Despite his more than decent wages, Foden has seven City players ahead of him in the top-earners list at the club.

At the top sits Norwegian striker Erling Haaland, while Belgian maestro Kevin De Bruyne follows him in second position.

Midfielders Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish take the third and fourth spot with identical earnings, while new signing Omar Marmoush caps off the top five earners at number five.

Smeed 94 powers Somerset to Blast glory in record 195-run chase

Somerset came out on top in a clash of the T20 Blast titans, pulling off the highest successful run-chase in the competition’s final to overcome Hampshire and claim a record-equalling third title under the Edgbaston lights. Will Smeed blazed 94 off 58 to get Somerset most of the way there, before Lewis Gregory obliterated the tension in the stands by hammering a four and two sixes in five balls to seal victory with an over to spare.Hampshire, whose total of 194 for 6 had been underpinned by 85 off 48 balls from young opener Toby Albert, seemed to be in control as the requirement for Somerset ticked beyond two runs per ball just past the halfway mark. But Scott Currie’s drop of Sean Dickson was to prove crucial, as a fourth-wicket partnership of 88 off 51 dragged the contest back Somerset’s way.Having been asked to bat, Albert and James Vince made up for the early of loss of Chris Lynn with a stand of 97 in 59 balls to put Hampshire in a formidable position. Albert, in particular, produced some audacious shot-making – including four reverse-hit boundaries in the space of six balls – as Somerset were asked to make the highest-ever score in the final of the competition.Their start was given the required fizz by Tom Kohler-Cadmore, who hit one enormous six over the roof of the Hollies Stand and out of the ground, and although Hampshire frequently seemed one good over from shutting the chase down, Smeed and then Dickson – the linchpin in Somerset’s 2023 Blast success – kept landing timely blows. With both teams making their 11th Finals Day appearances, it was always likely to be a tussle for the ages.Victory for Somerset ended the hoodoo for winners of the first semi-final, as they became the first team since Worcestershire in 2018 to lift the trophy after kicking their heels during the second game. It also marked a fifth consecutive triumph for the South Group – though that was confirmed earlier in the day by the exits of Lancashire and Northamptonshire.Toby Albert played some audacious reverse-ramps in his 85•Getty Images

TKC lands first blow, Baker hits back

Batting second on a surface that was being used for the third time in the day meant Somerset knew they had to get a shuffle on. Smeed picked up boundaries in each of the first two overs – Sonny Baker also contributing with five wides from his first ball – and Kohler-Cadmore then took up the cudgels, hammering his fourth ball, a pull off Chris Wood, over the heads of those in the Hollies and out towards the River Rea.Scott Currie’s first delivery also flew all the way, as Kohler-Cadmore unleashed a scything uppercut over deep third. Baker returned, switching to the Pavilion End, only to be thrashed through the covers. But the Hampshire fast bowler showed why he is on England’s radar by splattering Kohler-Cadmore’s stumps with an 88mph yorker to end the opening stand at 46.

Smeed carries the fight

Smeed had ticked along to 18 off 15 but responded to the loss of Kohler-Cadmore by twice cracking James Fuller through point at the start of the sixth. Tom Abell departed for a duck in the same over, Somerset finishing the powerplay on 55 for 2, but James Rew picked off early boundaries as Smeed bedded into the middle overs.Currie’s return in the 10th saw the back of Rew, chopping on to his stumps, and Hampshire looked to squeeze through the nous of South Africa spinner Bjorn Fortuin. The required rate was approaching 12 an over, but Smeed kept Somerset in touch with back-to-back fours off Fortuin and then a thump off Howell. Then came the crucial drop of Dickson, with Smeed turning the screw in the following over by taking three more boundaries off Fortuin. That meant Somerset finished the 15th over on 136 for 3 – exactly the same score as Hampshire as the same stage of their innings.Sean Dickson played a key hand for Somerset•Getty Images

