N Srinivasan has been free to stay on as BCCI president because politicians in the organisation kept silent

ESPNcricinfo staff29-May-2013N Srinivasan’s future as BCCI president is now in the hands of a group of senior politicians who are part of the BCCI, some of them holding positions on the board. These politicians, cutting across party lines, had maintained a studied silence through the spot-fixing and betting scandal and even after Srinivasan asserted his decision to stay on in charge following the arrest of his son-in-law and top Chennai Super Kings official Gurunath Meiyappan. That sparked outrage among the public, and especially in the media, that these politiians had failed to apply the standards of probity and transparency to Srinivasan that they demand in the political sphere. On Wednesday, it seemed that the wheels had started moving – prompted, most likely, with an eye on the general elections due in 2014 – and politicians began speaking out. 'Not the impossible job!' – Ruben Amorim insists he believes in Man Utd players but sets out two key areas where they must improve

Ruben Amorim has rejected suggestions he faces an impossible task at Manchester United but has identified two areas where the team must improve.

Amorim is the sixth permanent manager to take charge of the Red Devils since Sir Alex Ferguson retired. Many of his predecessors such as Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Erik ten Hag had enjoyed great success elsewhere prior to moving to Old Trafford but all of them were dismissed before completing three years in the dugout.

AdvertisementWHAT AMORIM SAID

"No, of course it's not [impossible]. Call me naïve but I believe I am the right guy in the right moment. I truly believe I am the right guy," Amorim told a press conference. "I really don’t know what the biggest challenge is, I will find out during these months. You have here different types of coaches, the guys that won everything like Van Gaal and Mourinho, the new ones that knew the club inside out like [Ole Gunnar] Solskjaer then one of the best outside the top five leagues in Ten hag. We have to improve as a club and acknowledged we have to win games. You have different coaches, the same results. We will try to do the INEOS way, my way."

Getty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Ten Hag was sacked after United lost four of their nine opening Premier League games and although interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy steadied the ship in his four games in charge, the performances underlined the fact that Amorim still faces a huge task in getting the team firing again. He insisted, however, that he believes in his new squad.

"I am a little bit a dreamer and I believe in myself and I believe in the club, I think we have the same idea, the same mindset and that can help," he said. "I truly believe in the players also. I think we have room to improve and I want to try new things. You guys think it is not possible, I think it is possible."

DID YOU KNOW?

Despite his positive message, Amorim admitted there were two areas where the team must improve: fitness and running back to defend.

He said: "I think we have to improve the physical aspect of the team. I think we lose the ball too often, we have to be better at running back, I think that is clear to everyone and I think we have to be better on the details. We have to improve on the small things. In the small things, I think I can help a lot."

Mary Earps vs Hannah Hampton: England need long-time No.1 to thrive at PSG amid competition from Chelsea star for Lionesses starting berth at Euro 2025

The reigning European champions are only nine months away from their title defence and Sarina Wiegman needs competition in all places in preparation

It’s fair to say that Mary Earps’ start to life at Paris Saint-Germain did not go to plan. Elimination in Champions League qualifying was followed up by her taking a spot on the bench for the team’s first home game of the league season, prompting early questions about her decision to join the French side while casting doubt over her ability to battle Hannah Hampton for the No.1 spot with England, ahead of next summer’s European Championships.

Fortunately, things have improved in the last couple of weeks. After keeping her first clean sheet for her new club in a 1-0 win over Nantes, a flying save in the 2-1 victory against Fleury garnered plenty of positive attention on social media on Sunday. It feels like Earps is starting to make her mark in Paris now.

That’s good news for the goalkeeper, it’s good news for PSG and it’s good news for England. Whether she earns the starting gig at Euro 2025 or not, the Lionesses need Earps to be in top form as they prepare to defend their continental crown.

