Dunith Wellalage, the Under-19 captain, is also in line for a debut after making the 21-man squad

Several familiar faces, as well as a couple of new ones – most notably the highly-rated Sri Lanka Under-19 captain Dunith Wellalage – have been included in Sri Lanka’s 21-man squad for the upcoming ODI series against Australia. Dasun Shanaka will lead the side.Danushka Gunathilaka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Niroshan Dickwella and Wanindu Hasaranga all return, while there are also recalls for allrounder Lahiru Madushanka and fast bowler Asitha Fernando. Alongside Wellalage, 28-year-old right-arm seamer Pramod Madushan is in line for a debut.Making way are fast-bowling trio Nuwan Pradeep, Chamika Gunasekara and Shiran Fernando, wicketkeeper-batter Minod Bhanuka and spin-bowling allrounder Kamindu Mendis. Aside from the veteran Pradeep, the exclusion of the other four were largely expected as they had been included as part of a very inexperienced side that toured Zimbabwe in Sri Lanka’s last ODI series in January. The return of Gunathilaka, de Silva, Rajapaksa and Dickwella bolster a batting unit that already includes Kusal Mendis, Pathum Nissanka, Charith Asalanka, Dinesh Chandimal and Shanaka. The squad is also not short of genuine allrounders, with Hasaranga and Madushanka adding to the likes of Chamika Karunaratne and Ramesh Mendis. Then there is Wellalage. The general public might not have heard much of the 19-year-old prior to this year, but his performances at the recently concluded Under-19 World Cup, where he put in a string of match-winning performances with both bat and ball, certainly made many sit up and take notice. The tournament saw the spin-bowling allrounder end as its leading wicket-taker with 17 scalps across six games, while with the bat he racked up 264 runs at an average of 44. More impressive though was his temperament, especially when batting deep with the lower order to take his side through to victory.Regular game time in a series against Australia might be a lot to expect of a player with just 17 first-class and List A matches behind him, but it wouldn’t be surprising if the Sri Lanka think tank opts to throw him in sooner rather than later.A debut for Sri Lanka’s other potential debutant, Madushan, however might be less likely with Dushmantha Chameera, Nuwan Thushara and Fernando – included on the back of an impressive Test series against Bangladesh – ahead of him in the seam-bowling pecking order. The spin-bowling contingent meanwhile is also well stocked, with the first choice pair of Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana supplemented up by the resurgent wrist spin of Jeffrey Vandersay and the left-arm orthodox of Praveen Jayawickrama. The five-match series gets underway on June 14 in Pallekele.Squad: Dasun Shanaka (capt), Pathum Nissanka, Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Dinesh Chandimal, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Niroshan Dickwella, Wanindu Hasaranga, Chamika Karunaratne, Dushmantha Chameera, Asitha Fernando, Nuwan Thushara, Ramesh Mendis, Maheesh Theekshana, Praveen Jayawickrama, Jeffrey Vandersay, Lahiru Madushanka, Dunith Wellalage, Pramod Madushan
Noni Madueke has staked his claim for a regular starting role under Enzo Maresca in recent weeks, starring in Chelsea’s mammoth victory over Wolves last weekend.
The 22-year-old registered a second-half hat-trick in the 6-2 win, producing his best display for the Blues since his move from PSV Eindhoven back in January 2023.
It comes just weeks after he was strongly touted with a move to join fellow Premier League side Newcastle United, with a deal reportedly going as far as the winger agreeing personal terms with the Magpies.
After his sensational performance, it’s highly unlikely that the Englishman will depart Stamford Bridge before Friday’s deadline, showcasing he still has the ability to be a key first-team member despite his lack of opportunities last season.
However, Madueke could be joined in West London by a plethora of players, with the Blues still working tirelessly to make new additions before the closure of the window.
Chelsea’s pursuit of Jadon Sancho
It’s safe to say Raheem Sterling’s time at Chelsea has been a disaster, with the former England international failing to justify his £50m fee that saw him join the club from Manchester City.
The 29-year-old, who is the club’s highest earner on a staggering £325k-per-week as per Capology, has been left out of Maresca’s Premier League squad for the 2024/25 campaign, signalling the end of his time in West London.
He’s previously been linked with a move to join Newcastle, but recent reports claim he could be involved in a potential swap deal that could see Jadon Sancho join the Blues from Manchester United.
The former Borussia Dortmund star spent the second half of last season back on loan at the Bundesliga side, but despite fixing his relationship with Erik ten Hag, he looks set for his own exit before the transfer deadline.
Sancho cost the Red Devils £73m back in 2021, but after just 12 goals in 82 appearances, he could be set to swap Old Trafford for Stamford Bridge.
However, given his lack of impact in Manchester, the Blues would be best to steer clear of any deal for the 24-year-old, potentially turning their attention to another player they’ve targeted in the past.
Why Chelsea should move for Bakayoko instead of Sancho
In previous months, the Blues have been linked with a move to repeat their Madueke capture with the signing of PSV’s Belgian winger Johan Bakayoko, after the youngster set the Eredivisie alight last season.
The 21-year-old registered 21 combined goals and assists in his 33 league appearances during 2023/24, prompting interest from Chelsea – with a £35m fee touted for his services.
He would be a much more valuable addition than Sancho, with Bakayoko blowing the Englishman out of the water in numerous key attacking aspects last season.
The “dangerous” forward, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, completed more progressive carries per 90, whilst achieving a higher take-on success rate – showcasing his ability to take the ball into attacking areas and beating the opposition.