Finisher Dickson does it again

With 59 needed from 30 balls, Dickson produced his first flourish by ramping Baker over the keeper for his first boundary. Another driven four followed, and Smeed then crunched Currie into the Hollies to keep Somerset in touch. With dew becoming a factor, the 18th over was to prove decisive as Dickson – who is leaving Somerset for Glamorgan after not being offered a new contract – twice took Benny Howell for sixes, the first an outrageous reverse-swipe that sailed over deep third.Nineteen runs came off the over, leaving Somerset needing 18 from 12, and although Smeed picked out long-off to fall short of becoming the second man on the day to reach three figures, he walked off with the highest individual score in a final. The jig was up for Hampshire, and in came Gregory to ice the chase with a flurry of boundaries and spark a raucous rendition of “Somerset, la-la-la” in the stands.

No Lynn-sanity this time

After his semi-final heroics, in which he became the first man to score a hundred on Finals Day, Lynn joked that he would be happy to keep batting, with just a 45-minute turnaround to the final: “Got the pads on, let’s go.” He got his wish, with Somerset opting to chase, and duly smoked his fourth ball back down the ground for his 12th six of the day; but he didn’t last much longer, chipping Craig Overton to cover in the third over. But where Lynn’s top-order colleagues had gone missing against Northants, here they stood up. Albert had got going with back-to-back drives for four, in the process overtaking D’Arcy Short at the Blast’s leading run-scorer for the season. After Vince chimed in with whipped sixes off Overton and Jake Ball, Albert signalled the Hampshire charge was well and truly on by taking Migael Pretorius’ only over of the night for 25 with a sequence of 4-6-6-4-4, only interrupted by a wide.Vince then launched Overton for his third six at the start of the sixth over, followed by consecutive fours – which meant eight legitimate deliveries in a row had disappeared to the rope. Even without the Lynn-sanity, Hampshire had piled up 83 for 1 at the end of the powerplay.

Albert takes over

With the fielding restrictions relaxed, Hampshire opted for consolidation during the middle of the innings. Albert was the first to fifty, off 29 balls – his sixth of a breakthrough campaign – while Vince also reached the mark in the 12th over, from 32. Three balls later, the partnership was broken when Vince dragged Lewis Goldsworthy to deep midwicket, and Somerset then chipped out another when Ball’s brilliant return catch saw off James Fuller.Hampshire had only scored three boundaries between the start of the seventh over and the midway point of the 16th. Despite the slowdown, Albert decided it was time to jam the gearstick in reverse. Ben Green was twice reverse-swept off the stumps, despite bowling near-yorkers, over and past short third for back-to-back fours, and Albert then did the same to Ball when he went short, slapping another brace of boundaries to move into the 80s.Albert fell at the start of the next over, missing a swipe at Gregory’s change-up to see his off stump rattled. But Howell cleared the ropes twice in a useful cameo at No. 5, as Hampshire equalled Northamptonshire’s total of 194 for 2 (made from 18 overs) in the 2013 final. Somerset needed to set a new benchmark to claim their record-equalling third title. They duly obliged.

Juventus are watching Enzo Maresca! Chelsea boss lined up as future replacement for under fire Igor Tudor

Juventus have reportedly identified Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca as a potential future manager amid growing scrutiny on Igor Tudor. While the Bianconeri remain unbeaten in Serie A, frustration is mounting over their series of draws and lack of progress. Maresca, who has impressed in England, is seen as an ideal long-term fit for the Turin giants.

  • Juventus eye Maresca as pressure mounts on Tudor

The Bianconeri are currently unbeaten in Serie A but have been frustrated by a run of draws that has stalled their early-season momentum. With the team struggling to find consistency and attacking rhythm, club officials are said to be keeping a close eye on alternative options should performances not improve, according to journalist Matteo Moretto.

Turin impressed by Maresca’s Chelsea rise

Maresca has emerged as a serious long-term target for Juve due to his growing reputation in England. The Italian tactician, a former Juventus midfielder, took charge of Chelsea in 2024 and led the club to the UEFA Conference League title and the Club World Cup in 2025.