  • Getty

    Vital player

Twelve months ago, England’s goalkeeping department wasn’t in the shape head coach Sarina Wiegman would’ve hoped. In stark contrast to the feelings around her start at PSG, it was Earps who was the saving grace this time last year, as the only shot-stopper in the Lionesses’ picture who was playing regularly.

Thankfully, she was also in fantastic form, papering over the cracks that had formed lower down the pecking order. Hampton was yet to play a game for new club Chelsea, Ellie Roebuck wasn’t making matchday squads for Manchester City, Khiara Keating – Roebuck’s usurper – was an uncapped teenager and Sandy MacIver had switched allegiances to represent Scotland.

As England’s (eventually unsuccessful) bid to qualify for the Nations League finals and the Olympic Games intensified, it was vital that Earps was getting game time. She was more important to her national team than ever before.

    Difference a year makes

While Roebuck – now at Barcelona – is still to return to action as she recovers from suffering a type of stroke and MacIver remains a Scotland player, a lot of other details have changed in the past year. Keating is now struggling for game time, with summer signing Ayaka Yamashita emerging as Man City’s No.1. It means Wiegman has started to look at other goalkeepers, calling up Orlando Pride star Anna Moorhouse in recent months. The 29-year-old has been in superb form for the NWSL Shield winners, but remains uncapped.

Most significantly, Hampton has now become Chelsea’s first-choice shot-stopper, allowing her to firmly stake a claim to hold the same status with England. Since her game time has increased with the Blues, her standing in Wiegman’s squad has also grown to the point that, in the view of many, she is in pole position to be the Lionesses’ No.1.

  • Getty Images

    Battling to be No.1

But as England start to really focus on next summer’s Euros, at which they will be the defending champions, it’s important that Hampton does not simply inherit a starting role by default. She is still just 23 years old, only made her Champions League debut this year and is yet to play a game at a major international tournament.

That’s not to say that any of those facts should be reasons for her not to be England’s starting goalkeeper. Hampton is a remarkable talent, one capable of becoming the best in the world in her position if former coach Emma Hayes’ opinion is anything to go by, and she has been excellent for club and country through 2024.

However, it does feel important for the Lionesses that she earns that berth rather than being given it because she is the only option Wiegman has that is playing regular minutes. Considering the depth of talent at England’s disposal, it would be a terrible scenario if the European champions didn’t have genuine competition for that No.1 spot and players pushing each other to be their best ahead of such an important tournament.

  • Getty Images

    Healthy competition

There will be plenty Hampton is learning as she battles with Earps for that starting role, too. The 31-year-old has played for some huge clubs, starred at two major international tournaments and knows all about the weight of expectation that comes from having such a prominent position in the Lionesses’ team. Earps is also a fantastic professional and someone who will push her younger team-mate every day in training.

To see that battle intensifying will certainly please Wiegman, especially given Earps was her only option in between the sticks last year when it came to goalkeepers playing regularly. It’s not just about competition, either. If something was to happen to either shot-stopper, it’s good for the coach to know that she has a replacement lined up who is match fit, in form and has plenty of experience.

Arsenal plot move for £20m Barcelona target who used to play with Odegaard

Arsenal are plotting a move for one £20 million player wanted by Barcelona, and he interestingly used to play with star midfielder Martin Odegaard at a former club.

The four key signings which Arsenal want to make this summer

This year's summer transfer window is set to close in around six weeks on August 30, with sporting director Edu and manager Mikel Arteta reportedly looking to bolster Arsenal's squad in four key areas.

£52 million forward could be offered to Arsenal as agents hold talks

He’s reached out for talks with the Gunners.

ByEmilio Galantini Jul 13, 2024

Indeed, it is believed Arsenal are looking at signing a new goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and forward in these coming weeks, but they need to get moving if that is their ultimate goal.

So far, the Gunners have only confirmed the signing of David Raya in a £27 million permanent deal from Brentford, which was seen as a formality. It isn't for lack of trying from Arsenal's perspective, as they remain in talks to sign Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna to shore up their backline.