He was also more of a goal threat than the United man, averaging over four times the amount of shots per 90, whilst averaging three times the number of efforts on target – potentially providing Maresca with added firepower in the final third.
Whilst a deal for Sancho would potentially see the club finally shift Sterling off the books, a move for Bakayoko would undoubtedly hand the club more quality in attacking areas.
Johan Bakayoko for PSV
After such erratic dealings in the market, it’s crucial the club identify the right players to take the club back to the heights they once achieved, with the Belgian having all of the qualities to succeed in the Premier League.
Not only would it allow the club to repeat the successful capture of Madueke, but the pair could also potentially form an excellent partnership at Stamford Bridge and lead Maresca's hunt for a top-four finish this season.

Son still holds Kane in the highest regard, telling when asked – as a former Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen star – whether he offered any words of advice before his ex-strike partner headed to the Bundesliga: “I think, still the German league is one of the best leagues also and when we’re talking about Harry, I don’t have to give him any advice. For me, he’s the best.”

The South Korea international went on to say when asked where Kane ranks among the world’s best frontmen: “Because he's my friend, obviously you get some bonus points. He will always be [in] my top three. It doesn't matter what happens, he will always be in my top three. Especially [as] we had such an amazing connection and played together [for] so long and we combined together for so many goals and yeah, having this kind of a striker is always a dream.”

The Gunners might be forced to raid the January transfer market after they lost two of their wide players, Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling, to injuries last week. While Saka has been ruled out for several weeks after he tore his hamstring in the club's 5-1 win over Crystal Palace last Saturday, Sterling picked up a knee injury.

The French forward has fallen out of favour under manager Luis Enrique, having appeared in 14 matches across all competitions and clocking just 453 minutes on the pitch this season. The 26-year-old wouldn't mind leaving in January even if it is only on a short-term loan to get more game time.

WHAT NEXT FOR ARSENAL?
Arteta's men, who are trailing league leaders Liverpool by six points, will next face Ipswich Town on Friday.
Pat Cummins has been named Australia’s 47th Test captain and will lead them in the Ashes after the resignation of Tim Paine. There are a number of key challenges that he is set to face in the role.History of Australian bowling captainsCummins is the first Australia fast bowler to captain the team since Ray Lindwall led them in one Test against India in 1956. Richie Benaud was the last frontline bowler of any description to lead Australia’s Test team with the legspinning allrounder captaining 28 times, the last of which was in 1963. Australia, as with the game as a whole, have had a preference for batting captains although globally there have been many examples of bowling captains having success in the Test match arena. The most recent being Jason Holder who led West Indies 37 times, taking 100 wickets at 26.76 with seven five-wicket hauls and a 10-wicket haul, not to mention his two Test hundreds in that time, including 202 not out against England. Cummins himself acknowledged the challenge of being a bowling captain, hence his preference to have Steven Smith as his vice-captain.”There’s a couple of more unknowns about having a bowling captain and that’s why I think from the outset, I was absolutely determined if I was captain to have someone like Steve as vice-captain next to me,” he said.Related