“There’s a club in Italy that’s closely following Enzo Maresca’s matches and appreciates his qualities as a coach,” Moretto revealed, speaking on Fabrizio Romano's YouTube channel. “There are no talks or negotiations at the moment, it’s more of a long-term idea. Enzo used to play for this club, it’s Juventus.”

Juve admire Maresca’s managerial style and tactical clarity, particularly his ability to rebuild a struggling Chelsea side into a Champions League contender. His understanding of the Juventus environment, having been a player in Turin, makes him an appealing choice for the club’s hierarchy.

  • Tudor fighting to prove himself amid criticism while Maresca happy at Chelsea

Despite the rumours, Juventus have maintained public backing for Tudor. The Croatian coach still enjoys respect within the club, but reports from Italy suggest his future depends heavily on upcoming results. With five consecutive draws and growing tactical criticism, he faces mounting pressure to deliver a statement win.

Tudor’s insistence on sticking to his three-man defensive system has raised questions, particularly after goalless draws against AC Milan and Bologna. The manager’s approach has been quite stubborn with pundits urging tactical flexibility.

And, while Juventus’ admiration is genuine, there are no concrete discussions underway as Maresca remains firmly committed to Chelsea, where he has a contract running until June 2029. Both sides reportedly share a strong relationship built on “synergy and harmony.” At present, Maresca’s focus is on consolidating Chelsea’s progress in the Premier League and Europe.

Juventus’ next test and what’s next for Tudor

Juve’s immediate priority remains their upcoming Serie A fixture against Cesc Fabregas’ Como, which will serve as another crucial test for Tudor’s position. The Old Lady are expected to evaluate his performances closely during this phase before making any decisions on long-term changes.

For now, Juventus continue to oversee Maresca, seeing him as a future option rather than an imminent replacement. But if results fail to improve, the Chelsea manager’s name could quickly move from a long-term consideration to a realistic target for 2026.

Jofra Archer: 'I know my body can hold up to red-ball cricket'

Fast bowler confident he’s ready for Test comeback after coming through Sussex return unscathed

Jofra Archer says that the mental challenge of returning to four-day cricket after a four-year absence has been a bigger issue than the physical toil. However, he is confident that his body will be ready for Test cricket if he gets the call-up later this summer.Speaking to Sussex Cricket at Chester-le-Street after the second day’s play, where he had dismissed Emilio Gay lbw for his first first-class wicket for 1,501 days, Archer admitted the experience had been “mentally tough” on a surface that offered very little lateral movement for the bowlers.”I’m glad to just finish a day of four-day cricket,” he said. “Last time I played [against Kent at Hove in May 2021], I just made it to tea, so I’m glad to go all the way today.”When the scoreboard got to 50 overs, I was, like, ‘Jesus, time to come off now!'” he joked. “But it wasn’t too bad. Doing it session-by-session was okay, but the pitch didn’t do much.”Today could have been the longest day I’ve ever had, and not because it’s red-ball cricket,” he added. “I’ve been in the field for two-and-a-half days before, and it still didn’t feel as long as today. When the ball is moving, and you’re getting something off the pitch, it feels a bit more exciting.”However, crucially for Archer’s hopes of getting back into the Test team – for whom he last featured on the tour of India in 2020-21 – his body has so far shown no reaction to the added toil of red-ball cricket.”It felt all right today,” he said. “I’ve been playing for a year, and bowling for two years, including the build-up, so everything is fine.”There have been no restrictions on this game,” he added, when asked if the ECB had requested that he limit his workload. “Whatever I did, I did. Obviously there can’t be a limit if you’re looking at a Test match. They were in the field for a day-and-a-half [in the first Test at Headingley].Related