The negotiations for Italy's Euro 2024 star man have been ongoing for nearly two weeks, with Fabrizio Romano sharing the news Arsenal have opened discussions with Bologna over Calafiori around 12 days ago.

Calafiori is keen on a move to Arsenal after agreeing personal terms on a five-year contract, and it is believed that remains the case as Edu's recruitment team attempt to strike an understanding with Bologna on the fee and payment structure.

If things go to plan, the 22-year-old will be Arsenal's defensive signing of the summer window, but the chase to bring in a new midfielder is ongoing as well. Thomas Partey is out of contract in 11 months and played just 14 Premier League games last season, resulting in the Ghanaian being heavily linked with a move away.

The 31-year-old is attracting interest from the Middle East and Turkey, as Saudi Pro League sides consider an attempt to sign Partey with a lucrative contract offer. It is also claimed that Partey is ready for a fresh challenge away from Arsenal himself, so Arteta will need a replacement if he does leave.

Many interesting midfielders have been linked, but a name who has repeatedly been mentioned is Spain star Mikel Merino. The former Newcastle United midfielder was a hero for Spain on their route to Euro 2024 glory, scoring the winner against hosts Germany in their quarter-final tie, and he could be available for a good price this summer.

Arsenal plotting move for Mikel Merino after £20 million claim

The Telegraph and reliable journalist Sam Dean now back Arsenal's interest in the 28-year-old, with reports in Spain claiming he'll cost around £20 million given the player's contract expires next year.

Dean writes that Arsenal are plotting a move to sign Merino, but could face competition from the likes of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. The Spaniard is actually a former teammate of Odegaard's as well, with the pair playing together at Sociedad in the 2019/2020 season when he was on loan from Real Madrid.

Merino made 45 appearances in all competitions for Sociedad last season, scoring eight goals and assisting five others, so £20m seems like a price worth considering on the surface.

Chelsea expect "complete" £20m star to travel for medical in coming weeks

The Blues are set to get their man.

ByTom Cunningham Jul 1, 2024

Euro 2024 has seemingly stalled a few other clubs, who are waiting longer to conduct their business, but the tournament hasn't stopped Chelsea's recruitment team from kickstarting their summer early doors.

Chelsea hijacked Brighton's deal for Leicester City star Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall most recently, despite the Seagulls scheduling a medical for the Englishman and Jakub Moder looking set to move the other way.

The Blues made an inquiry over Dewsbury-Hall, amid Brighton's attempts to get him over the line, and that was seemingly enough for Enzo Maresca to be reunited with his star Leicester midfielder at Stamford Bridge.

Negotiations accelerated over the weekend, with Chelsea eventually sealing a £30 million deal for the midfielder who bagged 12 goals and 15 assists under Maresca at the King Power Stadium last season (Fabrizio Romano).

In recent days, Chelsea also confirmed the signings of young striker Marc Guiu in a £5 million deal from Barcelona, who penned a five-year contract, and highly-rated teenage midfielder Omari Kellyman in a £19 million move from Aston Villa.

However, Chelsea are by no means finished after this flurry of agreements. Co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, who are leading Chelsea's transfer charge, are rumoured to be targeting new star first-team attackers.

Guiu and Kellyman may be seen as ones for the future, with Chelsea prepared to bid for Napoli star Victor Osimhen, among others, as they seek upgrades for Maresca.

Chelsea hold talks with Newcastle owners over Anthony Gordon

They've been heavily linked with Isak recently as well, but his rumoured price tag of around £150 million may be too much for Boehly and co as they seek to abide by PSR regulations.

That isn't to say they couldn't raid Newcastle for another star, though, as England winger Anthony Gordon turns heads at Cobham. The 23-year-old was handed a place in the Three Lions squad for Euro 2024 by Gareth Southgate, coming after an electric campaign on Tyneside where he racked up 12 goals and 11 assists in all competitions.