New Test captain Cummins was 'absolutely determined' to have Smith as his deputy
Lack of captaincy experienceCummins has been a professional cricketer for over a decade and played 252 matches across all three formats, but the extent of his captaincy experience is just four 50-over Marsh Cup games for New South Wales last season. Nathan Lyon gave Cummins a ringing endorsement for his brief captaincy spell on Thursday and Cummins was unfazed by his lack of experience and being rushed into the role.”I’ve been vice-captain for two or three years,” he said. “Although I haven’t had too much experience as captain it was always in the back of the mind that this might pop up at some stage. Yeah, it’s right at the start of an Ashes series, but I feel like I’ve been really well equipped.”Pat Cummins’ only captaincy experience has come in domestic one-day cricket•Getty Images
Workload managementWhen to bowl, how much to bowl, and more importantly when to take himself out of the attack will be arguably Cummins’ greatest challenge as a Test captain. It was something that certainly challenged Andrew Flintoff who was the talisman in England’s attack when he took over the captaincy much like Cummins is now. Flintoff bowled himself 51 overs in an innings and 68 in a match after enforcing the follow-on against Sri Lanka at Lord’s in 2006, when he had a five-man attack at his disposal and the added part-time support of Paul Collingwood. Cummins has a game plan in place already to mitigate against such situations.”I think that’s going to be one of the main things that I have to be aware of. And that’s why I’ll be leaning on people like Steven, plenty of senior guys around. I’m not out there by myself. There’s plenty of people lean on. You know, David Warner’s there, Nathan Lyon, Starcy, Joshy Hazlewood. There’s a lot of experience in the side. Sometimes I might need to listen to what they’ve got to say more than what I’ve got to say myself.”There are also concerns about Cummins being captain in an era of bowlers being rested and rotated for workload management reasons but those fears may be unfounded with Cummins. Despite the fact he suffered multiple injuries and missed large chunks of cricket in the early part of his career, since returning to the Test side in 2017 Cummins has played 33 of a possible 35 Test matches, missing only one tour, the two-Test series against Pakistan in the UAE 2018. He has twice played all five Tests of an Ashes series and completed three four-Test series. Cummins believes he will only rest in limited-overs cricket and as a result, is comfortable that he is unlikely to captain Australia’s limited-overs teams on a permanent basis.Risk of too many chefsA byproduct of Cummins’ role, inexperience, and desire for Smith to be his deputy could cause issues in terms of the chain of command. The vice-captain has traditionally been a subservient role requiring subtle leadership and deference to the captain. Cummins made no secret of the fact he wants to be a collaborative captain and wants Smith to be prepared to step in to make tactical decisions while Cummins is out on the field, particularly when he is bowling. This will be a rare dynamic and requires very strong relationships and trust to work well.”I think it potentially could look different to what you’ve seen partnerships work in the past,” Cummins said. “There’ll be times in the field where I’ll throw to Steve and you’ll see Steve moving fielders around maybe doing bowling changes, taking a bit more of an elevated vice-captaincy role and that’s what I really want, that’s what I’ve asked and I’m really glad Steve’s happy with that as well. So we’ll nut out how exactly that works, but it’s going to be a real collaborative approach.”New partnership: how will Pat Cummins and Steven Smith work together?•Getty Images
Burden of expectationAustralia’s last two Test captains have been left their post in ignominy. Smith has returned as vice-captain but the irony of how it has come about will be lost on very few. It is a well-worn joke in Australia that the Test captain is regarded as the second-highest office in the land, but the reality is that there is often more reverence for the Test captain than the Prime Minister and the moral standards in some ways appear, rightly or wrongly, to be higher based on the experiences of Smith and Paine. The burden of perfection is already on the shoulders of Cummins but he is prepared for what it is to come.”That doesn’t worry me too much,” he said. “I know with the role comes added scrutiny. But for 10 or 11 years I have been playing for Australia in the public eye. I won’t always get things right. I’m certainly not perfect. There’s going to be things that pop up. But as long as I can sleep at night I’m really comfortable with the responsibility.”