“You can’t have restrictions if you’re potentially going to go in. You put your body through as much pressure, safely, as possible, to put yourself in the best position.”Archer’s return to action this summer was delayed by an injured right thumb that he sustained during the IPL. However, he classified that setback alongside the freak glass cut he received from a broken fishtank back in 2021, calling it more of an “accident than an injury” compared to the career-threatening elbow and back fractures that have chequered his recent career.”If you get cut in the kitchen with a knife, no-one’s going to call it an injury,” he said. “It’s similar with my thumb. I just got hit while batting as we do all the time, but unfortunately it got fractured. If it was my left thumb I could have carried on and no-one would know but, because it was my bowling hand, I had to give it a bit of care.”But injuries are injuries. Nobody gets injured on purpose, no one knows when they will happen … it can be in the gym, or rehab, pre-hab, or whatever. If you’re supposed to get injured, there’s nothing you can do to get away from it.”Asked if he could ever have envisaged a return to first-class cricket during his long lay-off, Archer replied: “Back then, I didn’t have the choice because I didn’t think my body could hold up to it.”Now it’s a different challenge, because I know my body can hold up to it. The mental part of the game [will be tough]. Over the next couple of days, I’m going to have to battle a bit with it, but it’s all good. It’s a new challenge, and I’ll keep trucking along.”

    Matthaus hails Uzun’s maturity

The former German international, speaking on , lauded Uzun’s development and on-field intelligence.

"The ball loves him because he consistently makes the right decisions. He needed a bit of time and hired a private coach in the summer, and now he's someone who has the entire game under control," he said. "He's in high demand at 19 and has the confidence to do anything, and that shows when you're confident and have the coach's trust. What he played yesterday in the first half was absolutely world class."

  • Uzun’s journey and rising stats

Uzun joined Frankfurt from Nurnberg in the summer of 2024 for €11 million (£10m/$12m), with add-ons of €3m, signing a contract until 2029. Initially adjusting to Bundesliga demands, he made 31 appearances in his debut season, scoring five goals and providing three assists, numbers he has already matched this campaign. Frankfurt plans to retain him until at least 2027 as top European clubs monitor his meteoric rise, reflecting the club’s strategy to nurture their young attacking talent.

In a post-match interview, when Uzun was asked about his recent form, he said: "Of course, it wasn't obvious that things would turn out this way and I'd score so many times in succession. It was a nice goal by me after a great assist from Fares [Chaibi]. The first half was a lot of fun. We hardly gave them anything before the break, I'm happy about the win. I have full confidence in our defense. We scored six goals, which is amazing. Atlético will be awesome opponents. Hopefully I'll also score against Bayern."

Alongside Savinho: £60m Gibbs-White upgrade now keen to join Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur will desperately want to make amends in the Premier League this season, after falling way below the high expectations they’ve set for themselves in recent times.

The Lilywhites ended the 2024/25 campaign in a measly 17th place, sitting just one place above the relegation zone – which ultimately cost Ange Postecoglou his job.

Such a departure has allowed Thomas Frank to take the reins in North London, taking the next step in his managerial career, after spending seven years in charge at Brentford.

The Dane has already added Mohammed Kudus and Joao Palhinha to his ranks, but it’s likely that added reinforcements will be targeted before the September 1st deadline.

As a result of his ambitions in the market, numerous players have emerged on their radar in recent days, with the hope that they can join the club with just a couple of weeks left in the window.

The latest on Spurs’ hunt for new additions this summer

Manchester City star Savinho has become a surprise target for Spurs in recent days, potentially leaving his current side after just one season at the Etihad Stadium.

It’s been reported that the 21-year-old would be open to a move to join the Lilywhites this summer, with Pep Guardiola’s side currently demanding around £60m for his signature.

However, the attacker isn’t the only Premier League talent currently in their sights this window, with Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze also being considered, according to GIVEMESPORT.

The report claims that talks have already been held between the player and Frank’s side, with Arsenal also firmly in the race for the 27-year-old’s signature this summer.

It also states that the manager is a huge fan of the player who’s also keen on a move to join the Lilywhites, with the Englishman having a £60m release clause within his current contract at Selhurst Park.