Journalist Simon Phillips, writing on his Substack, claims Chelsea have recently held talks with Newcastle owners over signing Gordon. Some reports claim they value him at no less than £50 million, but this may be optimistic from Chelsea's point of view.

It remains to be seen whether Eddie Howe's side are open to selling at all following the PSR deadline on June 30, but interestingly, pundits like Frank McAvennie have said Gordon, on £60,000-a-week, "could become a star like Isak".

Rangers very likely to sign "terrific" player for free; talks already held

After already sealing deals for Jefte and Oscar Cortes this summer, Rangers have reportedly turned their attention to landing Phillippe Clement's third arrival of the transfer window.

Rangers transfer news

The Gers recently confirmed the arrival of Cortes on another year-long loan deal with an obligation to buy from Lens. The winger initially enjoyed a solid start to life at Ibrox in his first spell, before injury ended things before he had the chance to really find his feet in Scotland. There were seemingly enough positive signs before that knock, however, with Clement welcoming him back for another campaign.

Speaking to the official Rangers website, Cortes expressed his delight over the move, saying: “I am delighted to be able to stay at Rangers.

"It was an honour and privilege for me to join the club in January and I was enjoying my football under the manager and playing alongside my team-mates. Sadly, the injury ended my season early, but I have been working hard and I am excited to help the team and play in front of the wonderful fans again soon.”

Now, however, the Gers have turned their attention towards a third arrival. According to The Scotsman, Rangers are now very likely to sign Liam Kelly on a free deal upon the expiry of his Motherwell contract. With talks already held, Clement looks set to receive an instant replacement for Jon McLaughlin, who left Ibrox as a free agent at the end of the season.

The move will be a full circle moment for Kelly, who left Rangers in 2018 and now seems on course to finally make his return as many as six years later.

"Terrific" Kelly can take McLaughlin role

Whilst Jack Butland remains Clement's clear number one at Rangers, Kelly can arrive to take McLaughlin's number two role to provide sufficient backup for the former Stoke City goalkeeper throughout what is always an action-packed campaign. At 28 years old and with experience in the Championship as well as plenty in Scotland, Kelly certainly represents a reliable second choice too, especially given the praise of Motherwell boss Stuart Kettlewell.

Liam Kelly

Kettlewell said via BBC Sport: "I can assure you there's no-one who dissects anything more than Liam. If he feels he's culpable for a goal or a situation in a game, he's the first person to hold his hand up. He's not scared to take blame for anything and I really enjoy his integrity. He's a terrific influence on everyone else around him."

With Jefte, Cortes and now reportedly likely Kelly through the door already this summer, Rangers' summer overhaul is certainly going to plan, making the departures of the likes of McLaughlin, Borna Barisic and Kemar Roofe seem like yesterday's news. With Clement making his mark, the Gers could make more additions over the coming months.

Pope's truth: Captaincy may be an honour, but batting remains the future

In a career that has seemed to be in a constant state of flux, he will be desperate to get this move right

Vithushan Ehantharajah28-Aug-2024The circumstances around Ollie Pope’s temporary Test captaincy are peculiar enough with Ben Stokes sitting stage-side like a proud mum at the school play encouraging you to smile more. But as England’s stand-in primes himself for the honour of leading the team out at Lord’s on Thursday, he does so with the focus squarely on him as a player rather than a defacto leader.Victory in the first Test at Manchester was, by and large, routine. Sri Lanka’s resistance amounted to quelling England rather than countering them. Pope captained well, particularly when shorn of Mark Wood for the business end of Sri Lanka’s second innings, albeit with assistance from a ball-change 41 overs in. But his sole takeaway was a need to strike a balance between skippering and batting.Scores of 6 in both innings were far from ideal. And the nature of the dismissals – bowled stuck on the crease; scuffing a reverse sweep to first slip – would have been fertile ground for riffing on a No.3 preoccupied with digesting his on-field captaincy had Pope not sowed the seeds of that take and then harvested them himself.Related