Shane Watson has admitted that he finds batting first a greater strain and his struggles at The Oval reiterated the problem for Australia
Daniel Brettig at The Oval01-Jul-2012When asked by George Plimpton which Olympic sport he would have tried his hand at, former US president Bill Clinton offered the decathlon. “It was because,” Plimpton said, “You had ten disciplines that you could concentrate on … And it’s quite evident that he has the ability to do it, too. This is a man who is able to stand and give a speech and not have you-know-who popping up in the back of his head.” The you-know-who Plimpton spoke of was, of course, Monica Lewinsky.Clinton was considered a master of compartmentalisation, a popular term among psychologists and cricketers. The ability to momentarily forget all the other various tasks, issues and worries to concentrate most clearly on the one immediately at hand is an attribute sought by many in the game, not all with the same success. Captains must divorce their leadership from their batting or bowling, allrounders one discipline from the other. All players must forget their batting or bowling when they stand in the field. At The Oval, Australia’s pursuit of a truly testing total for England was undermined by Shane Watson allowing his batting to become clouded. Not for the first time.Australia’s innings began at a healthy clip, and continued to run smoothly despite the loss of David Warner and Peter Forrest. This was because Watson made a fast start, and kept pinging boundaries to keep the run-rate up and prevent the field or the bowlers from closing in completely. At the end of 20 overs, the visitors were 100 for 2, with Watson 53 from 52 balls – all set to go on to a match-shaping tally. But from there, his innings petered out. The loss of his captain Michael Clarke did not help, but Watson failed to find gaps for boundaries, or singles, and was becalmed in the company of George Bailey, who battled to get established at the crease with no outlet for the pressure England began to impose. The stagnation of the Australia innings meant that by the time Watson was dismissed for 66, having taken another 28 balls for those 13 runs, the tally had advanced just 28 runs in 11 overs, leaving far too much ground for the middle order to catch up.Watson’s final act was a frustrated heave at Graeme Swann, held in the deep by Steven Finn, a moment that felt inevitable in the context of an innings now mired in mid-overs mud. It was indicative also, of a wider theme in Watson’s game. He has admitted before that when batting first, he starts to worry about the physical toll of batting given the bowling he may have to do later, and that these thoughts inhibit his ability to keep up his earlier momentum. Only once has he made a century when batting first in an ODI. When chasing he has coshed five.
“Batting first you tend to be out in the heat and I know I might have to bowl ten overs, so it’s physically more demanding”Shane Watson
“I know in my mind that that is the case,” Watson said last year of his greater comfort batting second. “One, it does take a bit of pressure off, I suppose, to know the exact score you’ve got to chase … But alongside that, as well, batting first you tend to be out in the heat, and I know I might have to bowl ten overs. So it’s also physically more demanding batting first, for me anyway, so that’s always in the back of my mind as well.”As demonstrated by that admission, Watson is an admirably frank and transparent character. As an allrounder, he is perennially conflicted. His role in the Australia side has changed too many times to count, batting anywhere from No. 1 to No. 7, and his bowling running the gamut from taking the new ball to not using it at all. A history of injuries has forced Watson to think very carefully about his body and the limits of its exertion – he is a rare cricketer to travel the world with his own personal physio. This background has made Watson into a most versatile cricketer and a critical part of Michael Clarke’s team. But it has also served to entrench patterns into his cricket as well as his preparation for it. Watson worries about his workload every match he plays, and it has long seeped into the way he performs. Ten years into his ODI career, Watson is a far more accomplished batsman when the team bats second, his bowling duties out of the way.The disparity between between first innings and second innings is so vast as to be worth noting by Clarke, as well as Australia’s coach, Mickey Arthur. Across 83 innings batting first, Watson averages a mediocre 32.97, with the aforementioned one century and 16 half-centuries. But when batting second his mean shoots up to 57.10 across 50 innings, five times reaching 100, with 12 half-centuries. Moreover, his strike-rate improves. For Australia to get the most out of Watson, and to salvage something from an ODI series against England that is now slipping well away from their grasp, they need to find a way of closing that gap. It is difficult to tell whether doing so requires the input of a psychologist, a physio or even a former US president, but Australia’s standing as the top-ranked 50-over team in the world will remain at risk so long as the performances of their most destructive player can oscillate so wildly.