Why Spurs’ £60m target is better than Gibbs-White

Spurs’ hunt for new additions in the attacking department could’ve easily been solved by now, had they completed a deal for Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White.

Nottingham Forest's MorganGibbs-Whitecelebrates

The hierarchy decided to trigger his £60m release clause in his deal at the City Ground, with the 25-year-old even set for a medical earlier in the summer window.

However, whilst a move seemed a formality at one stage, Reds’ owner Evangelos Marinakis intervened in such a deal, voicing his displeasure over an alleged illegal approach for his signature.

Such a move was put on hold, which cast doubt over a deal to sign Gibbs-White, leading to the England international penning a new three-year deal with Nuno Espírito Santo’s side.

As a result, other options have had to be considered in North London, leading to their potential move to sign fellow Englishman Eze in the coming weeks.

Crystal Palace's EberechiEzereacts

When comparing his stats to those of Gibbs-White from the most recent campaign, the FA Cup winner managed to outperform him in multiple areas, offering a better option for Frank’s side ahead of 2025/26.

Eze, who’s been labelled “sensational” by talkSPORT’s Rory Jennings, posted more goals and assists along with more shot-creating actions per 90, possessing more of a threat when in front of goal.

He also completed more key passes and more passes into the final third per 90, able to provide more chances to other attackers around him in North London.

The Palace star’s dominance over Gibbs-White is further highlighted in his take-on success rate and progressive carries completed per 90, having the tools to take the ball into dangerous areas on a more consistent basis.

Missing out on the Forest star will undoubtedly be a huge disappointment for the Lilywhites fanbase, but the hierarchy can’t rest on their laurels for the remainder of the window.

A deal for Eze would be an excellent piece of business, undoubtedly handing the side a better option in attacking areas, allowing the club to have the best chance of success in 2025/26.

Chelsea in talks to sell £52m star; his exit would make space for Simons

Next season feels like it’s going to be a massive one for Chelsea.

Enzo Maresca’s side are coming off a brilliant campaign in which they secured Champions League football, won the Conference League and even beat Paris Saint-Germain in the final of the Club World Cup.

Add to that the brilliant work the club have been doing in the transfer market by signing players like Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens, and it’s hard not to see them taking another step forward.

Moreover, the West Londoners appear to be looking to do even more in the market, with links to Xavi Simons heating up in recent days.

However, to bring him in, they may need to offload another attacker first, or simultaneously.

Why Chelsea would want to sign Simons

Chelsea have been linked with Simons for what feels like a couple of weeks now, but it’s been in the last few days that things have started to heat up, with some reports claiming personal terms have already been agreed, and that RB Leipzig are holding out for a fee of around £61m.

Now, that is most certainly a lot of money, but with how well the Dutchman has played in recent seasons, and the potential so many believe him to possess, that could be a fee that looks like fair value a few years from now.

For example, in just 33 games last season, totalling just 2763 minutes, the 22-year-old “game-changer,” as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, scored 11 goals and provided eight assists.

That means the 22-year-old phenom managed to average a goal involvement every 1.73 games, or every 144 minutes, which is made all the more impressive by the fact that Leipzig struggled massively and ended up finishing in seventh place, outside all European places.

Another reason the Blues should be looking to sign the former Paris Saint-Germain prospect is his positional versatility.

For example, while one analyst recently described him as “one of the best 10s in the world,” the Amsterdam-born dynamo is more than capable of playing on either flank, and has even made several appearances up top.

In all, Simons is worth splashing the cash on, but to make room for him in the squad and to help with the financial side of things, Chelsea might need to move someone on first, and it looks like they may well do so.

The star Chelsea could move on

Chelsea have already made several sales this summer, with Noni Madueke and Kepa Arrizabalaga making the increasingly common move to Arsenal, and most recently, João Félix moving to Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

However, it now looks like they could be making even more room for new attacking signings by potentially moving on Christopher Nkunku.

