler Mukidul Islam took three wickets while Farhad Reza and Emon took one each.

'The guys are very disappointed and a bit angry' – Chris Morris

His captain Faf du Plessis blamed the batsmen for their defeat against India

Andrew Fidel Fernando in Southampton05-Jun-2019″Stranger things have happened,” allrounder Chris Morris said. Following three defeats to begin the 2019 World Cup, this is what South Africa have to cling to, if they are to progress to the semi-finals.ALSO READ – Bumrah, Rohit and Chahal give India winning startHaving arrived in the UK with the aim of winning at least six of their round-robin matches, they are now faced with winning six in a row to make that a reality. It is possible that even five wins could be enough to make it into the knockouts, or in an absolute best-case scenario, four. But although they’ve got the two favourites out of the way, they’ve still got to get past Australia, New Zealand, a possibly resurgent Pakistan (who is to tell if their upswing lasts), and West Indies.”The guys are very disappointed and a bit angry, which they are allowed to be,” Morris said after the loss to India. “We will sort that out in our heads tonight and when the sun comes up tomorrow we will go back to the drawing board and take on our next opponent. It’s pretty simple – win the next six and crack on. Maybe we need a bit of luck to go our way.”Captain Faf du Plessis, who before the the match, spoke of his team as being one that already needed a psychological lift, has a tougher road ahead than practically any other captain in the competition presently. He blamed his batting order for the defeat.”It’s a change-room that is hurting,” du Plessis said. “We’re trying to make sure that we keep fighting, but we’re still making mistakes all the time. Today was once again a great example of someone not batting through. That’s what you need in England. You need one guy batting through. And then if you can get a total, your bowlers can try and put some pressure on. But to have so many 30s and 40s is not acceptable.”The only period of the game in which South Africa seemed to have a glimmer of a chance was the early overs of India’s chase, as Kagiso Rabada delivered a furious spell of quick bowling. Twice he could have had Rohit Sharma – the eventual centurion – out, when short balls ballooned in the air off the batsman’s bat and glove. One of those balls fell into space, however, and the other was spilled by a diving du Plessis, to reprieve Rohit on 1.”He was a champion today,” du Plessis said of Rabada. “He was extremely unlucky. I’ve never seen so many balls just fall in different areas. But sometimes, that’s how the game goes. When you’re not playing your best cricket, little 50-50 things go against you. We’ve got to try and make sure we turn those 50-50 chances towards us. But he was unbelievable today.”

Heather Knight talks up England's depth ahead of India ODIs

England captain hopes to exploit Mandhana’s weakness, having seen her closely during the WBBL

Annesha Ghosh in Mumbai21-Feb-20191:22

Opportunity for youngsters to step up and perform – Mithali Raj

England have more depth than India, a point captain Heather Knight touched upon ahead of the ODI series in Mumbai that counts towards the ICC Women’s Championship. They have proved it twice against India in recent times – none more famously than in the Women’s World Cup final at Lord’s in July 2017. England triumphed again, in a different format, in the semi-final of the World T20 in November.”We’ve got a lot of depth,” Knight said on the eve of the first ODI at Wankhede Stadium. “The ODI cricket we’ve played in the last couple of years, including the World Cup in England, has been very good. We have got performances from different players. We have got [some] inexperience [but also] a group that has been around for a while as well.”We’ve got quite a settled batting line-up and each of the batters in the top six or seven are match-winners. Hopefully a lot more players can step up, as they have done in the last two years.”By contrast, India are thin in the middle order, as exposed during the limited-overs series in New Zealand (India won the ODIs 2-1, but were blanked 3-0 in the T20Is). They now have a big void to fill as vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been ruled out of the series with an ankle injury. This is the first time since 2010, after 87 ODIs, that India will be without Harmanpreet in the format.1:22