“Probably one of the things I can improve on this week and the next is making sure you don’t do that,” Pope said. “You walk off the pitch and, when you’re batting three, you get your pads straight on and you know you could be in whenever. That’s probably the main thing – not thinking about all the decisions you just make on the pitch. Just thinking ‘right, now it’s time to bat’.”Batters are creatures of habit, but Pope’s habits at first-drop have only been grooved over the last couple of years. He has always tried to maintain a chilled disposition while waiting his turn, keeping one eye on the television to spot the amount of seam and swing on offer, occasionally venturing onto the balcony for a sit-down. He has always enjoyed a wander around the dressing room, nattering to team-mates without imposing himself on other people’s routines, which is a rare skill itself.Harry Brook practises his golf swing as Ollie Pope looks on•Getty ImagesSince June 2022 – when he first appeared at No.3 for England – those conversations have been a little shorter and with pads on. “It’s probably what I’ve learned over the last two years – save as much energy for when you’re out in the middle rather than just watching every single ball too closely.”That Joe Root is in the dressing room is of some help to Pope’s pursuit of a new equilibrium. What advice there has been thus far has centred on the need for a routine to shed how much “more taxing” fielding becomes when you’re the one setting the fields. If Root can offer anything, it is empathy, because balance was something he never truly found. He skipped between No.3 and No.4 with all the certainty of a man holding his phone out the window looking for better reception. He averaged 46.44 across 64 Tests as captain, lower than an overall career average of 50.33 and drastically below the 53.82 across the 80 Tests he has played without the armband. It’s worth noting his best run as captain came from the start of 2021, averaging 54.36 in his final 20 Tests. England lost 11 and won just four of those. It speaks volumes of Root’s candour he has not turned to Pope and shouted, “Ditch it and run!””I’ve got two more weeks of the series, it’s not like I’m saying I’m fatigued about it,” Pope said, assuring all this was very much a “him” problem rather than one for the rest of English cricket to concern themselves with. “It’s just finding a way to compartmentalise.”Not for the first time, Pope has brought honesty to the table. He was one of the first to talk of the challenges of bio-secure living during the Covid-19 summer of 2020, speaking openly about the emotional tax of being stuck in a hotel that overlooks the ground you had just toiled on earlier that day. Whether talking about the early shift to Test cricket when he debuted at Lord’s in 2018, restricted bubble life or getting to grips with a new batting position, he has always been forthcoming.Regardless of how Pope’s batting goes over the last two Tests of the summer, Stokes and Brendon McCullum will give him leeway. He has been their pet project, not just as a No.3, where he is still averaging 42.60, but as a vice-captain, a move taken to coax leadership out of him. And they are more than satisfied with how he has acquitted himself over the last two years. But Pope is desperate to get this right. It is as much about the captaincy as a career that feels in a constant state of flux. Even this year alone, a blockbuster 196 against India and a calming 121 against West Indies surround 11 scores of 23 or lower across 16 innings.Set against a rock-solid set of openers, a thriving middle order in which Harry Brook is emerging as the tallest pillar, Pope is under the most scrutiny. Should Dan Lawrence cash in his “free hit” as a makeshift opener in the absence of Zak Crawley, or Jordan Cox get the opportunity to press his claims further, there is a future where a tough decision might need to be made. This summer, Ben Foakes, Jonny Bairstow and Jack Leach were discarded from the Test side. Moeen Ali, recently Jos Buttler’s vice-captain, has been left out of the white ball sides to face Australia. Dawid Malan, once regarded as the best international T20 batter in the world, announced his retirement on Wednesday having been deemed surplus to requirements. This is a management group not afraid of grasping the nettle. All of which brings us back to that earlier quandary of balance. Pope may be one game into a three-game stint leading this team, but it probably would not hurt him to broach it more selfishly and tip the scales one way.Captaincy may be an honour. But batting needs to be his primary focus for a reliable future.