At least that is according to a recent report from Sports Zone, which has revealed that during talks about Simons, Leipzig have expressed “genuine interest” in re-signing the French forward.

The 27-year-old moved to Stamford Bridge for £52m in the summer of 2023, and it’s not entirely clear whether he’d go back to Germany for a fee or as part of a swap deal, but this feels like an exit the Blues should facilitate.

It’s not that the previously “unstoppable” attacker, as journalist Zach Lowy described him during his time with Leipzig, has been terrible for the West Londoners, but he has been undeniably underwhelming.

Yet, while his tally of 18 goals and five assists in 62 appearances isn’t dreadful, it’s important to note the competitions in which the vast majority of those goal involvements came.

For example, of his 18 goals, five came in the Conference League, two in the qualifiers and three in the League Cup – in other words, he’s been a second-string player at best.

What makes that somewhat of a problem is the fact he’s not earning the wage of a second-string player; instead, he’s taking home a hefty £195k-per-week, which made him the fourth-highest earner last season.

Ultimately, if Chelsea can move on Nkunku this summer and get his wages off the books, that would be great, and it’d be even better if his exit helped facilitate a move for Simons.

Everton and Moyes now open talks for Yamal-esque forward instead of Dibling

da 888: Everton are on the hunt for reinforcements for their forward line as David Moyes looks to build on the momentum he built when re-joining the team last year.

da poker: The Toffees had been pushing to sign Southampton’s young star boy, Tyler Dibling, but negotiations between the two sides seem to have collapsed. Dibling was one of the only bright sparks at Southampton last season as they were relegated, having only accrued 12 points.

When the transfer window opened, clubs like Manchester United were interested in Dibbling, and so the Saints wanted an astronomical £100 million for the winger, but their price demand has dropped since then. Everton had reportedly put in a number of bids for the youngster, with the first starting at £27 million and their final bid being £35 million plus a further £8 million in potential add-ons.

Southampton sent a counter offer of £45 million plus £5 million in add-ons and a 25% sell-on clause. This was evidently more than Everton are willing to spend, and so they have now set their sights elsewhere.

Everton turn their attention to Grealish as loan talks begin

Following their impasse with Southampton over Dibling, Everton have turned their attention to Jack Grealish. It’s become clear that a move away from the Etihad may be on the cards for Grealish following decreasing game time at Manchester City last season, and David Ornstein reports the clubs are now in talks over a “complicated” loan deal.

The England international joined Manchester City from Aston Villa for £100 million in 2021, but he never lived up to the expectations that came with his Villa success or his price tag.

As recently as last season, he was being touted as a “generational talent” by City legends like Shay Given, while his creative flair and ball control has led to comparisons with superstars like Ousmane Dembele and Lamine Yamal.

The main issue in terms of finances is Grealish’s wages; Everton’s current highest-paid player is Jordan Pickford, who, on £125,000-a-week, makes less than half of Grealish’s wages of £300,000-a-week.

Grealish vs Dibling

Everton walking away from the Dibling deal may make Southampton consider lowering their asking price, in which case Moyes may have the ability to pick which player he’d rather sign, Dibling or Grealish.

In terms of goal involvements, both players had very similar seasons, but nothing close to the level of output Everton fans might expect from two players who’d both previously been valued at £100 million.

Although Grealish leads Dibling for goal involvements, he arguably had the easier of the two jobs as he was featuring for a City side that had just won four back-to-back Premier League titles where whereas Dibling was playing for the second-worst team in Premier League history.

The biggest difference between the two is their career trajectories. Dibling is a youngster who shows a lot of promise but is as yet unproven, whereas Grealish has proven that he can do it at the highest level, but it is whether or not he can return to that level of form.