Opportunity for youngsters to step up and perform – Mithali Raj

While Knight believes “any team in the world would miss” a batsman of her caliber, Mithali Raj, her counterpart, has suggested it is an opportunity for the younger players to step up.”Honestly, they should go about their business as they have been, because Jemimah [Rodrigues] and Smriti [Mandhana] gave us great starts in the last series. Our middle-order wasn’t tested much,” Raj said. “Yes, Harman’s not there in the side because of an injury, but we as a bating unit should be taking the responsibility to play that role of getting the team along.Knight knows India are no pushovers, and is gearing up for a challenge to stifle Mandhana, her WBBL team-mate and India’s most prolific run-scorer in the last 12 months.”I have obviously played With Smriti in Hobart [Hurricanes], very recently. She played in my team, so I know her very well,” she said. “I know she’s a very good player, and having seen a lot of her, obviously, it gives us the chance to look at her weaknesses as well, and try and figure out how we’re going to exploit them in the series.”England will be buoyed by the return of wicketkeeper-batsman Sarah Taylor and fast-bowling allrounder Katherine Brunt, two notable absentees from their World T20 squad. Knight, quite obviously, was delighted to have players of their ability and experience available.”The experience they bring to the side, obviously their skill level to the pitch is invaluable to us,” she said. “We’re really excited to have them back, and see how they go. They are both excited to be here as well. They bring different things to the group. They both really have a positive influence on the team, and the set-up in general.”Getty ImagesLast year, Nagpur offered turning tracks when England toured for three ODIs, which they won 2-1. In Mumbai, the series will be played on two adjacent surfaces – one grassy and the other one on a belter. That said, much of England’s bowling plans will revolve around Sophie Ecclestone, their leading wicket-taker during the ODI series last year. Ecclestone has since been awarded a central contract.”I think Sophie Ecclestone bowled really well last year in India,” Knight said. “She sort of emerged on that trip, and has been the leader of our attack. She’s been outstanding, and she keeps developing all the time. So I’d really like to see how she goes.”A key player missing from England’s squad from their last tour of India is the now-retired offspinner Danielle Hazell. Knight was hopeful that Hazell’s like-for-like replacement, Laura Marsh will be able to plug that hole and, in turn, cement her place in the starting XI.”We miss Danni, but we’ve got a fitting replacement in Laura Marsh,” Knight said. “She’s been around for a long time, experienced in these conditions and how to bowl in these conditions. I’m really excited to see how she goes. She has a good opportunity to be our main offspinner.”With Danni around, Laura and her were constantly competing against each other – a one in, one out sort of thing. Laura’s now got that chance to be our only offspinner and really stamp her mark on it.”

Lynn wants Australia to 'throw the first punch'

Chris Lynn believes the upcoming T20 matches can help Australia kickstart their season following the ODI series defeat

Daniel Brettig16-Nov-2018Chris Lynn only knows one way, so it was little surprise to hear him declare that the key to the rest of Australia’s summer is to start “throwing the first punch” so as to “drive the game” against South Africa and India, starting with the one-off T20 on the Gold Coast on Saturday night. This is easier said than done, of course, with Australia’s performances so far characterised more by uncertainty and struggle rather than crispness of movement and clarity of thought. When Lynn was promoted to open in the decisive ODI in Hobart on Sunday, his attempt to “throw the first punch” resulted in an edge and a duck at the hands of Dale Steyn.”We didn’t get off to the greatest starts in our batting unit,” Lynn said on the Gold Coast. “Hopefully we can do that tomorrow night and I suppose we were always just chasing the game rather than driving the game, so first and foremost we want to be out there throwing the first punch and putting them on the back foot, because then if you drive the game it makes life so much easier, not only as a batting group but for your captain, for your bowlers.Du Plessis flags 2020 exit from international T20

South Africa’s captain Faf du Plessis has signalled that the World T20 in Australia in late 2020 will be his last international assignment in the shortest format, as he pondered the difficulties posed by domestic leagues in terms of having the best players available to play all three forms of the game.
“The T20 World Cup is in Australia and that’s not too far away, so hopefully we’ll be back for that and that will probably be my last international tour I would think,” du Plessis said in Brisbane. “From our perspective, T20 cricket for us over the last two or three years has been a case of bringing in the young guys, giving them an opportunity, so we never really play our strongest XI, which isn’t great for the international game.
“Football [has] a situation where it’s playing for your clubs and then there’s an international tournament. In my opinion that’s a good place for T20 cricket to be in, because you shouldn’t be trying to compete with the leagues because they are so strong at the moment. And I can see the same with other teams – it’s almost never their strongest teams, and fans come to watch the best players play. That’s where I see the game moving forward, but the T20 World Cup in 2020 is something I’m really looking forward to … that will probably be the last tournament for me.”