Stalemate looms at the Gabba as Bryce Street's ton continues bowlers' woes

Bryce Street gave another example of his ability to bat long periods of time with a career-best 117, his third first-class century, as the match against Western Australia at the Gabba continued to be a forgettable experience for bowlers.Street’s hundred was followed by half-centuries for Matt Renshaw and Jimmy Peirson as Queensland closed in on Western Australia’s total with the match seemingly destined for a stalemate.Marnus Labuschagne had started the day in sight of a century but fell eight runs short when he got an inside edge into pad which looped to square leg.Usman Khawaja had got himself set when he tickled a catch down the leg side and Street’s 335-ball stay was ended by a spectacular catch at long leg by Liam Guthrie to haul in a top-edged hook.Renshaw and Peirson then added 103 for the fifth wicket as Queensland, who are top of the table, opted against declaring behind to try and open up the match.Jake Carder, playing his first Shield match of the season, claimed the last wicket of the day when Peirson was sharply caught at slip.

Journalist responds to "whispers" about £40m English star joining Tottenham

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank could be backed with further signings in January, coming after the Lewis family bankrolled the Lilywhites with a £100 million capital injection last week.

Lewis family make Tottenham statement with £100m windfall

This extra funding will be used for the ‘day-to-day’ running of Spurs, according to reports, with CEO Vinai Venkatesham and non-executive chairman Peter Charrington now poised to decide how this cash will be spent.

Frank and technical director Johan Lange will also have a say, according to reliable journalist Alasdair Gold, with the two Danes and Tottenham’s new-look boardroom finalising their financial requirements for on-pitch success.

This follows an intriguing claim from Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol last month, who reported all the way back then that ENIC were intending to pump money into the club, and these funds could be used on new transfers or to heighten their wage budget.

With January around the corner, there is every reason to believe that a portion of his new capital could be used to attack the transfer market, and there are a few key areas of the squad that need addressing.

It is believed that Tottenham still want a centre-back and another winger, after failing to sign Savinho and another defender in the summer window. Meanwhile, there are multiple reports now surfacing that Spurs are keen to sign a new number nine as well.

Dominic Solanke hasn’t featured since Tottenham’s 2-0 win away to Man City in August, and hasn’t played more than 20 minutes in any of his three appearances so far this term as the England international continues his comeback from minor ankle surgery.

Richarlison, meanwhile, is a cause for concern amid some criticism surrounding his lack of consistency, with Mathys Tel given the starting nod against Leeds United and opening the scoring in place of the Brazilian.

Frank has made a solid start to life in the Spurs dugout, after ex-chair Daniel Levy handed him a lucrative three-year contract which made him the Premier League’s joint-third highest paid manager, but the Dane arguably needs a reliable goalscorer up top.

Randal Kolo Muani can play as a centre-forward, but he’s only on a straight loan, which is highly uncharacteristic for Spurs, as Lange and co may well be forced to return to the market for a more long-term target.

The France international, once he’s back fully fit, could eventually prove that he’s worth negotiating for a permanent deal, but for now, Tottenham are considering their options.

Journalist responds to "whispers" about Ivan Toney joining Tottenham

Al-Ahli star Ivan Toney, who worked with Frank at Brentford and scored 20 Premier League goals in 2022/2023, has been linked with a January move to N17 recently.

Some reports claim that Frank has even contacted Toney about joining Tottenham on loan in the winter, and reporter Dean Jones has responded to “whispers” he’s heard about the £40 million forward’s potential return to England.

Since his move to Saudi in the summer of 2024, Toney has played just two minutes of action for England and was omitted from the Three Lions squad for nearly a year, before appearing on the bench against Andorra in June and featuring in a shock loss to Senegal.

The 29-year-old might have one eye on a place in Tuchel’s 2026 World Cup side, but despite scoring for fun in the Middle East, he isn’t getting much of a look-in bar that one summer call.

Taking this into account, the prospect of a return to England could tempt him, but Toney would also have to give up a seismic £426,000-per-week pay packet to come home.