Hunt five-for, Haines hundred lead pursuit of rare Sussex top-flight win

Somerset indebted to Rew for slim resistance as tough fourth-innings challenge beckons

You have to go back to September 2015 for the last time Sussex won a game in Division One of the County Championship – or May of the same summer for victory at Hove. And while it would be premature to say that decade-long wait is about to come to an end, they could hardly want for a more advantageous position after two days of this encounter with Somerset.Only two members of the 2015 squad are still involved at Sussex: Ollie Robinson, currently with a foot injury, and Fynn Hudson-Prentice, in his second spell at the club after being released (Tymal Mills, now in his benefit year, is another survivor but no longer involved in red-ball). As many as four are still playing for other counties – bonus point if you can name them* – which tells you something about Sussex’s tribulations in the intervening period.Under Paul Farbrace, they have finally hit upon the right blend of youth and experience. On the back of winning the Division Two title, Farbrace eschewed talk of survival and declared that Sussex were aiming for top four as a minimum. After acquitting themselves well in their opening-round trip to Edgbaston, they have lived up to such ambitions by dictating terms against Somerset.A handy 93-run lead on first innings was secured in large part thanks to the efforts of Sean Hunt, a strapping 23-year-old left-armer, in the side for Robinson, who claimed his maiden five-wicket haul. That provided the stage for Tom Haines, Sussex’s homegrown England Lions opener, to record his 13th career hundred – and his first in the Championship’s top tier.Haines was briefly catapulted into the captaincy during the upheaval that accompanied the departure of Ben Brown (you can have that one) in 2021, a season in which he scored 1000 first-class runs, but under Farbrace has been allowed to concentrate on his own game. This was a chanceless innings as he and Daniel Hughes put on a breezy opening partnership of 184 – his third century stand with Hughes since the Australian signed last year – to leave Somerset looking for snookers in their bid to avoid defeat.Haines went to three figures with his 12th four, to go with a brace of sixes, as he skipped out to smite Jack Leach’s left-arm spin through long-on. He and Sussex’s other Horsham Tom, No. 3 Clark, added an unbroken fifty stand to stretch the lead towards 350 with six sessions left in the game.Having been blunted for exactly 200 overs in Worcestershire’s second innings during their draw at Taunton, Somerset looked more than a little listless here, with the honourable exception of James Rew, whose busy, unbeaten 80 from 83 balls prevented the day from being a complete rout. Leach was the one bowler to enjoy success, Hughes edging an attempted cut behind as a century beckoned; their only consolation may be an easing pitch, lacking the moisture of day one, which could push Sussex towards a more cautious declaration. After Hudson-Prentice had provided the spark in a raucous conclusion to the first day, Sussex drove home the advantage during Saturday’s morning session – that despite a partnership of 110 for the eighth wicket between Rew and Lewis Gregory, which staved off the threat, however unlikely, of Somerset being made to follow on.Hunt sharpened their concern with two early wickets. Tom Lammonby was defeated by extra bounce and seam movement as he inside-edged through to the diving John Simpson, Sussex’s keeper-captain then clinging on at the second attempt to remove Kasey Aldridge as Hunt jagged one across the right-hander from over the wicket. That left Somerset in sickly mood at 79 for 7, with 21-year-old Rew shouldering much of the burden during a doughty, unbeaten knock.Rew was the support act last week, his 152 against Worcestershire outshone by Tom Banton’s triple-hundred. He looked in dapper form, pulling and driving with assurance as he glided along at close to a run a ball, his one moment of genuine concern coming when a half-formed jab at Jayden Seales flew over the slip cordon for a boundary that brought up the century stand. It took Hunt just four balls to separate the pair on his return to the attack, though Gregory will not reflect on the shot with any satisfaction as he chipped tamely to mid-on. At 6ft 5in and with the ability to swing the ball from a high action, it is not hard to see why Sussex signed Hunt out of Surrey’s academy in 2021, though it has taken him time to hone those raw attributes. Leaner and meaner – and not just because of the rogue moustache that is currently popular in the Sussex dressing-room – he wasted no time in docking the Somerset tail, Simpson taking his tally of catches in the innings to five.* Ben Brown, Luke Wells, Chris Jordan, Harry Finch