“If we can start that momentum through this T20 series, I think the Test series will be crucial and quite challenging against India, so if we can build momentum early in the T20 format, build guys’ confidence and belief that we’re still the best in the world, I think it’s going to be huge and hopefully we can start that tomorrow night.”Despite low scores in Perth and Hobart, and a missed opportunity in Adelaide where he was unable to resist the temptation to keep attacking Kagiso Rabada after a quartet of blows to the boundary, Lynn stressed that he would not be changing his approach.”I don’t think I’ll change at all to be honest,” he said. “I feel like I’m hitting the ball quite well, runs haven’t been there, but just because you miss out in a couple of innings you don’t change your whole game plan. To me it’s all about keeping my head still, hitting through the line of the ball and trying to do that to the best of my ability.”In the T20 format of the game, you’re going to come off some nights and other nights you’re going to fail, that’s just the way it goes in the shorter format. Hopefully tomorrow night it goes my way. The first game I was [nervous] just because it was my first game for Australia in a long time, but after the first 10 minutes the nerves were settled for me and it’s just a game no matter what format it is.”It’s a white ball coming down at you, it swings a little bit here and there, but I want to make sure I’m having fun, that’s the main thing. I’m certainly doing that at the moment, even though results haven’t gone our way. Every time you step out on the ground you want to contribute and do as best you can. I still feel I’ve got a lot to offer in international cricket, the dominoes haven’t lined up yet but I think it’s not far off.”As for the challenge posed by South Africa, Lynn said the quality of Steyn, Rabada and Lungi Ngidi in particular meant he was learning a lot in a short space of time. South Africa’s captain Faf du Plessis has been blunt in stating that extra pace provided by Steyn and Rabada was the key to stopping Lynn from causing the sort of havoc he has regularly inflicted on opponents in the BBL.”Two of the best bowlers in the world, Dale Steyn and Rabada, and someone like Ngidi hasn’t given us anything to hit so far and has executed his role to a tee,” Lynn said. “They’ve got a couple of classy spinners as well. That’s why it’s international cricket, there’s no easy overs, no easy games, so I’m really enjoying that challenge.”We haven’t got the results on the board and I haven’t personally, but I’m loving every minute of it. You work out very quickly who you are as a player and where you’ve got to get better. It’s going to take a while to adjust, but the change room’s happy and we’re working our backsides off.”

BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary questions CoA's handling of Johri allegations

Amitabh Choudhary, the BCCI’s acting secretary, has asked the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) to resolve the rift within it over the handling of the allegations of harassment against CEO Rahul Johri. The two members of the CoA, chairman Vinod Rai and Diana Edulji, had disagreed over the way ahead in the issue, and Choudhary has alleged that the procedure eventually followed was improper on several grounds. On Thursday night, the CoA sent out a press release announcing that a three-member independent inquiry committee would investigate the allegations against Johri. The release also detailed the disagreement between Rai, who felt an independent inquiry was necessary, and Edulji, who had wanted Johri to resign or have his contract terminated. In an email to the CoA, which ESPNcricinfo has accessed, Choudhary has accused the CoA of dealing with the allegations in a “cavalier manner” and questioned the “days of inaction” between Johri submitting his explanation to the CoA (October 20) and the setting up of the independent panel.Choudhary also accused Rai of overstepping his powers as chairman and overriding the views of Edulji, the CoA’s other member.”The Committee of Administrators was constituted by the Hon’ble Supreme Court as a four member body and one of the members of the said committee was made the chairman to convene its meetings and preside over them,” Choudhary’s email said. “The position of the Chairman was only that of first among equals and no additional or superior powers had or have been conferred upon the Chairman by the Hon’ble Supreme Court.”Presently, the committee comprises two members and both members are equal in status for all purposes. That being so, the Learned Chairman has no power or authority to prevail over the views of the other esteemed member and take decisions unilaterally on behalf of the CoA or on behalf of the BCCI.”Given the divergence of views between Rai and Edulji, Choudhary said the only way forward was for the CoA to refer the issue to either the Supreme Court or the BCCI’s general body.Choudhary said there was no explanation in the CoA’s press release of how the inquiry committee was constituted and who chose its three members. Given that she disagreed with the need for an independent inquiry, Choudhary suggested Edulji could “hardly have had anything to do with” setting up the committee. This, Choudhary said, made the inquiry committee “further suspect”.Of the three members of the inquiry committee, two – Rakesh Sharma, a former judge of the Allahabad High Court, and PC Sharma, a former director of the Central Bureau of Investigation – are over 70 years old. This, Choudhary said, disqualified them from being part of such a committee, under the BCCI’s new constitution.”A committee stricken with such infirmities from its inception is hardly expected to dispense any real justice and is bound to be seen with great suspicion,” the email said. “The undersigned most humbly desires that a solution be immediately be found in view of the points noted above.”
